@@slimchancetoo . Actually , they DO have Torque . But they are NOT Luggers . Keep the Revs way up . Also , only a 12 litre Engine , not 14 or 15 or 16 litre . That matters .
I do miss this sound. 1975 International COE Transtar 2 with the Silver 8V92. I made a lot of long nose conventionals with 400 Cats and Cummins mad at me when I'd pass them😆 with the straight pipes!
Yep -- see my comment above. Backing off was the better choice than trying to out-pull you. But without getting into an argument with you I doubt a factory spec Silver 92 (I drove several at high gross rates and sometimes multiple trailers) could take on a Cat 400 or even a Cummins 400 for pulling power. I built (had built for me actually) a single drive Co4070 pulling volume freight -- now that was unbeatable in the hill climbing stakes with its 15 speed direct and later 9 speed overdrive. Not fast with the 15 but jet propelled with the factory 9 o/d. Where o/d stands for overdrive NOT overdosed.
I remember as a child my dad drove a Detroit in a Diamond Rio cement mixer, 30 years later I can still hear my dad grabbing gears. I so wish I could drive a Detroit just one time, nothing ever created sounds so fine
Back in 1995,I drove a 1985 GMC general with an 8 V92. It liked the oil, marked it's territory where ever you parked it too!! Miss that ol truck. The sound of your engine brought back memories
We cut the muffler off our 6v92ta at my fire department and holy shit it sounds like a wet dream 🤩 I wish Detroit still made these in the USA 🇺🇸 damn fine motor right here
If only we could still get two-stroke detroits today for our relatively older project/hot rod trucks just for the fun of of having that sweet sound of an 8V92.
@@eroc1970 ooooooo... can it be something achievable in the United States though? Or am I S.O.L. due to the country's stringent emissions requirements?
To hint on my plan of my build it would consist of a 1976 White 4800 sleeper with the Detroit 8V92 and a Fruehauf trailer and strictly dedicated in support of Stephen King. Har har
@@jbussey5301 in most states as long as you meet or exceed emissions standards for the year of the vehicle the swap would be legal so basically any truck older than 1990
That has got to be the sweetest sound on gods green earth. I ran a few 8v92 silver series when I was active duty Marine Corps and they always asked me why I kept em firewalled when I drove em 🤣🤣🤣
@@mikesharon241 When I 1st started driving I was told the best way to drive them Detroits Was to 1st slam the door on your thumb then get in it and take off.
When Cass Elliot sang "Make your own kind of music" I'm not sure if this is what she had in mind. Northfolk Southern has 2 stroke EMD 16-645E3's and 16-710's around Sharonville I like hearing.
Wow wow wow, words can't describe how much I love that sweet sound! Just music to my ears all day long! What make and model of truck is this? What year? I assume a 10 speed, right? Please, please make longer videos of this amazing truck!
@@tomromanski7925 Sounds great with the straights in the video. But I'd probably have to muffle a truck if I spent 10 hours a day in this area. I had a straight stack Pete, but I pulled 80k straight uphill out of this valley, and had to muffle it. Needed cutouts like old hot rods had . Some guys hate the green screamers, but the sound is like therapy to me.
@@tomromanski7925 Makes sense. Cool that you can show a working rig. I was working on an early 60s Freightliner COE with a good 6V 71 and Spicer 12, but living in CA I don't think CARB smog police will let me put it on the road. Lots of good rigs wasted in this state.
I know exactly what it is, every time I get a truck with a stick and a Jake that's how I shift, with the window cracked of course!! I use to come down the carousel into the Lincoln Tunnel like that, LOVE the sound of them Jakes!! I hope to have an old truck with an 8V92, it's the last thing my grandfather drove, an 81 General I think.
Hello again! By chance do you know what injectors your engine has and what the HP rating is? I need to bump mine up a bit. I'm 357hp @ 1600 using 9E85 injectors according to the data sticker on the Valve cover.
Hi, sounds like you have a derated engine. Is it a California truck? I have 9A90 injectors 435hp at 2100 rpm. You should be able to adjust your governor to hit 2100 and make more hp
Hey Tom, great video -- thanks for sharing. What are your splits (rpm wise) and did you just delete the mufflers and pipe through without a resonator? I am assuming 5" pipes?
Thanks, I usually shift around 1800 to 2000 rpm, and just swapped mufflers for 5 in straight pipes. I run mufflers normally, just put the pipes on for shows.
@@tomromanski7925thanks for the info. I’m assuming the straight pipes are too noisy to live with while working it? What’s your real-world working fuel economy at full weight?
I run the truck locally, so driving through neighborhoods with straight pipes would probably make a lot of people angry. With the windows closed, it's not bad, but it does get to you after a while with them open. I've only made one run over the road with a light load and got around 5mpg avg doing 70 75. I'm sure if I stayed around 60 65, it would improve a lot.
@@tomromanski7925 Good to know, thanks., What rear ends do you have in it. I am assuming that at 70/75 you were up in the 1900rpm range not the 1650 range?
Questions: I'm looking into buying an 8v92t truck. How heavy are your loads on average, what's your rear gear ratio, and finally, what's your average MPGS? Thank you so much for your help. BTW she sounds GREAT!
Hey Chris, this truck hauls 80 to 90k loads every day. All local stuff, within 100 mile radius. This truck was built for the highway, has 3.70 gears with 13 speed overdrive trans. Will do 65 70 with a load no problem on flat ground. Good avg speed is 60. I get about 5 mpg, which isn't bad for a 40 year old truck, but that's also local driving. Haven't really had a long run to see highway mileage. If you're looking to buy one to use every day, they are very reliable, not much to go wrong. But if there is a problem, you better know someone who can work on them if not yourself, because it's real hard to find a good mechanic who still knows how to work on a 2 stroke detroit. And there are still plenty of parts available if you need them too.. But there sure is nothing better than that sound. Good luck!
@@tomromanski7925 I was certified by Central Detroit Diesel back in the 90s. I worked in parts for over 10 years, but still had to get certified so that we knew exactly what the customer was taking about. I'm looking at a '79 GMC Cab over, 13 spd and 3.70 gears. I now pull box van with 8 to 9k lbs of cargo. Was hoping to get around 6 at 65-68 mph. But I'm not sure if I'm being realistic. I'm hopeful. It's a really cool truck
Well sounds like you got it covered, and you may get 6mpg with that weight, but maybe at 60mph. It's worth a shot, if not it's a fun ride no matter what!
Hey Paul! No clutch, just hitting the sweet spot. Jake's are hitting between shifts too. The trans shifts nice and I know the truck really well. So much fun to drive.
CLUTCH?! WHAAAAAT?! I knew as soon as I heard him going through the gears! I guess that's what I just for going on the road at 2 months old, I'm 53 now!! HAHAHAHA, LOVE THEM 8V92's!!
@@tomromanski7925 Understand, Little too big for me anyway. In this vid, when you let off gas, you are NOT using a jake brake or am i wrongI? I have alot two stroke (road bikes , snowmobile, dirt bikes et) now that I drive( (some on RU-vid). II would like a 6-71 (probably what I want light on HP) 8v71, 6v96 single axle truck. Turbo more power, but sounds better N/A Take either I am actively looking. It's all about being 2 stroke. This is maybe your best sounding vid please make more. You camera pics up sound well and would also like ti see what your tach is at. OK I won't drive you crazy. Bye. stay healthy. Long live 2 -Strokes!
@@tomromanski7925 IMO Detroit's 2 sound better without when not needed -> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OJfCqYsV1_o.html. I had a 2 stroke Enduro (RT3) motorcycle and basically Jake is similar applying cylinder decompression. It does help slow you down if I understand , but I don't use when just going through the gears. Many tuckers do like their Jake and important feature for them. Make America 2 stroke again
Old man told me back in the day off highway logging firstbtruck he ran was a two stroke jimmy accidentally started it backwards rolling down a hill thought he blew her up lol
I actually did that once. Slammed on the brake real hard at low speed to avoid something and the engine stalled and restarted itself. Let out the clutch in first gear and I went backwards. Put it in reverse and went forward. Freaked me out, so I shut it off, restarted it and everything was normal again. What a crazy feeling, I sure thought I broke something!
@@tomromanski7925 oh ok. Tha I you fornthe reply. The reason I asked is because I'm looking at a GMC General that has the same engine and I want run it in service, but my concern is parts availability and people who know how to work on them. I'm mechanically inclined so I mean I could buy a service manual and learn. I guess I just wanna know, how reliable are these babies? Because I really wanna run one.
@@88BroughamLS, these engines are very reliable, if maintained correctly and proper oil is used. Parts are still available from detroit diesel, and aftermarket as well, although they might have to be ordered. It is hard to find mechanics that still work on these engines, but they are out there, mostly in marine service, where these engines are still used in many large boats. Only downfall is they all eventually have a few small oil leaks that you learn to live with. If you have any mechanical background, they are easy to keep tuned, you just need some special tools, and manuals are available online. If you have the chance to buy one I wouldn't hesitate, just enjoy it!
@@tomromanski7925 thank you so much for replying and giving that information. That's just confirmation I needed!! By the way. I love your truck. I'm so jealous. Please make some more videos of that beauty!!!
