9/11 Pentagon Attack Flight 77 RADAR and ATC Recording - Reagan National

RADAR track of AA Flight 77 as it entered the DC area and struck the Pentagon. Flight 77 appears as a red Primary target only and enters the Radar display at around the 3:45 mark from the center left of the screen. The Pentagon is situated near the center of the screen, I am assuming the very center is a Regan National Airport next door to the Pentagon.

For those wondering why the time stamp in the corner is not showing the correct time...it actually is. The time shown is Coordinated Universal time or UTC. It's better known as Zulu time. Airlines and ATC use Zulu time as a standard reference rather than having to constantly change clocks with time zones. So if there are conspiracy theorists out there looking for ammunition...it won't be found here. The time is correct. The data is correct.

+DatkLight753 Except that it's not correct. The 757 is identified as "LOOK", and it disappears from the radar screen at 13:38:18. The official time of the explosion was 9:37:46. So this is 32 seconds discrepancy. Plus whatever time the 757 may have spent below the radar, maybe 2 seconds or more when its altitude was too low to identify it.

@MetalJeeper Jeeper - Sorry but you don't seem to have a reply option available to you, so I hope you read this. The radar image came from the NARA as a result of several FOIA requests. The raw data was them put together by 9/11 researchers using the 84RADES RS3 software which comes with the download at 911datasets.org. Feel free to download and check yourself. The time stamp at the top left corner is in UTC, also known as zulu time. WORD31 was an E4B, correct, but it was airborne at 0927 - 1327z - which is the 2:20 minute mark in the video if you look East of Reagon towards Langley. You can hear WORD31 make its initial contact with Reagan National controllers just after that mark. It's path took it well south of the National Capital. It was not the aircraft that was spotted flying over the White House. VENUS77 is the E4B which was spotted over the White House and Capital after the Pentagon was hit. The video does not go on for long enough to show his holding pattern over Richmond. It has been speculated that VENUS77 was holding nearby in anticipation that Air Force One may be coming back to Langley, but of course eventually didn't. The LOOK tag doesn't sit directly on top of next to the target. If you look at the target for any other aircraft, and then look how far away its tag is from its radar target, its pretty much the same distance as LOOK is from the red primary. wow, you can really tell they didn't know how to fly the thing straight, people seem to forget what the nations ATC had to deal with that day. unprecedented complete closing of the airspace, landing something along the lines of 5,500 airborne flghts in just half an hour. AFTER watching everything unfold on the news.

Hi there. I've been studying this radar video for a while now, and I was wondering if someone could help me pinpoint a few locations: WORD 31, GOFER 06, and VENUS 77 all took off from Andrews AFB, a few miles SSE of KDCA. So then I'm looking at VENUS 22 (a Gulfstream) , which comes from the South, heads SE @ 4100 ft / 230kts. This by itself seems a bit fast at that altitude! It keeps heading SE, then NE, back SE again, then just East. It kind of circled around far outside of the immediate DC airspace. I tried to find this approximate location on Google Earth, and it looks like it's around Twin Shields Golf Course. Can anyone confirm this, or maybe give me the correct location that plane was circling? WORD 31 left the screen @ 13:50 on the far left side flying 17.000 ft / 430 kts. Some say WORD 31 was the NAOC E4B, but that's impossible because we see the E4B in the CNN footage taken just approx. 10 minutes after the Pentagon attack. VENUS 77 was another E4B that took off from Andrews @ 20:20, flying VFR and staying in a teardrop pattern as it climbed to 12.000 ft / 360 kts at the time the video ended. "American 77" is only visible as a red primary (blip), and I actually lose it for a while until at 9:10 we can hear two controllers saying in the background "primary target heading for P-56 West-10West fast moving". At 13:27 GOFER 06 reports "that aircraft is down, he's at our 12 o'clock position, looks like it's just North-West of the airfield" At 13:55 GOFER 06 reports "it looks like that aircraft crashed into the Pentagon, sir." The controller doesn't even react on air. He doesn't ask for confirmation. Slightly more laughable is the controller saying to Colgan 5981 upon being asked if that was smoke coming out the Pentagon: "Uh yeah, it's believed it was planned, I guess." What a Gomer!! Anyway, it's been a while since I last stared at ATC radar images, so I hope I interpreted it all correctly.

Off topic from this video, does anyone know where I can get info on what all the little dashes and such are on the screen? I'm assuming the dashed lines are prefered paths, or "highways in the sky" but no idea what the rest mean. I've always wondered.

CCWSig They are FAA video maps and you can submit a foia request but it’s been 5 years so I assume you’ve moved on or figured it out.

Zulu time is used in aviation for consistency around the world. American 77's transponder was turned off long before any of the planes crashed. Besides, the shoot down authorization from Dick Cheney didn't come until about 20 minutes after the last plane (United 93) had already crashed.

Where did this radar image come from? The time stamp in the top left corner is kind of throwing me off a bit, because I'm trying to establish the actual times of certain aircrafts. www.historycommons.org/context.jsp?item=a943secondnaoc is saying that WORD 31 ((an E4B) took off at 9:37 and that it was the white aircraft people were seeing around the Capitol and White House, but according to these images it didn't just take off earlier, it immediately headed Westbound for Offutt AFB, NE (to take part in Global Guardian) like its reported to have done. VENUS 77, another E4B, then took off around 9:41 and circled the Capitol and White House area before entering a holding pattern above Richmond, VA. According to the above radar images, that aircraft never came close to Richmond, but instead stayed in the immediate DC area. Also, cjnewson88, you say that AA77 appears at the 3:45 mark center left of the screen, so I follow this aircraft, when the LOOK appears, the red primary is right next to BOBCAT 14 at the 10:49 mark. (of course BOBCAT 14 is at FL230). Wouldn't this mean that that red primary and the LOOK aircraft are two different aircrafts?

Video and audio obviously represent record of events as seen from screen of controller of Dulles Departures at Dulles International Airport in Washington DC. Disambiguation of radar: 12 o'clock on radar represents North. All airplanes data (visible as letters and numbers) is positioned 4 o'clock relative to airplane symbol on radar, which represents its position. Airplanes position on radar are represented by letter (C, T, E, W, S), number (1, 2) or dot. I don't know what those symbols means but they do not pertain to aircraft's weight, class or transponder type. If you watch closely some airplanes switch on radar from one symbol to another - ex @4.02 at 12 o'clock SWA1458 from letter T to C. I do suspect that letter refers to controller assignment (signifies which controller watches the plane), as all C marked planes are eventually directed (south or west) by controller. It seems however radar is little bit lagging in correctly displaying transfer from one controller to another, making all harder to see and deduct. Well anyway that's a guess. Data of plane is displayed as follow: top row is airplane call sign or squawk. If it has letters it's a call sign. SWA1485 is for instance "South West 1485", AWE85 is "Cactus 85" (call sign of US Air airlines). Besides few exceptions (as Cactus) letters are intuitive to airline name and it's call sign. Numbers without letter mean squawk. 3667 is airplane (most likely small general aviation plane) with assigned 3667 squawk code. Squawk 1200 stands for uncontrolled plane (again most likely GA) flying visually. Any other than 1200 squawk code means that plane is controlled or followed (directed or watched over by controller - in this case some other controllers). Second row of plane radar data: first 3 numbers refers to altitude measured in hundreds of feet: 150 means 15,000 ft, 210 - 21,000 ft etc. Above 18,000ft altitudes are called in aviation as flight levels so 21,000 for example is "Flight Level 210". Two additional numbers after altitude stands for ground speed measured in tens of knots. 21 means 210 kts. First mention of unidentified plane take place at 9:10. It can be heard in background as some other controller (military?) says: "We have primary target at B52 (probly zone name) left west fast moving". I know often times at airports military and civilian controllers share same radar and happens so seat next to each other. Hence a guess. Don't know how it is at Dulles. Plane appears on radar at 10:47. If each circle on radar represents 5 miles (?) you will see its data (displayed as: "LOOK" with "27" in second row) 8 miles from center at 7 o'clock, next to green circled letter M and plane symbol (letter S) 7 miles at 8 o'clock. 27 stands for 270 kts. If you watch you will see speed will increase over time, reaching 380 kts before impact. At 11:45 another flying over it plane (GOFER 06) is asked to visually ID it than turn right to follow it. You can see both planes on radar. At 13:21 LOOK (flight 77) disappears from radar (that's obviously where Pentagon is) and GOFER-06 reports plane down.

I forgot to add it since someone already asked that question. YES dots represent flight track were spacing of dots does additionally give visual clue of it speed. More widely spaced dots means higher speed.

At CCSWig. Lines or radar clearly show airspace boundaries, some other marks I suspecting represent visual clues (as say smoke stuck), intersections, jetways etc. Comparing radar screen marks with Aviation VFR map of area should be sufficient to make all marks clear. It can be easily found online and printed.

I think you've confused this video with the other one, because this absolutely displays data from DCA. There is a similar video, however, which showcases IAD, and another for BWI.

Mostly correct (I'm an FAA controller myself). The letters are the sector with control of the datablock (C is generic for Center/ARTCC control, the others are sectors within Potomac TRACON). + symbol is mode C transponder equipped that isn't being tracked by the TRACON (including VFR's on a 1200 code and aircraft on unique codes being tracked by other facilities). Red dots are raw primary targets. FAA and military controllers do not sit with each other (FAA is a civilian agency), but we coordinate with them through landlines. The person who noticed the primary is civilian and he's referring to it heading toward P56 which is prohibited area 56 over the white house and capitol (that rectangular blob shape just above the center). "LOOK" is the track somebody started on it (controllers will name it something like that, or "UNK"). It actually disappears at 12:55 when the track goes into coast mode (the "CST" in the datablock) which means it can't find the primary target it was trying to track.

iam not sure what i see here the echoes with white letters and numbers are planes with working transponders right? but what are the red points? ghost echoes, ground clutter, bogeys ...? and flight 77 without working transponder is one of the red points, right?

The flight listed as "LOOK" in the center circle disappears at 13:16. Then the traffic controller makes the announcements.
