9,500-Mile Update in our Long Term 2024 Mazda CX-50

Another 1,500 miles of pavement have passed beneath our 2024 Mazda CX-50; and while that isn’t an overwhelming amount of road, it’s plenty enough to weigh in on another update.
First, we’ve seen an increase in efficiency. Our most recent log shows 25.3 mpg, reflecting a small, but welcomed uptick-- and right on par with EPA ratings.
And we’re still as welcoming of all 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque that this engine loves to put down when sipping Premium 93 fuel. This 2.5-liter I4 is impressive; and while you don’t necessarily need the turbocharged variant, we’ve certainly enjoyed our time spinning it up.
Turbocharged engines aren’t the novelty they were a few decades ago, but they still represent an enhanced level of performance. That’s exactly what it does here in this CX-50. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a performance SUV, but the extra oomph provided by the turbo does make things more interesting than the non-turbo four-cylinder.
In the past, we’ve commented on how well Mazda utilities handle, and that includes this CX-50. In our original Road Test, we noted how “direct and quick to respond” the 50 felt on our test course. And even all this time later, we still enjoy the balance struck between comfort and agility.
And the Terracotta-wrapped interior is equally dashing: Premium in appearance and feel, with the amenities to match. One new staffer did have some questions about the command dial system, but after one commute out to one of our testing sites he got it. Very intuitive overall.

Sad that they are now ruining a lot of their vehicles by forcing crappy cylinder-deactivation & start/stop engine tech onto their customers. Glad that my 2022 CX-30 Carbon Edition has neither.

@@lucasrocha633 Yeah, you are forced to buy a turbo trim if you don't want Mazda cylinder-deactivation for the most part, which brings another set of potential problems of its own (having a turbo engine). Not sure if the turbo trims have awful iStop (start/stop) or not though.

Enjoy my CX-50. Only complaints: 1. Driver seat length a little short. Lacks leg support. 2. Few software bugs: Satellite Radio starts at Station 1 vevery time you want to manually pick a station vs station you are on. Not fun scrolling 200 stations. Additionally, can add a radio station to favorites multiple times. Screen auto-dimming at night was broken. Had to click brightness button on dashboard to maximum and then click one level lower. Finally, I switch between work and personal phones frequently wish the connectivity and devices was not buried as deep in the menu.

I'm over 6' and no problem with CX50 drivers seat. When I go into radio, it starts with what I was listening the last time I used it. I have no problem with connection of my android phone (I never had any problems with my previous car either, and my wife drives CX5 to which my phone connects seamlessly when needed).

CX-50 is a great vehicle, but not as solidly built as it's "Made in Japan" daddy, the CX-5. That being said, it'll be putting miles on the odometer long after the VW Atlas and Mitsubishi are parked in the junk yard.

@DrCharlesMontague

I’ll trust a turbo engine from Mazda way more than many other automakers. I had an Audi that went 190k miles before some sludge took out a camshaft and ended the engine, but the original turbo was still just fine! And again, I’d feel even more confident in a Mazda setup.
