Amazing how many good tips you can fit into 10 minutes. I really find night a kind of comfy blanket wrapped around me,, maybe I'm strange, but I love it. Agree a longer lens is a good idea for night, even if you can only open up to f2.8 that's still very useable. Rain can make for great photos in the day and at night it's just magic, lighting really comes alive. Thanks for posting.

Your video was published at the right time for me. I retired yesterday. No real concrete plans yet. I do want to spend more time doing photography. I’ve never done night photography other than Times Square Ann d that is almost daylight. I have been inspired by the photography of Ernst Haas and soul lighter. If they can produce wonderful images like they did with film cameras I certainly can produce images at night with my digital cameras. I do use Fuji and look forward to taking your recommendations to heart. Mask On Nurse Marty

Thanks Tim. Always helps to get new ideas or reminders. Personally, I leave the ISO on Auto. The cameras are so good these days that a higher ISO doesn't make a lot of difference. Personally, I set a minimum 1/250 because I don't have a steady hand, lens wide open and yes, you're quite right, a 50mm on APSC is ideal.

See a lot of street shooters seem to use primes, being new to all of this, why not zooms? Love your channel!
@timjamiesonphotos
@timjamiesonphotos Год назад
Thank you! Lots of reasons to shoot prime, they are faster, open up wider, let in more light, are often sharper, are generally small and unobtrusive, and they force you to be creative with a fixed focal length. Can still do street photography with a zoom tho :)

Hello there, amazing video and very helpful. I've got a question, I'm a beginner night photographer with a panasonic camera and sometimes when i shoot at night on manual mode, the camera lets out a beep and the settings of aoerture and sutter speed on the screen become red for a second, and i can't shoot for some reason, do you have any idea why that might happen and how can i set my camera to avoid it? Thank you

Thank you so much for the really helpful videos. They have truly inspired me to venture into street photography. I do have a question regarding GDPR rules. I assume you don't ask for permission from every individual featured in your photographs :) Also, I'm curious about the aspect of intellectual rights. Can a person appearing in a street photo claim any rights over the image?
@timjamiesonphotos
@timjamiesonphotos 9 месяцев назад
My pleasure! Glad you enjoy them and find them useful :). To answer your question, it really depends where you live. In the uk photos of people in public is perfectly legal so don’t need any permission and no one has any intellectual rights to your work even if featured in the photo :)

A well-done video, and a lot of great tips. But, as a formally-trained photographer, allow me to help you out with some technical advice. You may think it's pedantic, but just like any other industry, trade or skill, there are correct terms in photography. I know, for shutter speeds, it's common these days for RU-vid-trained photographers to say "one over 125" for 1/125, but it's actually quite wrong. If you want to project credibility or knowledge, the correct way is "one-twenty-fifth of a second" or "a hundred and twenty-fifth of a second." Likewise, 1/60 is "one sixtieth" (not "one over 60") and 1/500 is "one five hundredth" (and not "one over 500").

Help! I'm using an old dslr Nikon d5300, tried night street photography yesterday and I can't go up 1/60 or 1/100 of a shutter, and also can't go down ISO 4000, as the images turning out to be darker, even with a light source like a street lamp. I'm shooting wide open using a 50mm lens f1.8. What should I do?
@timjamiesonphotos
@timjamiesonphotos Год назад
Hello, with an older camera you’ll need to go for a higher iso and have more noise in your images at night, you can try a slower shutter speed and try to hold your camera steady, or you’ll need to go to somewhere that is a bit brighter, like the centre of a city with lots of street light :)

Hey, just recently got into photography and have a canon 700d with the efs 18-55mm lens. I want to start doing more potrait/night time street photography and was looking at the canon ef 50mm f/1.8 STM lens. Would you recommend this lens for a beginner?
@timjamiesonphotos
@timjamiesonphotos Год назад
Hey! You can’t go wrong with a nifty 50! But on a crop sensor camera like the 700d you may find it’s to narrow a field of view, or not! Definitely worth testing out first to see if you like the focal length, you might consider a 35mm instead, if the 50 is too tight. But at 1.8 that’ll let in plenty of light for night shooting, and creamy bokeh for portraits :)
