Im trying the exact same thing here with my RX 570 4Gb to 8Gb but I cant find the chip. Its an elipse something chip but I cant find the 8Gb version..:(
it all depends on the memory controller in the GPU chip. If there are graphics card models with the same number of VRAM chips but with higher capacity then you have a good chance to increase VRAM. As long as the GPU itself is not deprived of memory controllers by cutting out the defective areas with a laser at the factory. Maybe you will need a bios from a card with more VRAM. But simply translating a higher capacity mem chips does not necessarily mean increasing VRAM. If the VRAM memory chips are within the specification of the GPU controller it should work. Sometimes on old retro stuff You can increase VRAM from 16 to 32 or from 32 to 64 MB if GPU suport more ram in higher models and You find right mem chips today.
Pain to watch... please learn solder on some inimportant salvage , not vitnage parts needed to rtepair. For clean PB tin best use big tin bulb and dont touch pads. Aha and soldering iron need to upgrade to direct heat like T12 even cheap clones from China.
ahh and second big mistake. Why hide with flux all pins and tru solder lottery? Better solder 1-2 pins on one side and reposition chip if needed and again solder 1-2 pins. After this You can add more flix on rest pins and solder. Shorted pins can easy repair with solder wick and voilà done.
Any updates? im looking at buying 12 3070's with burnt out memory modules lmao, even replacing them at all would be a great push for me to buy these if they are replacable
