People who are early extenders tend to scoop the ball instead of compressing it, which accounts for the lack of distance. Part of this is because of the natural deceleration of the body and hands that allow for the clubhead to actually catch up to the ball at impact. I think it's one of the most common mistakes for amateur golfers. A great drill to help with fixing at least the "feel" part of this motion is to have your brother address the ball as he normally would, then turn towards the target with his hips about 40 degrees (belt buckle is a great reference point) while keeping everything else (head, club shaft, club face) still. The shoulders will turn just a little, the knees will as well, and the hands should move towards the target a few inches. The club face will be slightly de-lofted as well. This will give him a better idea of where his hands need to be (slightly forward of his starting position) when he actually makes impact. The goal, then, is to get to that position in the downswing by using the body to pull the hands down, then let the hands take over just after impact and get out in front of the body on the follow through. A good intermediate step is to have him drag the club along the ground to follow through from the position I mentioned earlier. If he can do this with his full swing, he'll probably gain at least 15-20 yards per club. If he hits a 7 iron 130 yards or less, possibly even more. What helped me with this is really concentrating on the left side of my body (I'm right handed and play right handed), especially my left hand. My swing thought from the top of my backswing to my follow through is just to do everything with the left side of my body: drive with my left hip, pull down with my left lats and arm, and backhand the ball with my left hand. I carry my 7 iron about 176 and I'm 5'7", 150 lbs. More importantly, I've figured out how to control my shots more with this swing. Before, I could only hit high slices and fades. Now, my natural shot is a straight ball or slight draw. I also hit all of my clubs a good 25-30 yards more (carry my driver 275-285 yards depending on my swing speed of 107-11 mph). I hope this helps and wasn't too long of a post. I'm no expert but I managed to get myself to be a single handicap golfer in my 5th year playing. Cheers.
At the beginning of the Spring this year I was shooting mid 90's now I just about broke 80 this week I love watching the improvement I owe some of it to you because you gave me the spirit to go out and just get better
Early extending adds loft to the shot, makes sense if you think about right arm and wrist straightening. If he hits high weak shots then that's what's happening. Great video!
Thanks for the great video of the course. Heading to play there in a few days and this provided a great view of the back 9. Your nephew? is probably a great amateur by now!
What I've noticed with your driver, you get to the top of your backswing and start an over the top swing but save it by dropping the handle quickly to get it somewhat back on plane but unfortunately hitting a lot of toe strikes with an open face or sometimes rotating the hands too quickly causing the hook.
I also take monster divots. Saw a tip about how all great wedge players swing with an in to out arc around the impact area instead of more straight towards the ball. This helped my distance control and also eliminates the huge divots. This works with all irons more in to out swing path and square it up instead of out to in and trapping the ball.
+k20ahole I think Zach Johnson does that with his wedges. I heard about his coach telling him to hit short little low draws with his wedges to get the feeling. Good point!
Zachary Heidrich Golf Replacing divots fails to result in regrowth of the turf 99% of the time. Sand is a much more efficient method of filling divots if your goal is to regrow the grass
Hey Brendon watched the Chris Ryan video about the backswing, just wondering if your feeling a more upright takeaway when you take it back. Your swing looks great by the way.
What App are you using to get your distance and line ? Do any clubs prevent you taking a phone on the course ? Looked a nice course to me, those bunkers looked interesting.
Take my advice, don't mess with the kid's grip. It's not even that strong to begin with, and strong grips in general are beneficial as they promote a release that's much less flippy.
For dustin, look at his rotation, or lack thereof, he has very little shoulder turn. He completes his rotation around 730!. I know for you (and me) we struggle with overswing but he has the complete opposite problem. Now as for a fix , beats me but I'm sure that there is a sequence problem. Since he completes his rotation first , then lifts the arms, then transitions. Also are his hands behind the club head with every shot? I understand that it is setup but it gives me the heebie jeebies. I literally want to just shift his hands forward. Note ; not a golf instructor :)
I think you are right jay. No shoulder turn and he loses his connection between core and arms. He keeps the connection when he's chipping though probly why he's much better at it.
Great video. My two cents on your brother's swing: Tempo is REALLY good. And that strike suggests he has great touch. But that early extend (which also seems to make his touch so good) KILLS his distance. It's almost like he's literally pitching his driver and irons. If he used that hip turn more and just trusts that his arms will "get there" (I.e., bottom of the arc, when he needs to use the touch to square the face), his swing would probably use a lot more of the power he generates in his hips. But it's trust in the lag more than anything.
@7:50, your brother wasn't early extending... he yanked it because of too strong of a grip, then hit it off the toe with a closed face at impact. He's losing distance with clubs because his attack angle is way too steep, too much back spin, leaves shots short!
+BE BETTER GOLF okie dokie if flexibility is the issue maybe looking at a Danny Lee gravity golf approach or a Don Strathan sing surgeon more vertical swing
+BE BETTER GOLF No carts for junior tournaments. When it's that hot they usually let the younger kids have caddies, but for the high schoolers they don't. Sucks haha
Early extension and casting actually removes speed from the swing. The more aggression and speed he tries to add, the more speed will be subtracted from the swing. So if your bro likes weak ass swings tell him to keep casting and early extending.
Hi Brendon, You are way to hyper when you play golf, you look like your on speed, cool down you are going to have less problem with your tempo, BIG RESPIRATION. Finish with if you have enough spin aim for the pin!!! Normand
Ur gripping to much up on ur driver when u grip it that low ur basically hitting a three wood instead of a driver if u move ur hands back u will be hitting 300 more often
if you'd start to hit a draw your driver will be even better. if you try to cut but double cross yourself your screwed. plus there's nothing wrong with playing a hook on purpose
Dude your close in this video. You are just starting your downswing incorrectly. I'd love to see you take it a little less to the inside. I't causes the club to get behind your hands and your long backswing then ends up across the line. From that point you tend to be a little quick starting your downswing with a lean forward and a shoulder move left which causes you to cast/an over the top move that gets you to steep (hence the huge divots) I'd like to see you gather yourself at the top with a little shorter backswing. From that point and I know it sounds a lot easier than it is but the hands should start to fall, think of when you were a kid carrying a grocery bag and you would swing it up creating a feeling of weightlessness and as it would start to fall you would use the momentum to swing it to the other side with almost know effort beside a little whip at the bottom. Remember how your body would just naturally turn right then left, right then left, and how good it felt when there was no slack in the bag but the only way you could do it was with rhythm and letting gravity do the rest. The club head is the grocery bag. I hope that makes sense. (love the channel keep up the good work)
Dustin may just need new clubs I recently bought new clubs I was normally hitting my 7 iron 170. New clubs made my stance a little taller I now hit my 7 iron 190-205.
he's kicking you the ball to pick up that thing was like 4 feet away/ several 'gimmies'.... doubt you wouldve made that lets be realistic here- only cheatin yourself..
