@@intellectually_lazy No seriously. It was all explained in a Futurama comic released about ten years ago called Captain Brannigan: The Windbag Soldier. Fry, Leela, and Bender make a delivery to the Teslatrons, who love Earth because an Earthling saved their planet from a hostile invasion. The Planet Express team is in utter disbelief when they say that Earthling is Zapp Brannigan. The Teslatrons show them the statue of Zapp they constructed, which lacked the Space Captain’s big gut, cocky smirk, and of course, tiny junk. Still not convinced, Leela and the others returned to Earth to ask Kif if what the Teslatrons said was true. Kif confirms that it is and tells them what happened. Years ago, Zapp was the greatest soldier that DOOP ever had, being the fastest, strongest, and shockingly, the kindest man one could meet (not too dissimilar to Captain America). In fact, when Cadet Kif was being mocked by the other soldiers for being scrawny, Zapp came to defend him, reminding the other soldiers that they are brothers in arms. Zapp took Kif under his wing, training the young cadet himself, so by the time he graduated, Kif was by Zapp’s side in the line of battle. Zapp’s reputation didn’t go unnoticed by the powers that be, and upon hearing about Zapp’s accomplishments, Nixon had a plan to clone Zapp to create an army. To complete such a task, Nixon went to Mom for funding such a project. She called for her two chief scientists, Farnsworth and Wernstrom. Unfortunately, Wernstrom was chosen to head up the project, because he was the only one who had a cloning machine, leaving Farnsworth feeling embittered. Sometime later, Zapp was persuaded to go through with the project. He was placed in the cloning chamber, as Wernstrom was ready to power the machine, unaware that Farnsworth had secretly with the machine to make the clones come out half-baked. The machine was activated, and to their horror, Zapp’s DNA started to mutate, which was having an effect on him as well as the clones. They manage to shut down the machine, and Zapp steps out. Once he recovers, Zapp immediately tries to hit on Mom, before asking for a towel ... made from velour. And as they took him home to rest, he requested to make a quick stop at a boar burger with the pizza crusts. When Zapp returned to duty, Kif was happy to have his old friend back, only to be confused when Zapp kept talking down on him, saying that he is his commanding officer, not his friend. And as his commanding officer, Zapp demanded that Kif bring him a churro and a laptop computer so he can help him sign up for a Humpster dating account. Over the next few weeks, Zapp just kept eating junk, causing him to lose his chiseled physique, treating Kif like a human shield in battle. The DOOP leader brought her concerns to Nixon, who recruited a team of Earth’s mightiest heroes for Zapp to lead into the battle, introducing the Marvelers. Turned into a disaster, as during the fight with the sentinel robot Alltron, Zapp ran away from battle, leaving the Marvelers to die. Things got worse when Zapp led attacks against parties for no apparent reason, and in the process, sending many of his soldiers to their deaths. Needing soldiers to fight against the planets that Zapp offended, Mom suggests using the mutated clones as an army. Any clones that survive will be eliminated, so no one will ever find out about the cloning mishap. After the battles, Nixon and Mom trick Zapp into believing he is getting a medal when they get him frozen into a statue, like Han Solo in Star Wars, which they intended to send out into space, which Kif was tasked with doing. Months later, Zapp ended up on the Teslatron’s planet with a message saying “If found return Kif Kroker on Earth”. The Teslatrons did as the note said, and brought the unfrozen Zapp to Kif, who explained the whole plot Nixon and Mom made against him. Surprisingly, Zapp now considered Kif his friend once more. Together they went to Nixon and Zapp blackmailed him into naming him Captain for Life, otherwise he would expose his cloning experiment to the world. Nixon, not wanting another scandal hanging over him, agreed to this. Zapp named Kif’s his first mate. Finally finishing the story, Kif explains the reason he still stands by Zapp is because even though he has become an incompetent buffoon, he still believes deep down that Zapp is not a bad man.

​@@intellectually_lazy For your information, there is a Futurama comic that depicts Zapp's origins, which reveals that he was once the greatest soldier the Doop ever had: brave, strong, and compassionate. Sadly, an attempt to create a clone army of him went seriously wrong, altering his DNA and brain, which left him the man he is today.
