I don’t get the tri tone sub ...do u build it from the chord your on or from the secondary dominant because then it become just going in from a half step above just like the first passing chord example
@SkilledMusician
@SkilledMusician 5 лет назад
Hey Benny! Thanks for the question. The tri-tone substitution in this context is the Dominant 7th chord a tritone away from your current dominant chord, which is very different than the chromatic pass. For example, in a ii-V-I progression in C major, so Dminor7 - G7 - Cmajor7, if I wanted to create a tritone substitution for the G7, I would use the Db7 chord, which is a tritone (3 whole steps) away. But the key to remember is this, when I play the Db7, I can play any alteration, so that Db7 chord might actually be Db7(b9, b5, 13). But when I do the chromatic pass, my root might be Db, but my chord quality would be the exact same as my Cmaj7 chord. So for the chromatic pass, my Db chord would be Db-F-Ab-C which is a Dbmajor7 chord. But in the tritone substitution, even if I played a basic Db7 chord that would be (Db-F-Ab-B) which is not the same as the chromatic pass. However, I would almost always add alterations to it, so it might be Left Hand (Db-B) and Right Hand (D-G-Bb) which is a Db7(b9,b5,13). So although the root movement is the same, the chord quality is completely different. Hope this helps!

This brings me back to all of those times in church when I would go up to the piano player and say, "what was that you did there?"...inevitably they said, "I don't remember what you are talking about" or " I don't know man, I just did it". Years of studying would have been saved for me if I just had someone to take a moment and say, "sure man let me break these chords/movements down with you" This is substantial and points those learning in the right direction. Great stuff!

Let's teach the young musicians to save up and pay these highly rehearsed musicians who took hours out of their lives to form their own style and flow of chords. Hand outs create ungrateful arrogant musicians a lot of the time.

Hey can you please next time use a easier key such like major keys: C, D, E etc. thank you! nice vid!!
@SkilledMusician
@SkilledMusician 6 лет назад
Well there is no such thing as an "easy" key, just ones that are unfamiliar. You definitely want it to be that every key is familiar. And you don't want be stuck only knowing C, D, E, F, and G. Learn all 12 keys. I actually try to make videos in a wide variety of keys to encourage musicians to learn all 12 keys.
@Davenunez01

sorry but maybe a key that most of us know a little bit more than bf? im sure that most of those who play piano isnt yet so comfortable on playing in those hard keys. Still a good video bro :) just giving my feedback :)

After having played guitar for a number of years and growing disillusioned with the ceiling I was reaching in terms of exploring advanced harmonic and theoretical concepts on the instrument, I sat down at the Casio CDP-120 collecting dust in the corner of my basement jam space and plunked down a middle C. It's been a few weeks of tinkering and memorizing basic minor and major chords, putting them together using the circle, and adding some basic extensions to make them sound a little more full, but I think stumbling upon your video here, I've hit some sore of gold mine. It's going to be awhile until I can vamp on complex changes with seemingly limitless splashes of musical color like I see you do here, but it's more a star to steer by than a goal right now. You have a gift of breaking down difficult concepts and making them approachable even to a beginner like myself. Thanks for the inspiration!
