DARPA is an acronym for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. It is part of the US Military Complex. DARPA is independent of other military R and D and reports directly to senior DoD management.
DARPA has circa 290 government employees in 6 technical offices, with 100 program managers who oversee about 250 R&D programs.
Did DARPA invent the World Wide Web, which paved the way for the modern Internet?
The agency developed and furthered much of the conceptual basis for the ARPA NET. ARPA NET was a prototypical communications network launched over half a century ago in the late nineteen sixties. They invented the digital protocols that gave birth to the Internet.
DARPA operates by something called the 5-year rule. Employees and associates of DARPA come from academia, industry, and government agencies for limited stints, generally three to five years. That deadline fuels the signature DARPA urgency to achieve success in less time than reasonable in a conventional setting.
The evolution of ARPA NET is a tumultuous history defined by discrete phases with key landmark stories. Most of you will know about some, others not so much; all are hugely impactful in all sorts of ways.
The phases in the evolution of the ARPA NET have shaped our digital lives and bled into our real lives in many domains.
