Hey Scott I am a painter in Sydney and I have found that staining the timber prolongs the life instead of putting a clear. It’s like putting on a clear jumper to stop getting sunburnt instead of putting on a coloured one. Love the channel mate.

Here in Aussie we always install a Protectadeck uPvc strip on top of the joists. It helps seal around the screw and deflects rain off the joists mitigating long term rot. Should be available at Bunnings in NZ.

Love this channel! First class always. In the US it seems everyone has gone to composite decking. High end homes may go hardwood. But you don't see it too much anymore unless the homeowner has plenty of money to pay someone to maintain it.

Another good trick is chalk line center of joists before decking.This gives you a straight line in case your joist has a slight round and allows you to keep fixings straight over long runs.
@danielharris1360
@danielharris1360 Год назад
May work with blue chalk (I have done it) but avoid red chalk. Red chalk has a grease in it that will stain the wood permanently. It’s intended to make lines last on slabs/subfloors even after rain.

Another exciting episode for sure. But your accent on "deck" and references to "screw" and "screwing quick," "sticking up," "getting it all straight," "having a hardwood deck'" and finally "rub those suckers out" were just funny. I won't even go into the black marks on your palm.

i like to use an offcut of decking as a story rod, i put one measured line of fasteners in, then scribe that spacing onto the offcut and notch them on the drop saw. then line up the edge of the board with the screws in the module boards, make sure the notches look rightly placed on the decking and then just run the drill bit down each notch. super fast and no pencil lines to rub out, and the notches also help stop the bit from wandering at all

I've binge watched many of your videos. Have enjoyed them and the care put into your craft down there in NZ. On the other hand there was just something about the way your e's in the word deck, were lighter than the harsher sounds up here in CA. The e's sounded like i's and it was amazing how all of your advice still seemed amusingly valid. And yes, as the individual before me said, trimming the bush around your deck will make it look bigger

When staining/sealing any outdoor timber decks etc, you should always use a pigmented stain/oil/varnish. Another tip is to paint the tops of your joists with tare paint and nail a rubber strip on the top before you put the deck down as this will reduce the rotting and the joist from splitting over time from nailing or screwing the deck
@flyingdutch9818
@flyingdutch9818 4 года назад
Always good listening to a kiwi talk about ‘decks’. I build on average 5-6 decks per year and fix the same amount each year. Most common issue is rotted joists that could so easily be avoided by putting a barrier on top (it’s protect a deck here in Oz). Ps is that ‘quilia’? Timber what we call ‘merbau’?
