2:39 the light on the left (big blue) was mine!! I lost it at Spiegel Grove on nov 16! 😭😭 (i'm almost certain it fell off when I was going back to the boat). I'm really glad it was found by you and it made it into your video though!! Please keep up the great work!

Man, I really love your stuff. I haven't been diving since the late nineties as voluntary fire fighter (I believe, but can't say for sure, since it was handled by the fire fighter orga, I got up to CMAS 2 star or so), and am now, at the ripe old age of 46, taking my first steps to get back into Scuba diving and eventually technical diving. People kept telling my I just need a re-activation course, etc., but I feel safer simply starting from scratch, which is what I am going to do with SDI. I love your videos, because they bring me back up to speed with equipment, procedure changes, etc. Keep up the great work.

I wish you would publish a night dive guide. Hard to find anything out there. Even recommended light brightness isn't documented anywhere!

I do still tell all my students to turn on their light while entering the water in case they drop it. I do turn mine off a good bit while underwater. Normally more than enough light around.

You are so fortunate to be able to get to the sand/bottom of the Spiegel Grove to treasure hunt. I was very very grateful to happen to drop my new Tovatec 1050 light during my assent from the ship, it fell out of my pocket and a Diver pointed it out to me while I was on my first (half way) stop. I looked down and thought she was pointing out that my buddy was goffing around below but then I noticed the light on the platform the morning line was attached to. I was able to shoot down and get the light only a few yards below me.. Whew!! A night dive video from you would be great! Like the previous person mentioned. DSDO! 😁

@S. C. I'm taking it with PADI next month. Not that many dives are required. If you are a proficient diver it isn't greatly expanding diving skills per sey. It is an additional skill set on top of diving. I have just under 50 dives at the moment but my instructor is confident I'm ready. If you don't feel you can complete the in water skills you can still get first aid/cpr/aed training at anytime through the red cross

One thing I do on ascent/safety stop is to turn on my backup light that I leave snapped and strapped to my left shoulder strap. Obviously, I don't want to shine down on anyone below me, but I've found that a little more light just near the surface helps the boat know where I am. Also, with it strapped down it won't accidentally shine into the eyes of someone on the boat. And since it's my backup light, then should my primary fail in those last couple of minutes, I am still well lit. And then for the emergency situation - should I somehow lose consciousness before being fully back on the boat, I have a fresh battery running a light that will make it easier to rescue me. Tank lights are nice, but they seem to only help see your buddies and others very near to you. You can't see them from far away, especially for a spotter in a boat. Now, I would love to hear improvements on this practice, ways to make it more reliable, etc. The only gotcha I can think of is accidentally shining into the eyes of someone below me, but I really can't think of a situation where I've had someone below me during my safety stop. That would likely annoy me if someone did that. Their bubbles would get annoying and I'd be too worried about them ascending into me.
@mgelax
@mgelax Год назад
Also, I've wondered about how to handle a rescue situation at night. I should ask around what others think, but in the extremely unlikely scenario of a person trapped in a night dive, if you have to return to them, how could you mark them? In the sunlight you can shoot up your DSMB on a line attached to the diver or an object next to them, but that's harder to see. I guess you could strap some sort of small flashing light to the DSMB.
@js4120
@js4120 Год назад
@Matthew Ecklund I'm not sure if this is standard, but I am usually instructed to point my light straight up on lowest setting at safety stop and until everyone has surfaced and signals ok. The boat won't approach until all divers are acounted for. A lot of the higher quality dsmb's have features like pockets for lights, and reflective strips that radar can detect. Considering this would be a bad emergency and Considering you have a backup light. I would find a way to put the backup in the dsmb to make it glow, or tie it facing up just below the surface or something similar.

Love the info on light control. James what other cool and interesting things have you found in the sand? I was I Cancun this past summer and the boat's photographer on the dive found a small gold ring. He said he found lots of things in the sand. On stringing thing was house shoe.

Lovely summary, especially the light sabre bit; I've seen that so often! I'd maybe add that lights don't always have to be on maximum. At night you will see quite enough with a 300 lumen beam and if it's silty and you have it dialled up to 3000 you likely won't see anything, except silt!

I even bolt snap my orcatorch light to my wrist strap. It seems the wrist strap is made of neoprene and loosens around the flashlight

Entered! Need me a torch! Had my first night dive a few weeks back (I normally just use my cheapy camera light for day dives) and it was phenomenal. Definitely my favourite kind of diving, wouldn't want it to be every dive but as a special treat it was great! Just a head's up, it says there's over 70 days left on the competition. Is the draw date correct?

Dive rite should discontinue the xt2 second stage. It looks and feels like a cheap plastic toy compared to the xt4. Hopefully they replace it in their AOW reg package. I like my Xt4 better than my XTX 50.
