Excellent work mate, fantastic tips/guide! Definitely agree a sand cap is the best option👍

As someone who is just beginning in the hobby I’m fully preparing myself to have yellowing/melt with my plants but ive heard both are recoverable in most cases

It often is but it does depend on the plant, most easy category plants can be recovered though :)

I’m going to try but not exactly a Walstad, I want use: 1organic soil, just a bit, 2 gravel, 3 a bag of filter media with lava rock in the back to elevate the hardscape, 4 a layer of sand , 5 aqua soil and 6 hardscape of lava rock. I want to do carpeting and I think it will be easier with aqua soil on top and all this lava will allow a lot of space for bacteria.

Sounds good mate, lava rock is a great way elevate the background :).

5 different layers before the hardscape. Sounds advanced! Can you maybe give a comment as to the purpose of each of the five layers pls ? Best. Henrik / Denmark.

@@henrikmadsen2176 the idea is to have something like a lasagne method, where you use gravel, dirt, and a sand cap but adding aqua soil to make easier the carpeting thing , also the waste will go through the aqua soil and the sand entering the dirt and gravel and then will be available for roots eventually. That’s the idea, I don’t know if works or is stupid, maybe it it’s. I’m not sure about the dirt acting like a fertilizer at the beginning due to the sand , but I saw videos where the idea is to use the dirt capped and it works as fertilizer, so I hope it works for me. Excuse my English.

@@westernization yeah, it’s working, I only have red cherry and snails. Carpet in progress with Monte Carlo, one Anubia, some fast growers and moss.

Hah I've had several runs with hygrophiia polysperma (sp?) in a few of my tanks, and removed it from most. It just goes everywhere, and ends up with roots poking out all over the place. I find like 3-6 months in it inevitably looks extremely straggly if you don't prune it super carefully. I've got a forest of it in the middle of my 40 breeder still, but that's it. I'm really eager to try one of the 12g long bookshelf tanks that are made by the same company that makes the 8g cube. Almost 36" long in a tiny 12g tank! (35.4Lx8.25Dx9.5H) Just need to find a space for a 3' long tank.

Yea I think i'm done with Hygrophila unless its a jungle scape tank, its just too much of a pain. Ooooo I will have to check that tank out, I'm planning a full shrimp rack right now as i'm really enjoying the shrimp side of the hobby and it could be perfect for how I want things laid out :).

I'm very curious to have a look at the "bookshelf tank" 🙂 What's the name of the company?? 36" = 36 inches? And 3' = 3 feet? Henrik / Denmark

@@henrikmadsen2176 aquatop hca-12g but this format is made by the same companies' that make the 8g and 12g cube tanks - it APPEARS that they are often the same company with slightly different names in different regions? Or they're just following a template?

@@henrikmadsen2176 it seems "lifegard aquatics" sells the same shapes on Amazon here in Canada too, but the aquatop are much cheaper. I suspect the added cost is due to increased Amazon shipping expenses as they gave "free shipping"
