Merci Mark et Pierre-Benoît, what about ''comme-ci comme-ca''...is this used or just an anglicised french saying?

Very enjoyable - thanks fellas. I was interested in the response"dur dur." I was born in South Wales and, although I moved to England at age 3, have been very used to being around Welsh relatives all my life. One thing you hear a lot down there is the expression "duw duw", which is a general sort of "well, well", perhaps accompanied by an actual or an imagined shaking of the head in slight disbelief. I wonder if this might be derived from "dur dur", though it could also be a corrupted version of "dieu dieu" I suppose.

Can we add "Pas bien" to the not too good category?
@coffeebreaklanguages
@coffeebreaklanguages 3 года назад
Salut ! The phrase "pas bien" can be used, but would probably trigger a further question(s) such as: "Ah bon ? … Pourquoi ? … Qu’est-ce qui ne va pas ?". Hope this helps!

A long time ago, I think I read the expression “Ça boulotte.” but have forgotten if it is right and whether it is low or middle.

Two ways I heard you can respond: "ca va!" and "va" Is that sufficient? (at least in Montreal?) I'm new and had someone tell me it was okay
@coffeebreaklanguages
@coffeebreaklanguages 3 года назад
Salut ! Answering "ça va" is definitely sufficient, however "va" by itself is not enough, and could lead to a bit of confusion. Hope this helps!

When you say "pas mal" what exactly do you mean?
@coffeebreaklanguages
@coffeebreaklanguages 3 года назад
Salut, Dan ! "Pas mal" literally means "not bad", so it means that you're feeling okay, but you could be better. Hope this helps!

What about, “je suis formidable”
@coffeebreaklanguages
@coffeebreaklanguages 3 года назад
Salut ! The phrases "je suis formidable" or "je me sens formidable" cannot be used to express how you’re feeling. The phrases are grammatically correct and can technically be used, but they would mean “I'm amazing” (as in "I am an amazing person"), so would perhaps only be used or in a sarcastic or "jokey" way. This being said, the single word "formidable !" as a reply to the question "tu vas bien ?" could be used in daily / low register conversation. Hope this helps!

J'ai la pêche/patate/ frite must be local to France only, because in Québec, we will have no idea what you are saying. So, use those 3 in France, but not in Québec.

Some famous polyglot mentions if you learn 625 words, and lists them, it is all you need for a firm foundation of learning in that new language.That one can get by well in that country, by learning those 625 words. And he lists them. Pertaining to French:do you agree with that list? Also, within France there are also accents/dialects-which province/city has the most sought after accent/dialect?(Is it, predictably, Paris?😎)
@coffeebreaklanguages
@coffeebreaklanguages 3 года назад
Hello there! Thank you for your comment. We'd definitely agree that it's a good strategy to build up a 'bank' in your memory of some of the most common words in the language you're learning, but pairing this vocabulary with a solid foundation of grammar will help you go even further! In terms of your question about French accents, it has been said that the 'clearest' form of French is spoken around the Tours/Loire area. Certain Parisian accents are sometimes seen as being a little 'posh', but it very much depends on the specific region and the individual. We hope this helps answer your question!

So if I go to Paris and someone asks me « ça va? » and I reply « j’ai la pêche! », I won’t look like a crazy person saying crazy things?! 😂

Not at all! While "avoir la pêche" is slightly more colloquial than some of the more standard responses to the question "ça va ?", people will definitely understand what you mean 😊
