I do agree with you. But it's a pain if your a crafter & stain your finger nails & hands with ink, they look awful but takes a few days to wash off permanent inks. Also I was getting some frozen fruit out with my clean hands as I just wanted the smaller pieces & my fingers & nails have been stained for days! 🙄😁🥰
Haha, I liked especially the tip recommending cutting off things like belt loops, strings for the hangers.... I always have done that. Thanks for the entertaining video, Deirdre. Greetings from Germany
I have some difficulties with socks, because I always wear them (except in the summer) because I am always cold, but they don't look nice with some shoes. Can you make a video about this topic?
Great tips. I think you are so right in saying our generation are more caring in how we look after our clothes and like them to look clean, ironed and polished. One of my daughters doesn't know what an iron is!!!! Drives me insane lol
I always wear skin toned underwear under lighter coloured clothes especially under white. Wearing black under black or navy clothes works well too. Loved this video. Very informative .
Hi, enjoy your videos... Here is a suggestion for wearing sheer or white garments and avoiding underwear showing. Always wear flesh or beige colors. Even under white, as white will show thru... Take care, Mary
Rubber gloves are also useful on carpets to pick up hair. My daughter always dried her long hair at the same mirror leaving long hair on the carpet that got tangled up in the vacuum cleaner 😬. Rubber gloves worked a treat.
With regard to bra straps showing I totally agree. But also why do some women insist on wearing black or highly coloured bras under light coloured clothing. Just looks so messy. Much easier just to have black ( or dark coloured) and nude colour bras and preferably smooth so that your clothes fit and fall nicely.
I agree with all your points. Regarding the fading colour (especially in Jeans), I buy textile colour and re-dye them in the washing machine. I even dyed a silk dress that had a spot on it. Now, it looks perfect again. On the same note, I buy leather dye to touch up scuffed places on my shoes and handbags; that certainly extends their lifetime.
No! No bra straps showing in the over 50 crowd please. It lacks sophistication. Wear a flesh toned bra under a white top; it won’t show through as much as a white bra.
I hate tags and labels! Why would a company put a dark label on white or sheer tops and blouses??? I cut them out also because they bother me because they are scratchy. The down side is that I lose the washing instructions.
Hi Deirdre!! Great tips! I especially like keeping whites white or replacing them. Nothing looks worse than a grey tee or shirt and even worse - underarm stains! Have a great week!!
Talking about belts reminded me of myself when I lost weight ,I noticed my leather belt holes were stretched out and looked terrible. Nothing else to do but, toss😂
I absolutely LOVE your content!! I swear by using a steamer but to keep the clothes smelling fresh in between washes, I add scented ironing water. I also make a habit of affixing tags to the hangers so that I always have the care instructions handy.
Thanks for your always-interesting video posts! I find that at almost 74, I rather prefer looking fresh for my age, instead of modern or YOUNG! Inside my head (apologies for my body screaming so loudly with hysterical laughter!) I am still 37-ish, but I have absolutely no desire (or the money) to look young or wear trends. I am in a creative freelance job, so need to look "smart casual" (for want of a better description) - in other words, pulled together and stylish, without formality. When a client comes to consult with me, I need to look intentionally put together, yet effortless, otherwise they might believe my work is as shoddy as my outfits! I need to always, get up, make up and turn up, because no two days are a like......and I love it it!!!
I hate labels because they irritate my skin. I try to leave them on nowadays because I sell a lot of clothes as I keep losing weight, but they can drive me nuts. Hanging loops I always cut out, they’re only necessary for one-shoulder or strapless items, which I don’t wear.
Good advice. I also do 'the scrunch test' before I buy blouses or dresses to see how easily they crease in my hand before buying as you say except for linen, any dress or blouses that easily crease can look very scruffy after a short time of wearing. ❤
For white tees and such that aren't so white anymore I'd suggest either OxiClean (oxygen bleach) or use Borax (20 Mule Team Borax) the old school laundry additive.
@@rosej9686 Add 1/2 c of borax to the wash along w/ regular laundry detergent, use 3/4 c for large capacity & front loading machines. OxiClean powdered additive has a scoop inside to add alongside the detergent. Hot water (hate using it) does make white clothes brighter. My mother in law always used hot water on white socks, undies and t-shirts and it did work. For every day washes I just use the liquid Persil that has Oxiclean built in. Hope this helps Rose.
BIZ laundry powder would also work. A friend soaked an antique wedding dress in Biz & cold water for 3 days to get the yellow out without shrinking the dress. It's also a laundry additive.
Just before watching your video I was googling steamers! Couldn’t find one small enough but your’s is perfect! I don’t suppose you have a link to it by any chance??? Love your videos - thank you!
I love this channel so much and appreciate all the tips and tricks you give. Your positive personality is refreshing in the times we’re living in. Thank you ❤️
I am binge watching to catch up on all your great content! Thank you so much! Love your style and content. BtW, I think that your orange top looks ombré to me, so I’d definitely keep it! ❤ Suzanne from Japan
Nippies are usually never mentioned. I buy the extra large, I have full size C breast and they work. When you wear the extra large you can’t see the shape under your garment.
Try soaking you whites in oxiclean before throwing out. I’ve soaked things for 3-4 or even 5 days and they looked brand new after rinsing and drying. If you were just going to throw away or donate you have nothing to lose.
Great video! I’m not sure a one piece bathing suit would be practical with slacks only because it sounds challenging when considering a visit to the restroom. Otherwise your ideas are always spot on ! Thank you!
My pet peeve is shoes without socks or stockings. You can really ruin your shoes by putting them on bare feet. Because your feet sweat, slide around in your shoes with the end result being that your shoes are now malformed & stink from your sweaty feet. Not to mention your feet get blisters that way too. I know this is a popular trend for both men & women but it’s just not practical. Socks & stockings wick away moisture.
Excellent point about context making all the difference in whether a look works or not! I'd also add that often the dryer does more damage to clothes than the washing machine, so if you do need to wash something, air-dry it instead (and, of course, anything knit should be dried flat). That's made a big difference for my jeans.
I think I do most of these tips, especially labels and those bits of ribbon in tops . I often see ladies with the ribbon hanging out and I think please pock it back, another thing I don’t like to see is someone in a to tight fitting dress just get a bigger size! 😊
I totally agree about labels and strings. Some labels are difficult to remove and I'm a bit clumsy, so I am always VERY careful 😂 Loved the video as usual Deirdre ❤
Velvet hangers are great for most tops and dresses and I use skirt hangers for skirts and trousers (hung, folded at the center crease, by the hems). I iron all my woven linens and cottons well, but then don’t worry about the wear-creases. (I steam other fabrics, generally). It’s easier to keep whites white, with oxygen bleach and/or bluing, than to restore dingy ones. I wash and dry clean my clothes a lot less frequently than I used to, they just don’t need it, my Grandma taught me, and my Mom, that.
Speaking of underwear, I would never get dressed without a camisole. Specially in Winter. But I guess not many people do that. Also loved seeing your video. I always cut off labels and strings.
Hi Deirdre, enjoyed this video very much. I don't iron very often as I tumble dry clothes but recently I bought some new M&S jeans which actually have a stitched seam front and back (their cigarette jeans and some slim bootcut jeans) such a revolution!!!! I really thought I would have to get the iron out! Maralyn xx
Hi Deirdre, I ordered the bras from Amazon in white black and nude that you suggested in a previous video as well as this video. I love them and wear them daily. I'm about to order an extra set. Ty so much for suggesting them. Love your videos. Hello from North Miami Beach.
Visible bra straps (and VPLs) aren’t elegant, so they’ve always been a No for me. I always wear seamless, no-show bras and undies, in only two colors - black for under darks (of which I don’t wear a lot) and a well-matched nude for everything else. I love Lily Silk’s seamless, metal-free pull-on silk and Spandex bras, but they give only the lightest support and I’m really pushing the size limit (“One-Size”) at a 34D. They’re great for at home, though, super-comfy.
Yes and definitely yes to the belt loop placement dilemma! I recently bought a jacket online and after trying it on, I found the belt loops were just under my rib cage and felt very weird--sooooo, just as you suggested I will cut them off!
Trust me Dierdre.... No one thinks you're skanky ! 😂 Great advice... And I HATE tags. I have a little sewing item called a seam ripper to very carefully cut the threads that labels are sewn on with (when possible). It's the first thing I do, otherwise I would be itchy all day! 😉 Lots of love back to you 💖
Yes, totally agree with everthing, Ive cut all tags off for years, on scarfs, those awful shoulder & belt loops, they really irritate my skin, my famiy wont let me near their clothes as I have such a strong urge to cut thier tags off 🤭 so glad to hear that others do the same, Ive done the same with belt loops too, as Im sort wasted & as you say on some clothes its under the bust ugh! To whiten my clothes & it also give the washing machine a clean, Soda Crystals. Also put my empty washing machine on the cleaning cycle & pour into the washing power & the 3rd little draw & it works wonders my machine smalls lovely & clean, Ive used Soda Crystals for years an old remedy, but a good one for cleaning all your drains, I put it down all my sinks & the toilet every now & again works wonders also very cheap. Thank you Deirdre, hope many other see this as its very good advice 💖
Oh forgot to add, I always wash my clothes inside out too, on 30 degrees, all but towels & some bed linen on 60 degrees, even some things that say dry clean, if there made of a material that you know you normally wash in the machine, then I wash it always on 30 degrees, & they always turn out absolutely fine, might have to reshape if it's a Jacket. It's an invaluable platform isnt it, we can all share yours & others great tips & advice 💖
🎉Great tips Dierdre🎉. I never thought about washing the jeans inside out to save the color,Ty‼️. I,too, like to look put together ( no wrinkles ,fading, stretched out of shape, lint🙄🤭😯🙃). You are always neat, clean and so fashionable. Keep up the good work 🥰🤗🌷. Will check out the bra recommendation, loved your video last year on bras and the tape to keep it together.
Hi Deidre really enjoyed this video....I do own an iron and I actually iron my clothes, husbands t shirts!! and hankerchiefs!!!!..youre spot on when you say it looks so much nicer, you actually are preserving your clothes longer too as your looking after them!!! heaven forbid!!!!...one of my daughters doesnt iron much at all (much to my horror)..but my grandaughter who is 16 tomorrow she irons as I taught her how to use the iron!!! anyway great topics I love all of the tips & I have quite a few sticky rollers too!!!!....take care, loving Chanel making an appearance too!!! all the best deidre from Margaret in South Australia......
Hi, I'm new to your channel and new to fashion. I'm 59, worked in uniform all my life, love casual because of uniform, but I think I would like to look a little bit more turned out. I used to have issues with makeup too but I have discovered Laura Gellar, to my utter delight. I am now size 16 18 from a 22, I'm on slimming world for my health, plus I have a long term illness, that requires daily steroid medication. This often has to be increased, which is something else to be considered, because when the steroids increase, so does my weight. Looking forward to learning more xx
I agree with every one of these. Especially the wrinkles and the (pet) hair. I too have pets and I adore them. But I never step foot outside without first making sure I'm "de-haired". Lint rollers are in my mudroom just at the back door and they get a work out. And on the wrinkles - noooo way. I too dry-clean most of my things, but have an iron or steamer on stand-by. I bought both for my kiddo when she left for college and drilled it in her head. We talk every day and that is the first thing she says ..."Yes mom I ironed my clothes" ... Well at least I did one thing right lol.
I carry one of those rollers to get off hair in my purse because I have two dogs and a cat and I’m always checking my clothes to see if I have fur all over them. I guess it’s called a lint roller
Deirdre we hate for bra straps. I was also in the era where it was normal for having your underwear to show. We’re so glad that that for the most part we don’t do that anymore. Great ideas like always. Have a fantastic week. Hi to Scott from Mom and me Blessings Hugs Love Victoria and Barbara ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you, lovely video 🌻👍🏻💐. I will cut off all those stringy hangup things off my clothes within the next 10 Minutes, my goodness, why didnt I think of just doing this instead of fumbling around with them all the time?! Concerning fluff and fur, you and Chanelle (did I spell her name correctly?) made me smile 😸. Being cat mom of four kitties I proudly accept that my clothes are at least 15% floof no matter what I do. Have nice sunday evening, dear Deidre and Chanelle, lokking much forward to your next video! 😻
Great video, Deirdre. I really enjoyed this and the comments! Velvet hangers ROCK~! Regarding pet hair: Rubber gloves DO work. Also dryer sheets can help loosen the fur which stcks because of static. Great thinkg to pack in your luggage. I'd suggest a reusable lint brush. Amazon has them or google "alternatives to lint rollers." Lint rollers are a pain inthe you-know-what plus they're wasteful.
More great tips Deirdre . Thank you. I cut the labels off of everything. They irritate and itch me in the neck area…even if it’s an expensive brand and it would be nice to keep it in, but can’t wear it with that rough stitching. I’d put up with the fur over my clothes if I had a beautiful cat like Chanel. 🌸
My pet hates...bra straps, threads, missing buttons, labels that show and or scratch the back of my neck, unbrushed teeth. Love your videos, thank you.
I have discovered after 50+ years of being a pet owner that an old suede glove or mitten is fantastic for removing pet pair on upholstery as well as clothing. 🐶🐱🐰
I haven't watched your video yet but can't wait. You are one of my favourite ladies on here. I only joined your channel last week & have loved every video I have ever watched so far. Can you do a video on what to hang & what to fold please?💛
