@emmalarson
@emmalarson 6 месяцев назад
@@indexwell6546 having a doorman means there’s someone on the first floor who monitors who comes in & out & is at a desk. Think of it as like the person you meet when you get to a hotel. However, behind the desk there’s a room where the delivery people meet the doorman & that person receives the packages directly so they’re in a secure environment. I then retrieve anything delivered from there. So criminals are much less likely to steal from a setup like that. The stuff isn’t just sitting around & easily grabbed. The doorman gives me my package.

My old apartment had a mail room with a separate interior mail room that was full glass (super cool) and if you had a big package, you had to pick up a key at the desk to unlock the interior mail room to get the package and you had another set of keys to remove the chain on the box and every box had its own set of locks and keys (how they managed to get Amazon/fedex etc drivers to agree to chaining up packages is beyond me). The regular mail room was like one of those Amazon lockers system that took them like a year to build, and it also looks super amazing. I wish I could have lived there forever honestly 😭 but it’s apartment housing exclusively for college students

Clearly, dropping expensive items onto someone's doorstep does not count as 'delivering' it in Aus. America could learn from that idea. Throwing something onto someone's porch is not delivering it - it is leaving it unguarded and inviting its theft - ergo it is a failure of the delivery company's duty to keep the package secure. No, they will figure out what the next low hanging fruit is...this is a solvable problem, by punishing criminals, anything else just shifts the crime around. The one thing contributing to mass stolen parcels is the that the NO person delivering parcels ever rings or knocks upon delivery. They just drop and go, not bothering to alert customers inside to come get their parcel.
@coreydonohoe8121

That was a big thing during Covid. For the driver's safety they were not responsible for getting signature confirmation. Drivers got really lazy as a result. Many didn't even bother to ring the doorbell. Some didn't even deliver the package at all. A chair I ordered from Staples was not delivered or stolen but not delivered at all. I do have have email for over 30 years now, and I use it. I track ALL parcels start to finish. Most times by the time you actually receive the "DELIVERED" notification, the parcel has already been delivered and may have been sitting outside your door for hours. Plus, once the parcel has been scanned "DELIVERED" it is determined to be DELIVERED. You have to then find some way to prove YOU did not actually get the parcel. That includes neighbor misdelveries. What is so hard for delivery services to remand their employees to knock or ring the bell!? Is their personnel delivery so lazy that it's too hard to raise their hand do it?

Those lockers are in a lot of apartment complexes out here in the pacific northwest, but large packages would just be left out in front, and if residents don't pick up their packages and Amazon/UPS run out of empty lockers, they get stacked up in front of the lockers. NY landlords could probably retrofit some basement space for parcel lockers, but that might lead to rent spikes.

Parcel lockers are gold. I live in Poland and everything started in 2009 with firm called Inpost. Their lockers changed whole delivery system here and right now they have more than 20 000 spots with their "paczkomaty" in Poland and they are expanding to other countries like France, UK, Spain and more. Other firms like DHL, DPD etc. had to make their own parcel lockers to keep up with trend. We also have something called "parcel spots". Polish 7-Eleven called "Żabka" and many small local shops are this "parcel spots" were you can pick up your packages or send something without problem. Those 2 things are super convenient and they are cuting possibility of packages being stolen drastically.

You can't have porch pirates simply by stopping leaving packages out on the porch. Over here in the Netherlands, packages are delivered personally to you. If you're not at home, your package is either left with a neighbour, brought to a pickup point (within a store usually or sometimes a post office) or offered to you again the next day. Leaving packages outside is basically unheard of over here. What's more, if a delivery person *did* leave a package outside and it gets stolen, the delivery company will have to pay for it as the sender then has a legitimate claim against them -- leaving a package outside is *not* considered as delivered over here. Also, our national mail service PostNL has lockers all over the country where you can chose to have your package deliverd to. I know DHL has some of those lockers too over here. I usually have my packages delived to an in-store PostNL pickup point in a hardware store close to me, after work I can then easily pickup my packages. :)

Not sure about the lockers but one tip is to get to know your neighborhoods and determine one who could hold your packages. Give them a tip for holding particularly valuable ones. Other options are to ask vendors to have the package held at the post office or signed for delivery. This is particularly good idea and reason to use USPS. Finally when selecting an apartment do find one which a) has a locked door to the vestibule where mail may be left and if it takes additional time such as an apartment building with a courtyard which requires one going through a corridor to get to the courtyard that is a deterrent as most package thieves want to be able to simply grab and go b) is away from busy commercial avenues. However, getting to know your neighborhoods so that you can trust one of them to watch for your package (and vice a versa) is very helpful in reducing the chance of theft along with having any packages held at the post office - especially if you are going to be away a few days.

In the Netherlands we have the same system with the lockers as you. Packages that are delivered at the door are almost never just left there except when you ask for it yourself. There is either a second delivering or the package is brought to a shop where you can collect your package yourself. In general you can (if the sender gives you this possibility) choose for: -delivery to your door -delivery to a store that has a contract with the delivering company -delivery to storage locker Problem is that the storage lockers are often full (not enough capacity is the main reason). I'm surprised that you have your packages just left in front of your doorstep. Even I myself, living in an apartment, will go apeshit when the package is just left outside in the hall. Not all neighbours are too trustworthy over here as in the States I guess ...
@piotrb4240
@piotrb4240 6 месяцев назад
Exactly the same options in Poland. The 24/7 storage lockers are almost always the top choice, to the extent that their number is beginning to be a problem ("paczkomatoza" - "parcel-omat-osis"). But from an everyday point of view, even if a locker is full, you just have to wait an extra day for the parcel to be delivered. Delivery companies would NEVER leave a parcel unattended in front of your door. I guess this is because Polish cities are chiefly urban as opposed to suburban, while the US is mainly suburban, with NYC being the anomaly. And lockers make somewhat less sense in deeply suburban and rural localities.

Apartment buildings and complexes have the package lockers, not just from Amazon, but a few other companies have also popped up. Every building in my neighborhood has an Amazon locker, and there are a few in other public places like at the nearest grocery store and 7/11.

People need to be aware and on their toes. I live in a place with no doorman, ANYONE can walk up ring ANY bell and say they are "Amazon" and be let in. This is how many things got stolen - - as neighbors we banded together and agreed DO NOT BUZZ anyone in if its not your guest.

Of course lol The thieves have no repercussions, but if you try to stop the thieves, you'll be thrown in jail for endangering the poor defenseless thieves. And god forbid that thief is a minority. Now it's a hate crime. Basically they deserve your stuff because of the decades of oppression you committed against them.

It’s bad in every med to large city and suburbs. The only way to be unaffected from the rampant crime is to live off- grid. They are too afraid of the woods! Very rural areas are also a good bet, if you can afford living there.

Up in Canada, we have a cool thing where you can get a pretend-PO box at the post office. It gets a unique number for people to address it to, and they'll just hold the packages you get and email you about them. Free of charge! :)
