Simon takes on a puzzle called Parhelion by Shinya. This sudoku has a perfect rating on Logic Masters Germany - 100% for enjoyment and 5/5 for difficulty. Is there a quicker way to solve it? Possibly. But Simon couldn't find it... Give it a try at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. In cages, digits must sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage. Clues outside the grid give the sum of the clues along the indicated diagonal. Digits can repeat along such diagonals if allowed by other rules.
PS If we manage to reach 400,000 subscribers then we'll be releasing a video where Mark and Simon answer community questions! Please email us at crackingthecryptic@gmail.com if you have a good question for them :)

I actually got the 7 in the middle in 7 minutes. Probably the fastest I've found a good break-in in a long time. I was hoping the rest of the puzzle would suddenly become easy after that, and it didn't. So then I watched Simon's video on 2x speed. Good lunch break...

Watching along, I often do get little things ahead of Simon as he's showing his work in a way viewers can understand. But I would never have engaged in this madness to find all this to begin with.
@pixllo

A better word should have been 'eventually' instead of 'already'. The painful part was the break in. And it was painful. But after that I felt it ok. At around 40:00 in Simon's solve I did a vert different thing: I did consider the possibility of 7 being in the box 9 cage but ruled it out immediately. This helped a lot and I only had an Y wing in the end (Y wings are the bane of me)

@@jaeusa160 Yeah. Both Simon and Mark are good at explaining their logic in a way that lets you get ahead of them - sometimes before they make the realization themselves, sometimes before they get to that part of their explanation. But I don't think it's at all to do with them being slow (although obviously, they'd be doing these a lot faster if they weren't talking through their logic and slowing down to explain any technique more advanced than a naked or hidden single that comes up - not a criticism, absolutely vital to make their content approachable for anyone unfamiliar with advanced techniques, especially newer viewers)

I think it's also really good for people who watch all the time too. It really drills that information into your brain. And since no two puzzles are alike it doesn't get too repetitive. It's amazing after only a couple of months of watching these videos pretty much daily, I'm catching really complicated things I didn't even know existed 6 months ago. A math error costs me about an hour of my life. Within 7 minutes, I had calculated what I thought was a BRILLIANT break-in (basically, the same thing Simon found) ... but I forgot to subtract the center cell an extra time, and spent almost another hour trying to figure out what I missed. It was only after I started watching the solve that I realized my error. *sigh* From there, I was able to finish. I still feel proud for what I do consider to be a successful solve (I did the same work as Simon, and I caught my error before getting to the point in the video that would have exposed my mistake), but that I needed my brain jogged at all prevents me from claiming full credit on this one. What a great solve and a beautiful construction by Shinya! Since you asked, I think one thing that you almost got which would have helped is that you noted that the unfilled cells in box 7 must sum to 15. What you didn't remember is that the 11 sum limits r7c2 + r8c3 to be at most 9, and so r7c3 must be 6 or 7. Also, I'm sure I'm not the only viewer who would find it completely sensible to use a notepad to keep track of sums when doing stuff like the break-in. We're all very impressed with your ability to keep this in your head, but it's not necessary! Even when doing sudoku on paper, there's the ability to write down notes, so I can't see how anyone would consider it "cheating." If anything, it would at least help us follow along with what you're doing.
@tzampini

Rangsk, I agree completely. Sudoku is a game primarily of logic, not memorization. The focus should be on the logic. Straining your brain to memorize a bunch of numbers doesn't seem germane to the game of Sudoku, at least to me. But I have to say, I've been watching this channel religiously for over 2 years. Mark and Simon are geniuses when it comes to logic deductions. I am amazed daily. Bravo, Mark and Simon.
@BigAsciiHappyStar

@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 2 года назад
@@BigAsciiHappyStar I do that, although I also have the auto-check feature enabled (mainly to catch my many typos I make on mobile), so I use the centre cell notations - otherwise it would turn the grid red with the double 2s 😂. I also agree that solving Sudoku shouldn't be a question of how good your memory is; which is why I don't really like Simon and Mark's distinction that it's not bifurcation if you can see a long "what if" chain in your head. I'll happily colour the first cell when I start a "what if" stream of thought and enter digits into the grid to visualise the consequences more easily, with the understanding I will spam the undo button at some point to get back to the original position.
@martinepstein9826
@martinepstein9826 2 года назад
Then combine that with the fact that 7 can't go in r8c9 since that forces too many 1s and 2s into row 9. That lets you place 7 in r7c9 and resolve r7c3.

A much better way is to use box 7. Do the math. See what R7C3 is. Realize that the 26 clue can't be 6767. It must be double 9 at the bottom end. @jdyerjdyer
@jdyerjdyer 2 года назад
There was a time when that break in would make me give up. I've seen this logic used in little killers though, so I knew the diagonals had to play a key role. His was much more elegant. I used algebra instead. Here, I'll past that part of my solve. It isn't too hard to follow, but it is less elegant than his, so be warned. lol I colored the Phistomefel ring green, then I colored the long diagonals purple, then where they intersected the ring I changed those cells to orange. Finally I colored all the other cells blue. Then I did a little math on these cells. green + orange = 20 + 19 + 19 + 13 purple + orange + orange = 49 + 55 + 41 + 47 green + orange = 71 purple + orange + orange = 192 blue = 405 - purple - orange - green purple = 192 - orange - orange blue = 405 - 192 + orange + orange - orange - green blue = 405 - 192 + orange - green green = 71 - orange blue = 405 - 192 + orange - 71 + orange blue = 142 + orange + orange Next I noted that the corner cages being the same as the Phistomefel ring, I could subtract those out of the blue, changing those to be black. blue less corners = 142 + orange + orange - green - orange blue less corners = 142 + orange - green Next I subtracted the small diagonals out of the blue using their totals, also changing those to be black. blue less corners less small diagonals = 142 + orange - green - 26 - 11 - 23 - 30 blue less corners less small diagonals = 52 + orange - green Now I noted that the blue cells and the orange cells left are one row and one column, so they add up to 90 counting the central cell twice. blue less corners less small diagonals + orange = 90 - R5C5 Substituting I get: 52 + orange - green + orange = 90 - R5C5 Rearranging, we get 2(orange) - green + R5C5 = 90 - 52. Substituting our old equation for green, we get: 2(orange) - 71 + orange + R5C5 = 90 - 52 3(orange) + R5C5 = 90 - 52 + 71 = 109 So if we max out the orange to be two sets of 89 pairs, we get: 3(8+9+8+9) + R5C5 = 109 3(34) + R5C5 = 109 109 - 102 = R5C5 7 = R5C5 and since R5C5 sees both pairs, 7 is the maximum it could be, so we have to make oranges an 89 pair with R5C5 a 7.

4 hours 39 minutes to complete for me. Crazy challenging puzzle, I found the break in fairly quickly when I noticed how much of the puzzle was covered with little killers and the Phistomefel ring and got the 7. Had the exact same reaction as Simon out loud and my partner was laughing at me. Amazing sudoku @Shinya

In my solve path, once I reached roughly the position Simon is in at 1:13:00, I took a closer look at box 9, and the cage therein. Specifically, I asked the question: can this cage contain a 7? If there were a 7 in that cage, it would have to be in r8c9, pushing the 9 there into r8c8. The other two digits in that cage would then have to be a 1-2 pair to make the cage total correct. However, the pair is question would both be in r9, where r9c4 is already pencilmarked as needing either a 1 or a 2. That breaks that cell, thus proving that the cage does not have a 7, but a 3. Once that's proven, it has an impact on box 1, forcing a 6 into r7c3, putting two 1's on the 11 diagonal... I don't recall exactly where I went from there, but it resulted in a 9 being forced into r6c4, using a series of smaller deductions and bypassing the large chain deduction Simon uses at that point in his solve.

The Godfather was my favourite movie. Until tonight. This was beyond epic. On the subject of solace gained from CtC: I enjoyed the solitude of lockdown early on but in later phases chronic depression with ensuing bouts of derealisation made an unwelcome comeback. CtC helped me regaining a sense of real life numerous times - not only Mark and Simon's solves, gentle humour and obvious goodheartedness, but also in no small measure the community right here in the comments. Respect, friendliness and a natural atmosphere of civility and communication with so many diverse people with good minds and good manners is a rarity, it seems, these days. On so many levels CtC is a phenomenal public service.

Hey Simon, I found this puzzle extremely difficult to break into (I think as intended with the set theory just like you did, but I took much longer to figure it out), but in the middle I think you missed a key item. When you were doing all of the diagonal forcing, there was a quite easy way to make a lot of forward progress by looking at whether or not 7 could be put into the 19 cage in box 9. If it was, it would force the cage to be 1279, which would then force the top row of the box to be 5-4-3 in precisely that order. due to the 3-4 pair in c7 above it and the constraint on the 23 diagonal. It would also force r9c4 to be a 2, as both box 7 and 9 have a 1 in r89. This now forces a 1 into r7c1, forces the two other cells on the 11 diagonal in box 7 to add to 8, and forces a 2-7 pair in r7c23, which is broken, as r8c3 can be neither a 6 nor a 1 to add to the required 8 for the 11 diagonal. Therefore, r7c9 must be a 7, forcing 3 into the 19 cage along with the 9, and the only two available digits to add to the remaining 7 needed are 2 and 5, allowing you to complete the top row of box 9. From there, you can force box 7, which will then force box 1, and the 11, 26, and 23 diagonals are all forced as well. From there, there is still work to be done, but it becomes a much easier solve without needing to keep track of 4 diagonals in your head. :D I still enjoyed your rendition though!

That was excellent (the puzzle, not the solve). My break-in, which was somewhat telegraphed, was identical to Simon's. I didn't have any of Simon's problems, at least not until the very end, when I seemed to have a deadly pattern, although that was resolved fairly easily. At 48:40, the cage in box 9 is way more powerful than Simon realises. It can't contain 7, because that would put a 12 pair on R9, making R9C4 impossible. Therefore the 7 is in R7C9. This also means the cage contains 3, and the rest can only be 25, with 1 in R7C7. This has an impact around the grid, taking degrees of freedom away from the arrows quite quickly. Because the white cells in box 7 add up to 8 or 9, R7C3 is a 6 or 7, but we've just placed the 7 in R7, so it can only be 6. This means the white cells on the 11 diagonal in box 7 now add up to 9, so the ends of the diagonal are both 1s, placing the 1 in box 7. The 6 rules out Simon's beloved 6767 option for the 26 diagonal, so it must have a 9 on it, which means it has two 9s on it. From there, it's pretty routine sudoku, not trivial, but nothing like the 40 minutes it took Simon from here. Just to be clear, in the following, I'm not trying to brow-beat Simon, or disrespect him. I'm trying to show him where he can make big improvements in his solves very easily, and help avoid all this "I'm sorry if you're seeing something I'm not" malarkey. A beneficial effect for me would be that my liver might recover from the "sorry" drinking game. I think Simon's problems were twofold. The first boiled down to having decent intuition, but not pursuing his hunches hard enough. Simply totting up the maximums on diagonals was not good enough here. It was necessary to check what the effect of using those maximum values would be elsewhere. In many cases, the options were much more limited than would appear at first. This of course was down to the skill of the setter, but Simon's urge to look elsewhere unless he sees obvious low-hanging fruit was his undoing. The other problem, an old one, is not properly following up on his last deduction/placement. Take the above as an example. When he placed the 7 on R9, he properly followed up by eliminating 7 from R9C9, but he never even checked for the effect of this elimination. This secondary effect of the placement of 7 was an absolutely crucial change, because it meant that 7 could no longer go in the cage, and had so many consequences that he could have easily sliced 30 minutes off his time. I've seen this failure to check the impact of a secondary effect so many times, and keep commenting on it. Deduction A leads to deduction B, which leads to deduction C. Simon usually spots B, but almost never even checks for C. I can imagine a setter like Shye using this to train Simon. She is good at devising puzzles that demonstrate specific techniques. If she were to arrange for all the major breakthroughs to be secondary effects of a placement, and where the solve is incredibly hard if they are not checked, this could be used to train Simon in the art of following the path.

I have to say it is kinda fun watching the smoke come out of your ears as you do these horrendous puzzles. I've noticed a simpler way to rule out r6c2 from being 9 when around 44:50. Using the 11 diagonal and the sum of box 7, you can limit r7c3 to a 6|7 pair. If r6c2 becomes 9, the 26 diagonal is forced to place a 6 in r2c3, and the 7 in r6 is forced into r6c3. Now there are both a 6 and 7 in c3, preventing r7c3 from having any value.

This one took me multiple days but it was so rewarding that eventually I managed to solve it. But only thanks to all the things I learned from CtC! Otherwise I'd have never heard of set theory and its uses.

Absolutely right Simon. It very much helps me. I love watching Sudoku, but it's also so relaxing. and Danny is right, when you do it, it really is like when Bob Ross would paint. It's just a soothing time on the video, and you voice is like how his was, just relaxing. And it's one of the reasons I became a Patron

This channel really helps me fall asleep sometimes. It's a shame, because I miss half of the solve, but sleep is way more important

Enjoyed watching you solve the puzzle. I do like the fact that you explained the Phistomefel Ring with the completed puzzle, that helps illustrate the truth behind the "theory".

The way you say that it helps people with anxiety and insomnia and I’m having an anxiety attack at 2am and watching this as a coping mechanism is kinda funny; love your content and it is genuinely so helpful with mental health Also helps me stimulate my brain a lot and I love how you problem solve!!

I just started doing Sudoku as a result of CTC. I tend to mark my progress by how much longer I take than Simon to finish them. No chance I'm going to attempt a puzzle that took him 90 minutes

Welcome aboard! Yes, most of us simply watch a master at work with these ones rather than attempt them. This is definitely a cheese and wine puzzle!

Sometimes I select puzzles based on the length of the video. xD
