I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. A spinnerbait is one of those baits that you can fish so many ways. To me, it's very much like a jig and I tend to fish them that way. Try this retrieve - slow roll it for a few cranks, then give it a quick couple of pops followed by a couple of quick cranks before back to slow rolling at again. Alternate all of that back and forth randomly. I've caught so many fish along grass lines and lay downs by doing that.

Good stuff for sure. I blame Jimmy Houston for the straight retrieve. He had that intro song on his fishing show.... 'Chunking and a-winding.... dreamin of finding an ole big mouth lying by a holllow log'.... Just kiddin about blaming J.H. thanks for the vid

Thanks again Matt. Try pulling to the surface and slow roll down repeat as needed. You will notice they all hit either on the way up or the way down on a given day. Usually down .

First off great video!! Growing soo fast this channel!!!! But I figured this out on my own when I caught 2 on a straight retrieve and next 20 mins nothing. I figured since I caught 2 it would be a pattern so I changed out the retrieve like a square bill and boom got my limit next 10 mins love a spinner bait bite especially when they choke it!!!

Tough question. I’ll kind of bite first but have to go with 2. One spinning and one casting. I’ll take my NRX+ 852C JWR and my Shimano Aldebaran for casting (Largemouth) and my NRX+ 901 S with my Shimano Stella spinning reel which is now discontinued. If anyone has any Stella spinning reels for sale let me know. I’m not a fan of the looks of the new Stella.

My favorite rod/reel is also my cheapest. A kastking zephyr with 6lb flouro stuck onto a 6.5ft basspro shops cranking stick. I use it for weightless worms and small swimbaits, casts a darn mile and it's so cheap I don't have to worry about it at all

@@fishaholic122 Agree. High end, quality. Sensitivity, light, strong and a great drag system that casts very well. The rod and reel allow you to use smaller diameter lines that help in clear water for bites, feel, and action.

I've been trying to fish spinners more often and while looking for nicer spinners i found place that makes some nice baits called Taylor man's custom lures and pretty impressed with thier jigs, spinners and bladed baits, very well made, nice paint job and skirts.. they also have some crazy blade options with upto 7 willows or Colorado blades..

I was on a good spinnerbait bite earlier this year straight retrieving it for the most part, but when I started sweeping/pumping the rod like you do I started getting twice as many bites, especially around cover

Hey Matt I have an idea…go down to the river for a scent test!!! Rig up about 5 exact lures ,lines , etc. setups… And try no scent and four with different scents…..and keep rotating all setups until you catch something!!!!!! Let’s do it!!!! And

Aw man, I do great on spinnerbaits- I'll have to fish it right now& see if I can't get bit more! Seriously though, like retreive#1- i sort of " change direction" on the bait to get that flare effect; I actually try to burn+wake the blades without blowin' em out-works great for me. I'll blow it out once or twice doin' that& see what hits.

Matt I enjoy your content. That being said, please stop using made up stats in your video intros. For instance this video could have been "Retrieves that will get more bites on a spinnerbait" It's just a a better way to get your point across without being demeaning. I don't think that's your intent. Your better than that.

@@MattStefanFishing I didn't say that I didn't like the videos. I just believe you could do better with the titles. I could say that it's 70% that don't know these retrieves. There's no stats to substantiate that number either. Keep up the good videos on retrieves. I guarantee I'm not trying to be contrary, just the opposite. I'm giving you my thoughts on how those type of titles strike me.

Can't wait to try that first retrieve! I do the other 2 , but use straight instead of first one. The bottom retrieve i use in cold water and at night. I gotta try it during day. Thanks. I usually use spinnerbait more with wind. On the bottom, is it being windy as important?

Use a single colorado blade and fish it like a buzz bait. Makes a really great gurgling sound. I have caught a ton of fish over grass and points doing this.

Movement, that's why my spinnerbaits work well. They are built with automatic movements. It is the highest level.

Great tips. Other than slow rolling a spinner bait on the bottom I use these techniques on every horizontal bait I fish. Maybe a video on how to sharpen hooks would be advantageous for many people as spinnerbait hooks aren't as good or as sharp as the single hooks we buy these days

Right on brother! My philosophy with a spinner bait is add action to it as it doesn't have a lot on its own. Bling is one thing but put it in their face and kill it or rip it away that the deal!
