One major mistake that most make, when shooting direct flash photos, is how they go about taking the photos! This video will change that with one idea. Hint: it's all about flash positioning!
AND make sure to leave your comments below about all of your direct flash photos! Have you done these before, or did you stumble upon this idea recently?

I saw you for the first time and dude, you're awesome! I've been planning to design a set for the 90's kids and make photos reminiscent of the typical 90s living room. Now you gave me an idea that just softboxes and bounced flash will make it look like a studio set which is unreal for the theme but if I add direct flash, it will make them look more like real 90s photos taken by a point and shoot. Do you have any ideas on how to get the consumer film look in post, without buying presets? Besides grain, what key adjustments should I make? Thanks!
@patcormick
@patcormick 2 года назад
Definitely add a bit of grain (I know you said besides it, but you want a little, but don’t overdo do it bc digital grain isn’t quite similar enough to film).. also add some green tinting to your shadows… reduce contrast by a good bit… I do have a older video where I did a landscape photo with this style you could check out too! It’s not my best video work but it definitely could be useful for some ideas! Thanks so much for the great comment and questions!

good tip. what are some tips for getting this same look but wider and kind of "lighting up the whole room" in a similar manner? I've experimented with using my neewer strobe bare bulb with just non diffused silver dish and its not getting as wide as i'd like.
@patcormick
@patcormick Год назад
Hmm… so the wider you go the more power you’ll have to push to keep it bright (if that’s what you’re going for)… so you’ll probably want a wide modifier.. I have a video with a dish that might work depending on how wide you’re going… or a lantern would do 360 coverage… but again you’ll need something strong to push light that far and keep it bright

Gotta give props to the OG of the look Terry Richardson

You absolutely don't gotta give props to Terry Richardson. If anything he might be a reason to avoid using this look.
@jasonbodden8816
@jasonbodden8816 8 месяцев назад
@@superfluidity No matter what you think of Terry Richardson himself, why would one avoid this look if one likes it? Whatever Richardson may have done has nothing to do with wanting to use this lighting style.

Awesome tutorial! What picture profile settings would you recommend? I have mine on standard but should I lower the colors/contrast/sharpness to -5 instead of 0? I'm using a a7riv
@patcormick
@patcormick Год назад
I think it depends on the shot… but generally… so easy go-to adjustments to think about and see if they work with you’re photo are color and contrast. You can usually lower the contrast a tad and even bring the blacks up a bit you give it the faded look. Or you can adjust color temp and tint to give it either a warmer/cooler style or the green tint that most old film photos have.. just play with a couple of these and let me know what you come up with; make sure not to over do them or it won’t have the effect you’re looking for, these will be micro adjustments.

General, what the settings on flash? manual mode? TTL? Example social event whit low light event power flash maybe 1/64? On cámara setting 1/200 2.8? Thanks

I am not a professional but I would love to make better pictures for myself and the direct light is my favorite! What is this flash that you have? Thank you for this video!
@patcormick

That model is made by Godox and it’s the TT685c. They make a couple versions for different camera manufacturers, the C is the canon flavor. Definitely let me know if I can answer more questions!

Will It make a difference if the flash is small and sits closer to the body /lens?
