Buck called me one afternoon to come to his studio in Garden Valley. As I walk in, there sits Sklar (one of my all time musician hero’s) overdubbing a bass line. Yes, it was a great day in my life!
Music of my childhood. 2nd Chapter of Acts, Keith Green, The Imperials, etc. So awesome to see Leland still grooving along with this after all of the music he's been involved with over the years. Thank you for your part of this, Leland! This video brought back so many great memories for me.
There were so many times i thought a 2nd COA lick, section or sound reminded me of ABBA, Elton John, or some other artist and then realized that the album i was listening to had been recorded before the album it reminded me of
I saw Second Chapter of Acts a few times in the 80's. As a teenage drum student in Arkansas, I took Singer Sower in to my Drum Instructor (John Glover) to learn "Room Noise". They had just performed at Robinson Auditorium in Little Rock a few nights prior. Although Johnny Scudder did a fine job of playing bass live with the band, I was disappointed that you weren't on tour with the band. My Instructor explained that you were one of the most in demand session bassists in the world and that your schedule probably didn't allow you to tour. That was my introduction to Lee Sklar and I began following your career at that point. This video is one of my all time favorites because it brings back so many memories. On a final note, a few years ago I finally decided to get rid of my immense cassette tape collection. I held on to a handful of tapes that had sentimental value. Singer Sower was one of the few. Thank you for the incredible work you have done throughout your career. You have created a musical legacy that will outlive us all. Peace and Blessings to You. Please keep doing what you do, its value is IMMEASURABLE.
Leland, I am a lover and player of the bass. I don't know exactly what brought you to be in the studio with 2nd Chapter of Acts, but I think, I THINK, it was God's hand to bring you in contact with these genuine followers of Jesus Christ. "Singer Sower" was an absolute influence in my spiritual life with Jesus Christ, the lyrics and music drew me ever closer to the Lord. Somehow, you had a part in that, and I thank you. I pray that you find the grace, peace and forgiveness in Jesus Christ and know that He loves you, died for you, and rose again, defeating death and giving us who believe eternal life.
From my 17th birthday this has been all along my top Christian bands..now 67 almost, and still playing their records..wow..when in Heaven will ask them again to worship with them...timeless🙏👍 Heartwarming greetings from the Netherlands..
First song I heard was I'M SO HAPPY,at about 6-7 yrs old. Been with them ever since. 57 almost now. . I remember all of you guys. Everything. Blessings and prayers ✝️🙏♥️ Love all your ministries
Thank you so much for sharing this. My sister introduced me to 2nd Chapter of Acts back in the 70's and I'm so glad that she did. What a blessing! I really enjoy your videos. Thanks!
First time I heard Matthew it was on the radio. His voice literally caused me to do a head turn. I was sold on that voice. Later attended concerts of Second Chapter of Acts and Matthew's solo concerts. To say the least, his voice piercing through the speakers was mind blowing. He is a vocal Stradivarius.
I played How the West Was One, their live triple album, all through college in the late ‘70s, in heavy rotation to live Derek & the Dominoes and Leon Live, Leon Russell’s triple album! I didn’t need a lot more records than that, you’d think. It’s been great to get to know you here on this channel. I’ve been following you career for as long as you’ve been instantly recognizable from the stage. So when you started growing your beard out. I love this group so much, all three of them.
I saw them in 1972 perform at Anderson College (Anderson University now) and they along with Keith Green made a huge influence on my life as a young Christian back then- I was 14. Thank you, Lee for sharing your memories of Second Chapter of Acts-
Excellent Story 2nd Chapter was and, is a true touchstone from my youth, and their amazing work deeply saturated and touched every aspect of my life. Along with the network of other great musicians like Phil Keaggy that they worked with and (You) Lee, they crafted timelsess music for the world to enjoy.. So grateful you were there with them during those sessions to share some history of their careers in music. what an amazing era of music from those artists Like Phil Keaggy, Kerry Livgren, 2nd chapter, Petra, etc etc. . . I was living in Heaven.
@@aandpman Great to hear that Mike. I can only say music of that caliber feeds and touches the soul, and also shines a light on all the other excellent work recorded by friends or family or other artists they worked with. Like Phill Keaggy and Matthew Ward, etc etc, so, I was very busy enjoying the music of that era. I am now 57 and I revisit those tracks often because it's timeless, and touches my soul.
I saw a 2nd chapter video the other week and think I saw Leland or his beard. Listening to Ocean Liner was a big nostalgic experience; haven't heard that song darn near 35-40 years. Back then I had no idea who Leland was but I do now. So much respect.
Love this so much! The experiences you describe are so vivid and well-told. I just sit with a cup of tea, lay back and enjoy your descriptions. I’m a big fan and listener of 2nd Chapter, Phil Keaggy, and Michael Omartian from their great days of the 70s and 80s. Michael Omartian put CCM on the map because you could feel his influence everywhere. He brought in musicians such as yourself, Toto members, Jay Graydon, and tons of others. The music was original, the writing was authentic, and the lyrics were integral. Still timeless. You were a BIG part of it. Thank you!
I had the tingles listening to this and the voices are amazing. As a Christian myself I instantly knew what I heard and it made me think of the late great Keith Green who actually had something to do with Bob Dylan recording Slow Train Coming. Keith Greens music is still played today. Seeing you enjoy the memories lit my face up Lee and today l needed it. Music has a way of linking us all together and taking us back to all sorts of memories and thankyou again for sharing memories Lee. I believe nothing beats life experiences for sharing with others and especially music. Thoughts and prayers for Ukraine and it is like a modern day David and Goliath. The monster will go. Stay safe and don’t overdo it and enjoy your day Lee.
I remember seeing them play in a church in the UK sometime in the seventies. I remember one of their tour vehicles. I think they named it the white rabbit although not sure. They were great days.
What grabbed my attention aside from their tight vocals was the cool, lively bass lines. Didn’t know you were part of that! You greatly influenced my transition to playing bass!
In the 70s, they sang at our church in Reedley California. Berry McGuire also spent many months at our church. The Agape force was very prominent at that time. God moved mightily. I still listen to 2nd Chapter of Acts Easter song to lift up Praise to our Lord.
Pretty amazing harmonies throughout. I am not sure how I missed this act throughout the years they were active? Easy to listen to! As should be expected, your extensive involvement with so many acts put you front and center on who' so many of these musicians are / were / etc. Good stuff Leland! Still with you on "the war"! Beyond not good!
Leland, thank you! A wonderful group! I got up this morning thinking of Matthew Ward, and listened to the song, "To the King." Then I found your channel, and I am familiar very with these songs, in the '70's they were my favorite group. When you mentioned Barry McGuire there is a song of Barry's where the words always come to me, and are prophetic of what is happening today. The original song was called, "Eve of Destruction," though the words I remember are from the album, "Lighten Up," with the title, "Don't Blame God." Not to get too much into politcs, yet the present Presidential Administration I consider a reflection of that song.
I have brothers and sisters and we used to sing together a bit. Our harmonies were always tight and sounded pretty good. There is truth to the genetics of harmony. Siblings sound great together. This trio is by far the best I've heard though! I've seen Matthew talk about how he listened to the radio as a kid. I have to wonder what all he listened to in order to develop the capabilities he had.
Thank you for the stories, and really appreciate the gift that everyone seems to be blessed with. This brings me to a calming place, listening to their worship songs, reminds me of my childhood, yet at the age of 60, this still is balm to my very difficult life, it is God who directed me to this channel, so I thank you for your obedience to God! Blessings! ❤
Just watched the Beaver show where Whitey dares Beaver to check out the soup bowl witch he falls into. I too watch it every day. I grew up in San Marino not far from where you live. Beautiful area. Love your videos and of course your talent. Thanks.
@@randyschiffer3265 I graduated from San Marino High in 1970. My father was a production designer in Hollywood for 69 years. And of course we have Dagwood and Blondie.
@@stevebumstead9840 69 years???? I lived all over growing up in CA (north & south) AZ, NM, PA, WVA and Texas. My Dad was in the newspaper business. I graduated in 1977. Only someone my age would know the Bumstead name. Nice to meet you Steve.
Good day Leland and everyone. Leland , just announced James Taylor July 1,2022 at the Dunkin Donut center. If you wanna come I will buy you the ticket. Thanks for what you continue to do for all of us. You make everyday lighter and more enjoyable.
I find it interesting, watching you with your eyes closed, grooving to the music. I know you aren't really listening to the music but actually reliving that time in that studio, watching the other musicians. I didn't know you played with Kerry Livgren as what an incredible honor that would be. One of my favorite composers, as his work in Kansas was incredible, along with Bob Hartman from Petra. My favorites! Anyway, great video!!!
First time post. Love all your videos Lee, but this one touched me in so many ways. Had no idea how good 2nd Chapter of Acts was. Really excellent recordings, and awesome harmonies, and instrumentals.. Wow. And all the stories leading up to the music. Love how you always credit, and acknowledge all the players. Kind of caught me off guard when you mentioned Jack Kelly as the drummer. He is a good friend of my brother's, and actually gave me my first couple of drum lessons. lol My drum career came to a halt there, having my drum set up in my bedroom. Between my parents and neighbor I didn't have a chance. My wife Carol and I met you at your book signing out in the valley (Studio City) Love how you were so accessible, and so down to earth. Still looking for updates on Doug Brignole, seems like another life back at his fitness center in Pasadena. Well meant for this to be shorter, oh well.
Nice bass playing there, Leland. This if pretty sophisticated music (Ocean Liner). You said "Queen-like". I was just thinking the changes in tempo and the sudden melodic variations and tight harmonies, sounded like them. They really were great musicians. Annie, Nellie and Matthew were all self-taught with tons of natural and supernatural talent. If you haven't listened to Brian Mason's interviews of Annie, Buck and Matthew I highly recommend them.
Thanks for that, I was able to see 2nd. Chapter of acts , way back I think mid 70’s maybe , with Barry McGuire in San Bernardino, Ca. Awesome night… Thanks again…
I had never heard of them, I wasn't into the Christian music, and about a year ago I stumbled upon their Narnia concept album and , wow! I was impressed. It was almost abba-esque with prog vibes. And now I'm hooked.
I was always impressed by the bass on the records of 2nd Chapter. Maybe the reason to learn the bass. But I didn't know that you played the bass. Now I will listen with complete other ears to the records. Thanks Lee !!!
So disappointed you didn’t include “Beware My Heart”-such an amazing bass feature! I can’t tell you how many of my guitar students I played that for to entice them toward bass when they wanted to join school band, but thought bass was boring. One of them ended up with MA in music on bass and now plays with our local symphony. You’ve been a bigger influence than you can know! Oops-just found you covered that a year ago 😊
I loved early 2nd Chapter but never heard this album. Great tracks, thanks for sharing Lee. The great Phil Keaggy who toured the 2nd Chapter, is playing on most of my songs, o think you worked with him as well?
Wow, loving that Ocean Liner! I've never heard it before, but it won't be my last. So happy to learn about your CCM work Leland. I was a huge fan of whatever Brown Bannister did in the 80s. Ever work with him? BTW, Annie claims she never wrote anything, it was all "received" as she put it, and just transcribed.
"Leave it to Beaver" !? Very Cool. 😳 I watch "Gunsmoke" almost every night cuz the other 900 channels with exceptions like NPR and several others leave a lot to be desired. I think I'm Old but I celebrate what we had "in the good old days". LOL. #bassilicious
Hey, Lee and everyone! Man, you are not kidding about that piano. It can breathe. Mic placement at a distance was my go-to technique during my studio days. No pianos were ever given a colonoscopy either. Colyte makes pianos sad.
Funny story about the cattle prod (can laugh about it now) I have a little story about that..I grabbed a electric cattle fence..Knocked me about ten feet..Never did that again..
My little brother and his Eddie Haskell like friend used to love to sneak up on me with the cattle prod. Preferable over what they'd get up to with fireworks.
Regarding your closing comment today ..... It is easy and understandable to become disheartened and frustrated in this world we live in today where many of our fellow human beings have given in to conspiracies, partisan self interests, willful ignorance, lust for power, hatred that fuels violence as a means to an end and replaces love and understanding and empathy for those around us and the world for that matter. At times it tends to leave one feeling almost impotent as it relates to arriving at any viable solutions or solid answers on how to deal with the magnitude of what we face, individually and collectively! The worst part is that it is all still out there, nipping at our intellectual heals, pulling at our heartstrings. You mentioned in closing that when you play the last song you may then just say goodbye and move on to pay attention to other things ............ It feels painful! I think what you have done here, on this channel, with your open and honest review of history, your music, your outreach to others who's lives you make a positive impact on every day matters. It matters to them and it matters to you. We all feel it and I know by your own admission it has given you joy as well! You do and you have made a positive impact on people. The world is a better place for the fact you and many of the good people who visit this platform are in it! Whatever happens in the world of our tomorrows I suggest we roll together, discuss solutions, together, if and when possible hang on and collectively unify in our efforts to salvage some vestige of sanity and good will in a world that has become frayed! I love you brother for all you do and all you are! To all, I extend love and the best that life provides for you! It may fall flat in a cynical world but it is heartfelt! Be safe all ...... goodnight!
Piano colonoscopy. Classic! Memories of the episode of Black Books where Manny is playing the piano from underneath and inside the piano.🤣. I know you love all music Lee. Is there a musical genre you do not attempt? Seems to me you can play anything that requires electric bass. I've never heard this band before but I'm hearing a more conventional version of the Roches.
From back in a time when Jesus wasn’t a four letter word? Matthew Ward had some great vocals. Thanks for this, this has been a bit of a missing chapter (pun intended) of my Christian music roots. I’m going to spend more time on this now. God bless.
