Nice work. I have the KWM-2A, 51S-1 and a number of other S-Line pieces and love and use all of them. Out of 35 years using the 32S-1 and 75S-3, I have had only two issues with the transmitter, none with the receiver. A few years ago a capacitor went bad (shorted) on the screen of one of the 6U8's. I don't remember which one and recently the 2.1 KHz mechanical filter opened up on one side in the transmitter. It should read about 50 ohms DC resistance, both sides of the mechanical filter. Fortunately, I found a true NOS on Ebay. Thanks for posting and keeping this magnificent equipment running. 73 WA4QGA

LOL, real HAM radios suck on AM transmit. :-) Nice to see the LA module finally showed up. Noticed what looked like metal film resistors in the one parts bag you got. Probably fine for the Fender amp but watch them on transmitters. Accidently ordered the wrong resistors a few years ago and the working voltage rating was lower then what was in the radio. They lasted about 2 minutes and went open. No smoke, no snap crackle and pop, still looked new and just went open. Learned my lesson there, read the spec sheet first.

Not only does it suck on transmit, it also is terrible on receive. Was so happy to se the LA come in. Now I can learn a few new tricks lol. Only two resistors in that bag for the Fender, None of them for radios. More projects lined up. I agree they are no good in RF equipment. Thanks for stopping in Mike.

The Radio Shop Their usually fine in RF equipment, just need to make sure you order the proper voltage rating. I to have some studying to do with logic analyzers. Got the module that goes with my scope. Haven't had time to even plug it in and play with it yet. :-(

Don't know why but I mostly replace with CC in RF stuff. And your LA is a lot more complicated than mine is. Should be a very interesting bit of gear when you get it plugged in.

an old fella brought me one of those old nationals to revamp. i changed all the power supply caps with new ones and i was letting it warm up. rig worked ok but when i stepped away from it, pow! if i would have been looking close at it, my face would have gotten a full force electrolytic unwind. as it was, it caught my hair on fire and burned my rug. sounded like a 22 pistol going off. let them warm up but point the caps away from you and wear some kind of protection when messing with power supplies!!

I had a 3-500Z socket pin in my Drake L-4B go loose on me once; luckily they are super easy to replace and I had a couple of spare sockets to use as "parts mules". Thought I was going to have to replace the socket but luckily the spring clamp took about 30 seconds to pop out and replace and that bulb lit right back up. The loose clamp created a high resistance/high heat situation and the solder in the tube pin actually started to migrate down out from the pin. A little careful heating and addition of a little silver solder fixed that right up...lucky me!!! TNX for sharing Buddy. 73 - Dino KL0S

Those 3-500Z sockets are my favorite to repair. Glad you got them going. Now try a capacitance socket for a 350B. What a night mare lol. Thanks for sharing that story my friend.

HI Buddy, I keep a selection of good used tube sockets and "steal" a pin as needed to do that same repair. Removing all those connections to replace the entire socket can lead to broken resistor etc. Especially when they are packed in like they are in that radio. Nice job.

Always a good idea to keep some around. I do have a box of assorted pins that I bought many years ago. Along with wafer switch terminals. Like you said, so easy to break components when removing sockets. Thanks for stopping in my friend.

Great video Buddy! Nice to see these rigs continue to operate……what is the ratio of your vinegar and salt solution? Any concentration of vinegar? Thanks and 73…..Larry W4PJP
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 2 года назад
Whatever the amount of vinegar, keep adding salt until it stops dissolving. When you see crystals of salt you hit the spot.

Yes, I agree, I would keep the original sockets in it. Wow, thanks for the good tip about cleaning those octal sockets. I had never thought of pushing the socket pins out and cleaning them. Can you do that with 6 pin and 9 pin miniature tube sockets too? Excellent video Buddy. Thank you
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 7 лет назад
Most pins can be removed from the quality built sockets. Some sockets have the pins molded in and can not be removed. Thanks for watching.

Remove only the components that could be damaged from water. Watch out for phenolic material that can soak up moisture.

Buddy thanks for that socket repair tip with the pins !! I was just working on an old Tube type amp, Its a MASCO 27 that has the same problem with one or two pins on one of the 6L6 final tubes that is making intermittent contact right now, so I will tryyour tip on pin removal cleaning and repair ! The amp is a nice working amp otherwise but I had to do a total RECAP and RESISTOR replacement, ALL the resistors had drifted to TWICE the value or higher !! ---- John A Bellas KC2UVN and take it easy and feel better soon Buddy!!

Hi Buddy, Learned something new, how to remove the pins of a tube socket. Excellent info for someone who would have just replaced the socket. :-) Hope Mark will be able to assist in designing a replacement display board for the HTX-100. 73 WB3BJU

Somewhere in the shop here I have a box od tube socket pins that I ordered many years ago. So much easier to replace the pin than the socket. Most of the time cleaning covers it. Already been on the phone with Mark :) Thanks for stopping in Donald

The tube-sockets themselves look great... no burnt insulator-material that would leak or arc, that I can see from here ...

How do you make your salt/vinegar solution? What is the ratio?

Video number 40 shows how to mix it. Just keep adding salt to the vinegar until it no longer dissolves.

Hi! Your voice is sounding better and better, you are getting over your pneumonia! Thanks for looking at the Collins, I like these S line ones quite a lot. I have a few of these, I like working on them a lot! I also have a National HRO 500 that I have recapped and repaired quite extensively, It is quite a radio and I like it quite a lot. I really enjoy hearing your commentary, techniques and approach to repairing radios on your channel so if you ever get a HRO 500 in your shop I would be very happy to hear and see your approach to aligning it and any repairs you make. I have just followed the manufactures procedure but I found online a ham that carefully describes an alignment method that uses his spectrum analyzer. I also liked your repair of your HP frequency generator with the broken plastic gears you did a while ago. My gears broke also but I bought a set of replacement gears off of you tube from a fellow in India. He used CNC machining techniques to copy three of the gears in brass. They work great!
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 7 лет назад
Thanks Joe. I am feeling much better but still tire out easily. Work a little then rest a lot lol. That HRO 500 is a nice rig. There is a guy on the west coast that wants me to restore his. Just hate for him to ship it this far. You know how shipping folks are. Those 8640 videos were my first videos I done. Mine works great but has developed a few bugs in the AM and FM tone generators. Going to have to tear into it and repair. My gears were also broken but was able to glue them back together, Thanks for the comment.
