Re. “What do people have against using hand brakes?” Most people doon’t understand that using “Park” is Not enough. Put the vehicle in Neutral, apply hand-brake. When the brake holds, THEN put it in “Park”. Using “Park” alone is putting tremendous strain on the Transmission; you are essentially holding the entire weight of the vehicle on a small bolt about the size of yr thumb. Use the BRAKE because that is what it was designed to do, NOT the Transmission. You’re welcome…

For cars with automatic transmission - yes, it could be enough (although parking brake is still recommended, especially on slopes). But Auto transmissions for cars are only so prevalent in the USA.
Inside a transmission is a tiny peice of metal called a parking pawl and it can break, wear or slip. So putting the hand break on when you park reduces stress on that parking pawl making accidents like this much less likely. So he's not wrong in any capacity.
