Im at 125k miles on my d16y8 civic. I believe i have an exhaust leak or header leak, my car has exhaust particulate in the coolant ans its basically a carbon sludge. It apparently blocked up my lower rad hose, and the hose blew about 2 months ago. I replaced it, and the rad, and im planning on doing a flush. I was going to firstly use water, then run prestone coolant system cleaner, then flush it again. The prestone reccomends running it for 3 to 6 hours so id be driving around town for maybe an hour at a time, was thinking about 4hrs total. I have carbon sludge in my overflow resi. After replacing the lower hose, last week my car overheated bad out of nowhere. I let it cool and drove home, burped it and now its running fine. So im assuming its clogging. I dont think its a head gasket since my oil is clean. My theory is that my intake is sucking in exhaust fumes from my header leak. Im doimg a compression test this weekend after i do this flushing. Any opinions or thoughts on next steps? Or does my plan sound ok? I do have a new thermostat i can toss in aswell..but im convinced it was clogged.

Thanks for you question, can you send me a pic to my email under the "About" heading or post a video of the coolant in the reservoir. I need to see what this sludge looks like. I have some questions after I see what the coolant looks like.

@@HomeownerDIY awesome appreciate it. im actually pretty positive it's a premature head gasket failure now. car does run fine, no issues since i burped/unclogged it. im almost positive its a wet carbon buildup.. will send you an email tomorrow with pictures and a coolant sample picture! ty brother.

Hey great vid. I have a 2000 just like you and I just replaced thermostat, fan switch, and temp sensor and my civic is overheating now and no coolant is cycling through the top or bottom hoses. Any ideas?

Thanks for your question, sounds like you have an air lock. Have you ran the engine at operating temperature with the rad cap off? You will see bubbles. Also, what is the level in the reservoir? Might be low in coolant.

@@HomeownerDIY hey man thanks for the quick reply I really appreciate your time. I think I ran the car long enough with the fresh radiator fluid in and it appeared that bubbles stopped coming up after the car was on for awhile, but it never started circulating through the top and bottom hoses. The fluid appeared to get very hot though and the hoses were hot as well. The fluid started to slightly smoke white but my temp in the car said it was barely half way up so I turned the car off cause the fluid never circulated and I believe the radiator fan didn’t come on either despite changing the switch. I’m at a loss. Yesterday before touching any of this my temp would seldom go to 3/4 but now it’s all the way up which seems like it’s not getting circulated fluid and now I’m scared to drive it around.

@@MIkeDaBBoy Dont drive the car till you figure out the problem. Are the top and bottom rad hoses getting hot or no? The bottom is the block to rad, top is rad to block. The top should be warm but cooler than the bottom hose.

@@HomeownerDIY thanks for the heads up. Both hoses got extremely hot. Someone else said I may need to continue burping the coolant out but I’m still unsure why nothing is flowing through the hoses. The coolant got extremely hot as well when I attempted to burp the air out of the system.

@@MIkeDaBBoy The hoses are hot but no flow is going through them? Something is not making sense. Is the heater set to max? If its off coolant wont flow through the core. This is part of the bleed process. If its off you will have an air lock in the system still.

Hello. What if the upper rad hose is hot and the lower rad hose is warm. I replaced the tsat. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Tia

Thanks for your question, what is the concern that you have? Overheating? Is the temperature on the cluster going higher than half way?
@glennjubilado9115

@HomeownerDIY yes. It s overheating but not on the temperature dash. I ve replaced the upper daiator hose and 2 heater hoses already since it popped after driving 1 hour.

@@glennjubilado9115 If the temp gauge isnt going over halfway, what makes you think its overheating?
