The wiper switch on 96-00 civics are known for breaking easily. This is a very easy fix for anyone who has a couple of screwdrivers and 5-15 minutes of spare time. This will save you alot time and money doing it yourself. I highly recommend buying a brand new wiper switch over a used one. I purchased mine off of ebay for $46.

I called major used honda dealer. They said the part would be $300 and the labor $100: I knew when they said $100 labor that meant that it likely takes less then an hour to do. So I found your video here! Awesome! Thanks to your video I saved myself a bundle: I got a new part online for less then $40 and I had a chance to get the part for a few dollars at the local junk yard, but I got the new one per your explanation. Took me about 30 minutes start to finish.

Your video is spot on. After watching your video I decided to tackle this job.I like the safety tip about disconnecting the negative battery terminal. I would not have thought of that. I replaced mine in about 15min. I found a new oem replacement for my 98 DX hatch. I went to my local Honda dealership and they did a parts locator and found one across the country. @ this time there where 3 left now there are 2 New OEM's left. I thought about going to the salvage yard and picking one up for $20 but after talking to my friend who's a Honda tech. He recommended an aftermarket or new OEM if you can find one. He said the salvage yard may work however it is going to 25++ yrs old. I figured it wasn't worth my time picking this part. I've owned this car for 20yrs and always brought it to the dealership or if simple enough did it myself. Always used OEM parts. Realizing now that option my be dwindling. Thank you once again your your video!!!!

Thanks to the video the replacement went fine, but it all seems dead now. Before the wiper was stuck on and I tried the old broken switch, nothing moves now. I've checked and replaced all fuses. What else could it be? I used a new switch. I think it's more likely I'm missing something than the new switch is bad.

All went fine until I pulled out the old wand and parts snapped out. I didn't know what was what, so went to mechanic. A close up of the old and new would be useful. I was one step from doing this solo. For a woman, I am ok with that. My mechanic wasn't going to charge me, because I had all apart and one piece/step left. I then, reassembled it. I slipped him some cash for his time. Thank you for the video.

The original lasted over 20 years, how long do you think that cheap junk will last? Used Honda parts are almost always better than aftermarket.
@back-engineered
@back-engineered 4 года назад
The issue with these original switches is not necessarily the quality, it's the age. Since these cars are getting so old, the materials used to build them are also getting old. The plastic inside the switch ages which makes it brittle. After so many clicks, that plastic will give. I don't expect the cheap parts to out perform a brand new part. However, I do expect the cheap new part to out live a 20 year old plastic part. These wiper switches are notorious for going bad in the 96-00 civics. 15-20 years is great, but we have to remember that they're ALL that old now. I expect these aftermarket switches to last at least 5 years.
