Happy New Year friends and subscribers! In today's video, we work on prepping some new ground for our next round of planting small Christmas tree seedlings. We needed to measure out our planting block, and start to rip the soil to break up the clay that lies just beneath the topsoil.

When we planted corn we mounted a pipe on the front of the tractor with a chain hanging down to the ground set at the spacing we needed. I’m not telling you how to do your job, just saying that’s what we did.

Monty Bussard that what I was thinking too. That would make it a lot easier to follow the previous row.

Yes, that's what I had done previously with my tiller (this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EumWbLGwmgk.html) but I couldn't find anywhere to run the board on the front with this tractor using the supplies I had on hand. Now that I've done it both ways, the front is definitely better.

That’s a pretty ingenious measuring device haha. Sometimes the simplest ideas work the best. Love OBT too. That’s awesome you got him with the property! Happy new Year

Thanks Adam. I had previously used a stick on the front of the Kubota, and that works better - its easier to follow and keep in line with the previous row. (did that in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EumWbLGwmgk.html)

Our ground is frozen up here right now, so I am jealous you were able to get out and get some work done lol A little tip for straighter rows- get your tractor lined up where you want it at the beginning of the row. Look across the field and find a tree or object that lines up with the center of your tractor hood, and then as you drive down the row keep your hood centered on that object. It's kind of a poor mans GPS!

Yeah! I've done that before and it does work well. I wasn't thinking about it in this case, plus it would have been hard to keep up with while I was looking back at the stick. I had previously had the stick on the front of the tractor and that was easier to follow (this video using the tiller for the first time: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EumWbLGwmgk.html)

Having your row marker in front of you may help you stay straighter.

yeah, for sure. I had it on the front the previous year (before I had the subsoiler) using the tiller on the Kubota. I didn't have a good way to rig it up on the front of the blue tractor

just curios, would it be more beneficial for moisture retention to disc the entire planting area? it seems that would allow for more aeration of the clay in that area. Thanks for the videos, my wife and I are planning to start a tree farm in 2 years and your videos have defiantly opened my eyes to a few things. I have sold trees in the past but now we want to shift into farming the trees along with a few other crops. I just realized it is exactly a year to date for this video. neat!! happy new year to all of you at Woods Tree Farm.

Not sure. Discing might lead the to soil surface drying faster. Thanks for watching!

Do you only sell Christmas trees or are you in the transplanting business as well?

maybe put the board on the front of tractor to get a better feel for a straight line

Agree. I did that when I used my tiller (this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EumWbLGwmgk.html). I couldn't find anywhere on this tractor to attach it on the front using the supplies I had on hand. If I had a 10ft piece of PVC and some ratchet straps, I could get it done.

Happy New Year and the trees should do well. I too use a sub-soiler for uprooting tree remnants. Thanks for the video and I hope you get some great weather conditions for your new trees. Full-watch.

Thanks for the education. Could you please tell me where I could buy about 10 Christmas trees of 10 varieties that I could grow in upstate South Carolina for family and friends in the future? Thanks. Happy new year.
@WoodsTreeFarm

I don't know. Everywhere I've dealt with sells by the 100 or has a $200 minimum order. Arbor day foundation has a couple varieties that can be grow as Christmas trees.
