have 15 gt and 98 cobra....the s550 is a sweet platform but my 98 (lowered slightly with steeda short throw) feels smaller and raw...very analog...you feel (and hear lol) every crack and pebble on the road...has custom exhaust that sounds glorious. no mode selection...no frick'n tpms lights...no back up camera...just a raw machine. love it.
I've owned a 17gt with mods and now went to a 97 gt with mods. I agree. You cant beat that feeling of such a mechanical raw machine. My s550 was quick I guess ( I came from a 500hp mitsubishi eclipse GST) that would blow the doors off of it even on a bad day so i wasnt real impressed ( had exhaust , ford power pack " 2" and a gpod tire. It just didn't feel lightning fast to me, so it went down the road. The 97 is no fire breather at all but ive enjoyed the little improvements with all the bolt ons that i did ( slp1 exhaust, bbk intake bbk 73mm, 3" aluminum driveshaft , p.i. intake manifold swap , shifter, coils plugs wires) its more fun to me . and once that coyote started doing that crazy ticking thing after the first oil change I got rid of it.
@@anthonyhales4192 nothing better than the raw feeling of these older mustangs! And you’re right, all the little improvements feel more rewarding then having a 435hp-460hp mustang out the factory! Besides, everyone and their momma have a new mustang
I love the sn95. Multiple options to go fast. Lightweight compared to newer cars/mustangs over 500lbs compared to IRS equipped mustangs that weigh almost 3800lbs. Mine weighed 3200lbs with a/c stock. Got mine down to 2800 lbs no a/c cause I live i NY. If I lived in Florida it would still be in my my car regardless of the weight penalty. Sleek design with wide hips. Love my sn95. Previously had a twin turbo ford racing boss block mated to a t56 magnum. Never saw a set of rear tail lamps on the street. Now switching to a 4l80e to be a more street/strip friendly car. Love gapping coyote cars on the regular in my red headed step child mustang 😉
I love my 96 cobra! I’m going the all motor modular route! I will be building my 4.6 4v to rev to 8000rpm and make around 500whp on a high compression build
Good Wheel/Tire ducktail wing will change your entire preception on that car. I wasnt the biggest fan of the sn95 when they first came out but ended up with 95 cobra. It was a 347 HCI car w 04 Cobra Rims. More compliments for that car came from females then the guys tho... I dig it especially with that Coyote Swap....
I just went from an ‘88 fox body to a ‘12 coyote and I don’t see myself going back anytime soon. I had a fox ever since I was 16 and now I’m 45 and the newer platform is awesome. I do love my foxes but it was time for a change. Love the vid man, keep em coming bro👍🏽
@@billyray4716 just because he drove fox cars dont mean he had half the hp of a stock coyote. They had 225 rated stock but could get alot more without that much work. It wasnt uncommon for guys to be roaming the street in 300-500 rwhp fox bodies back in the day which are way lighter than newer stangs so that would be almost like the 700+ whp ppl are used to seeing today when you account for the difference in weight. The newer cars are a big upgrade stock vs stock and the ultimate potential is alot higher but not all fox mustangs are running around with 225 crank hp lol. Fox bodys can be fast even without ls or coyotes dropped into them beleive it or not.
I have a similar story...i had 3 1989 GTs...a 94 gt, a 95 gt with trickflow heads cam intake 10.5:1 compression built bottom end 4.10 rear etc...bolt on 97 cobra and a full bolt on 03 mach 1...all id ever had was the older cars between 89 and 03...never messed with anything newer till this year i got an 07 gt500...the s197 is a noticeable upgrade over the sn95 chassis cars but still has the raw old school feeling because solid rear etc. The tr6060 feels great with the mgw that is on it it feels like the top loader kind ive always been used to. I do love the newer cars tho. I would like to either coyote swap a new edge or get an s197 coyote car to go along with my gt500 in the future. Be cool to have a boss 302 also. Cool cars. That was a good era...has the modern badass coyote in it but has a solid rear and is much more raw than today's mustangs. My gt500 reminds me of my 97 cobra and 03 mach 1 because mod motor lol. That 5.4 4v sounds beastly. Im a big fan of the newer (for me) chassis. I like the updates but i can tell i wouldnt want it to be much more refined or updated than what it is. I want my muscle car to feel like a muscle car not a bmw.
I remember my parents buying a ‘96 Aerostar when I was a teenager and I was in the show room drooling over a white ‘96 Cobra coupe. Neighbor had one with flows and I though he was badass. Now about the only I would want from that car (stock) is the block and crank.
It makes sense if you own an older Mustang that you’re attached to but the cost to start a build like this from scratch just doesn’t make sense given how cheap S550s are.
Blue Ridge yeah you’re right. Thing is I already own a ‘19 GT so I really don’t have any reason to do it. But it was always something I wanted to do since I started getting into the “Mustang Scene”.
My first Mustang was a 98 Cobra back in 2001. Loved that car! Had some performance upgrades before I bought it and it ran wild. Still miss that car. But it is no comparison to the 14 GT or 15 GT that I had that I just traded in on the 2 2019 GT's that I have now. Brings back memories though. Cool vid.
I grew up learning to drive on the airport loop. Both my aunt and my grandmother retired as secretaries at the air traffic control tower. I got a personal tour of the facility including radar room when i was 5-6. Coolest thing ever.
I'm watching you drive this thing and you are finding all the quirks like I have on my 98 GT, the gearbox grind, the fucked up window...lol. I actually bought the 98 after I got my 15. It was gonna be a project car but it has become a transportation vehicle for family coming over to visit. It is actually in great shape for its age like this Cobra and the interior is mint as well...Maybe there would be a Coyote swap in the future! I agree with the "feels small" statement. From what I remember back then (I was an import guy) these cars were not considered small.
@@OEMPlus I actually found a steal on one about 9 months ago. Mild front structure and suspension damage, but I own a body shop, so not a big deal. Should have it on the road again in a few weeks. 78k miles and garage kept up until the accident. Paid $1400.
We see how it is!! You dropped us you bastard lol. My first stand was a 1993 Cobra, jet black with 48,000 miles on it in 1995 as I was 2nd owner. By 55k on the odometer I took the factory cobra motor out and went to town. Forged 306 with TrickFlow dome pistons, Comp Cams XE282 TrickFlow Twisted Wedge stage 3 ported heads that flowed 310 on the intake and 235 on the exhaust, TrickFlow Track Heat port matched intake, 70mm throttle body, ProM77 mass air to 36lb injectors. 255 fuel pump Pulley's, MSD, Nitrous/Compucar kit 50-225hp adjustable, Tremec TKO, 3.73 gears 33 spline axles, 26x10 Mickey Thompson ET Drags with skinnies up from for dragstrip but normally kept factory cobra wheels with Nitto drag radials 275-40-17's AC and mostly full weight 3250lbs Ran 11.73 on motor and a 150shot it ran 10.49@132 with a 1.43 60ft Launched on motor at a hard 5000-5500 RPM lol On gas, 3500 launch Never had the car tuned properly was my biggest regret and downfall besides the x wife that made me trade it for a Lexus for her!!!!! 🤬🤬🤬 But it put 406hp to the tires on motor, That was my true baby but have had Vette's, Camaro's, and had a 03 Cobra as well. Only if I knew then what I know now.
I got a 1998 mustang last year with 92000 original miles it now has 99000 I love this build I love all sn95s I’m only 18 and I’ve grown up on my own with this car
I always wanted a 98 Cobra, but even though they are "more affordable" now, they are difficult to find in good shape. I'm in TN, and a coworker managed to find a relatively nice, lower mileage and cared for 98...in Indiana. So they are out there, but you need to be ready to look patiently and have the gear/equipment to get it home and back to the condition you desire. I'm loving how clean these Coyote swaps are looking though. Thumbs up fo' sho' yo!
Being 41 I remember when these cars came out you know when 305hp was the shit lol. I'm surprised there's not more people coyote swapping these cars cuz they have an 8.8 rear end and don't way more than 3500 lb if memory serves me right.
The older cars had way more character than the new cars. You can get anything to be fast some would rather have the older car they prefer with the raw ass power. These cars can make good power with the stock engine with a rod and piston upgrade they have the teksid block and forged crank etc. Coyote swaps are also super easy...the sn and new edge are both modified fox chassis cars but make no mistake theyre alot stiffer and better put together than a fox i have had multiple cars from both platforms. 5 lug stock way better brakes i mean you can get nice 96-98 cobras cheaper than beat to hell foxes and they are a MUCH better place to start with if modding to go fast and you wanna take on today's cars. For the money theyre great cars and you dont see them every day.
I’ll say this alex those cars and the new edge feel way better then a fox body which mostly feel like rattle traps. I’ve had many of both there’s a big difference
I agree and they are better set up stock...better brakes, more stiff and better put together, 5 lug stock , better handling, can fit wide tires much easier, can do coyote swaps alot easier on 96 up mod motor cars...you can land nice 96 cobras cheaper than clapped out foxes which really makes me wonder wtf lol. Ive had both and the 97 cobra i had was way ahead of my 3 89 GTs. It was a far better car imo. Hard to beleive today you can get them cheaper than foxes.
How did you like the 347 on your 94. I have a 94 that i am about to put back on the road, i parked it with over 200 thousand on the odometer. I am thinking about the 347 stroker engine. I want reliability as i want to daily drive it with more power than the 5.0 that's in it now.
Throw some ported 01 cobra heads with ported Mach 1 lower and upper intake, use your 96 cobra intake cams, and full exhaust, add 3:73 gears with a dyno tune and you’ll eat those coyotes for breakfast
Love my 97 cobra I'll always have it.Its my first car that I bought after joining the army, also it was boosted. But only because i didn't have any credit or help trying to get a 03-04 cobra. This was in a time before the coyote lol. Wanted a 11 to 1 cr whipple or kenne bell termi lol used to so say that all the time as teen, not even in my 20s yet in the army back in the day. But now i want a boosted coyote swapped fox too.
@@YDBT4LIFE HEY ALEX I HAVE A QUESTION LOL IN YOUR OPINION WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE 96 TOO 98 COBRA MOTORS.I BOUGHT A 97 COBRA MEW BACK IN THE DAY AND I WAS RACING AND MISSED A SHIFT AND THE MOTOR EXPLODED.LOL
I’ve got a ‘97 Cobra myself. You were saying you didn’t know how to tell if it was real or not, (I know it’s a coyote swap) but you can obviously look at the engine. It would have a Cobra right on the center. If like in this case, it’s a swapped engine, you can look at the fog lights. The 96-98 Cobra’s had round fog lights. Unless they change the bumper then you would have to look at the speedometer. If they change the speedometer then you would just have to drive it lol.
I remember when sn95 Cobra's were "expensive" and Fox's were cheap. I had a 86 Notch 4cylinder white with blue gut. Car was rust free and straight as an arrow. Paid 500 bucks for it, Swapped in fuelie 302,Tremec 3550 and an 8.8 with 3.73's. Later sold it for 3500 bucks.
I was going to swap my 97 cobra but bought a 17GT instead for just a little over what a legit swap would have cost, and so happy I did😎 I loved my cobra but the S550 is just a entirely different animal!
A swapped cobra would gap it prob being 300+ lbs lighter from the rip. Also it isnt only about how much hp you got or how fast you are. These cars are nostalgic and they have a raw no nonsense feeling the s550 could only dream of having. A nicely swapped cobra would stand out next to a sea of dime a dozen s550 cars that everyone and their momma has. Im glad you like your car man enjoy it...everyone has different needs and different expectations from their car. If it is a year round daily and your only car i could kinda see s550 making more sense but if it is not your daily and you just drive it on weekends or summer or whatever the case may be and you like the old raw feeling of these cars a swapped one makes ALOT of sense. I would bet you could do it significantly less all in than buying an s550. Just sayin
Its a legit rio red 97 cobra it has stock leather rear seat and 03-04 mach1 front seats and those door panels where the window switches are known for being lose on those cars kinda like the door panel area in s197s same area the screw is to hold it and is def not ford that was the owner or previous owner. These are pretty cool cars
The sn seats are a couple inches higher up than a fox seat so it makes the goofy dash and everthing feel a little weird in comparison. Back in the day I put 98 cobra seats in my 89 lx and it felt like I was too big for the car.
Great video, but........ DID YOU SEE NATE RIDER TOOK DELIVERY OF HIS 1000HP 2020 GT500? LMAO! I seen that clickbait on my recommended videos and I laughed so hard.
How does that dude not understand why people don't like the stupid clickbait? Next video: I JUST BLEW UP MY 1500HP 2020 GT500!!!!!!!! Turns out he cracked the front splitter.
He must have a clutch quadrant because if it’s that drawn out it has to be adjustable. It’s either a T5 trans or a 3550. The 3.73 isn’t located in the transmission, it’s in the rear end.
I have a 94 cobra and I consider it an sn-95 not a fox. It sounds like it has the stock starter not the coyote. Bit of a Frankenstein setup. Also the 5sp sounds like a t-5.
It is an sn95 car they ran from 94-04...yes even 99-04 they were nicknamed new edge but are still sn95 chassis cars on the sn95 platform. They are all modified fox chassis cars many suspension parts fit 79 all the way to 04...the reason is because theyre all fox chassis cars. It has a modified fox chassis that is what an sn95 is. It isnt a "fox body" that is a nickname for 79-93 fox chassis mustangs...but it has a fox chassis...albiet a newer stiffer version of it still a fox chassis.
I've owned a 67 Fastback, 69 Mach 1, 75 mustang 2, basically a pinto but I put a 289 in mine, 91 LX 5.0 hatchback, 2010 GT, 2014 5.0, the 2010 and 2014 were track pack cars and I currently have a 98 project car waiting for a coyote.
Dude they have alot of potential...upgraded rods and pistons away from making 1000 whp reliably. I love coyotes too but im tired of everyone acting like anything ford pre coyote aint worth a shit and dont have any potential that couldnt be further from the truth.
ummm no its not lmao. slop ass suspension. a freaking GEN 1 f150 coyote motor. and im sure just by seeing this short video it has a laundry list of small shit wrong with it.
I think it's a good deal too. It's pretty solid for what it is. Supercharge it and make 700. The fact that's it's a few hundred pounds lighter than anything coming out the factory today making up to 500hp means it staying ahead of alot of Light Bolt On N/A cars.
@@chadrichards8930 these cars go for 10 grand all day long with stock engines in them. A cobra is more desirable than a normal gt just for the uniqueness alone plus better brakes and other stuff. This isnt a bad deal. This car could hurt alot of feelings na with that old gen 1 truck motor. Idk wtf that matters the compression is slightly lower but the intake manifold and intake cams are the only other thing that matters power making wise vs a mustang coyote. All you need is a cobra jet intake and l&m intake cams...2-3 grand if you shop used and this thing could be a monster smoking alot of modern cars.
I never really payed those cars any mind when I was younger but I always had a thing for the new edge mustangs and then after my close buddy bought a new edge I really fell for that car and the whole sn95 platform I think you have to buy one to understand idk I get alot of hate for having one but the few people who do like it make up for it. They weren't perfect out of the gate but they are a great starting platform to make something amazing out of. New edge basically gave it all to you
Nikko Puga I don’t like how he talks about the car at all, like so much work was put into that swap. It’s not easy to drop a 5.0 coyote into those older stangs.
Fox bodies ended in 93. Those are called SN95. In not sure if there’s another monicker like fox body, but those are not fox bodies. Many drivetrain and suspension parts were interchangeable with fox bodies.
I had a '97 Cobra that was Pearl White and saddle leather interior. I loved the car and it performed well. Problem I had was even an '07 Shelby getting smoked by Corvettes. I joined the Corvettes.
@@YDBT4LIFE I agree the hood looked great. But the 4.6 first gen 4.6 sucks.I bought a 97 cobra new off the lot with just 2 thousand miles missed one shift and the motor exploded. So I sold it and I finally got the cobra I really wanted is my vibrant red 93 cobra and I still have that car today.Yah I know the 93 cobras aren't fast but there icons from my youth and the value of the 93s especially in my 93s condition. There aren't many left all original with low miles like mine.If I wanna go fast I hop in my gt500 or my super snakes.Even my 04 Terminator is kinda fast. But in my opinion the 96 too 98 cobra motors were really weak.So many have blown motors.I even take a 94 95cobra over a 96 too 98.I love the push rod sound.
Alex thought it felt like 373 that just shows how much more long geared the t45 trans was compared to the mt82s up to the 17 model year 373 in those will feel like 430-456 on those old trans. He did it right going 430s i bet that thing is nasty. Those old cars needed gears bad stock 327 was terrible just going to 430 or 456 gears can take off half a second et or better in the quarter with the original 4.6 in which also revs to 7k stock (i know this one can do 8k now). The coyote benefits from gears too they just come with optimal gears stock because of the close geared 6 speed. 331 is like 410 used to he with the 5 speeds....355 is like 430 and the old 456 is like 373 on an 11-17 mt82 car. They dont need gears because the stock gearing is already great lol. I hate how people diss on these cars yea theyre loose feeling and way slower stock for stock but they have decent potential. Rods and pistons in the original engine with stock crank and block can take a ton of power...throw a turbo on it with the b heads and they can be nasty or you can do an coyote swap super easy on them and i also love the way those old direct mounted shifters felt. They felt much more sure when shifting much tighter. Its an old school top loader direct mount deap unlike the remote mount on the newer trans. Im going for an s197 5.0 next or maybe a boss but i know without these cars there wouldnt be a coyote. These are just as good as any other old car with just as much potential. People act like foxes are great but so are these weight isnt much different unless youre comparing to a 0 option stripper coupe. A loaded fox gt prob isnt even 200 lbs lighter than a 97 cobra. Once you start shedding weight these can get light too. I like these cars i owned a 97 for 4 years between 04-08 it was pretty cool couple bolt ons and 410s i pulled on a few lt1 6 speed fbodys and 3vs when i had mine. Still got a soft spot for em and would love to have a built coyote in one that would be sick. Get it down to 3000 lbs which isnt harder and get it putting down over 500 all motor it would be a quick sumbitch
Dude anything over a 4.10 with a 5 speed was too crazy. 1-3 is super quick, but highway speeds is too much for some. I'd never go past 4.10 with a 6 speed in a street car, you want quicker acceleration, get more HP.
@@Cobradaddy that is just not true. 96-98 cobras love to rev and dont got much bottom end. 430-456 isnt too much for those cars the way theyre geared its similar to the 11-17 mt82 6 speed with 373 gears. Its not just the number of gears its how its geared. Like the tr6060 from the gt500s they have long gearing similar to the old 5 speeds where 4th is 1:1 and the 18 up mt82d4 also has longer gearing with 4th being 1:1 as opposed to 5th on the 11-17 cars. People dont realize this. Ford themselves went aggressive with the gearing on those cars. Gearing the mt82 aggressively made 331 gears feel like 410s with the old 5 speeds and 373 was like 430-456. They didnt have to go down in the 4s because the trans itself was geares aggressively...but now with the mew mt82d4 being geared long again people need to get gearing down in the 4s again for an na car. That long gearing will work good with a blower but if youre staying na i would recommend 4.09 at the absolute mininum but would suggest lower like 430-456. You cant just use blanket statements on 5 and 6 speed cars saying you cant put such and such gears in them for the street because there is a big difference between gearing on different transmissions. The 11-17 mt82 is totally different than the 18 up mt82d4 and they should be geared differently. You cant do 430 gears in the 11-17 ones that would be way too aggressive but on the new mt82 it would feel closer to what the old ones did with 373 which was perfect for na in a high revving car. Many people would go 456 gears on 96-01 cobras and 03-04 mach 1s they had a 1:1 4th gear like the new ones do. If youre tuned and shifting at 8k you can hit about 130 or so top of 4th gear with 456s on the new mt82d4. Thats perfect for na.
@@michaelharris748 Nice data but in the real world it's too much. We're not talking about the new Mustangs, which I believe are all 6 speed now. In the SN95 world and 5 speed world, the rpms are too high on the freeway and drinks too much gas. Real world, our group back in the day, a modified Bullet 5sp with 4.10s would gets smoked by a Mach 1 stock with an X pipe, all day on the freeway. Ya, the Cobras with the 4v, excluding the 03,04s, had no bottom end, but they also didn't rev to 8k. 4v Cobras would be ideal with 4.10s for the street.
Love these sn95 cobras. Whoever owns this car deserves an ass kicking for taking off the side skirts and svt badging off the trunk lid. No side skirts makes it look like its sitting up like 4x4 and no svt badging is taking away part of the cars identity. It's a cobra be proud of it.
Not only no shirts but it isnt lowered...needs skirts on it, lowered on some better wheels than those played out r wheels and it could be sick. Not a good representation of what these can look like for sure.
@@midnight347 For sure, these sn95 mustangs look sweet as hell lowered on some 18 inch wheels. I recently bought a 98 cobra lowered on deep dish 18×10/18×9 black bullitts. Car looks awesome and gets attention everywhere I take it. Gonna have to put new wheels on it though, the ones now are pretty old and the finish on the aluminum lip is peeling.
