Amanda, for outdoor use, you could use Minwax Polyurethane. It is NOT water-based, so you would need a brush cleaner for cleanup, or mineral spirits if you have them. One coat would be sufficient, probably. It comes in the same sheens, from Clear Gloss to Matte, and the only bad part is that it shows a pale yellowish tint against bright whites. I use the Winsor Newton brush cleaner from Michael's, maybe on Amazon also, and I also found it at Hobby Lobby. The small bottle has lasted me a long time, since I just reuse it until it stops cleaning. But that would help at weatherproofing, and maybe help prevent fading. It dries fast, too. 8 ounce can of the varnish is available at Walmart, Home Depot, Amazon, for around $7.
