Episode 98. Reputation
They say this one is the real deal. In Episode 98 of Overthink, Ellie and David untangle the philosophy behind the way we compare, judge, and defend our reputations. From Machiavelli’s advice to despots looking to stay popular, to disgruntled students venting on their professors online, reputation can glide you to victory or trigger your fall from grace. Exploring concepts like the Matthew effect, the homo comparativus, and informational asymmetry, your hosts ask: Why do both Joan Jett and Jean-Jacques Rousseau refuse reputation’s fickle pleasures? Does David actually have a good work-life balance, or is everyone else hoodwinked? And, what is the place of quantified reputation in an increasingly digital world?
Overthink is a philosophy podcast hosted by your favorite new professors, Ellie Anderson (Pomona College) and David Peña-Guzmán (San Francisco State University). Check out our episodes for deep dives into concepts such as existential anxiety, empathy, and gaslighting.

On the subject of social credit scores, I think people tend to see issues with it as a form of governance than a source of reputation, especially when considering that one would not know their own scores. It is feared as a way of imposing self governance, where citizens are left with no choice but to censor themselves (to avoid ruining their own score) or police others (in hopes to improve one’s score). It is often compared to the concept of the Penopticon, where the ambiguity of the watch causes those being watched to enforce rules upon themselves. While this fear is no more than conspiracy theory right now, the combination of a social credit score, heavy handed surveillance, and strong censorship in China makes these theories a little more believable. And while it will be difficult to find proper sources on what is a highly censored event, many believe that it is the social credit score that served as a tool in the cultural genocide of a particular group of people in China. Not to sound crazy, but I have my own divisive beliefs on the subject. 🙃

I seem to recall Rousseau saying, I think it was in the Confessions, that he was whipped as a child, or in puberty, and subsequently derived enjoyment from it. Masochism and paranoia are close cousins.

I would prefer to venerate others superior traits as my own in communion.. We could afford to relax into our own in such a world where what was inherent could be acknowledged
