Why is Lead Free used?
Lead Free solder was designed to reduce the lead that ends up in the water table where our drinking water comes from. Lead makes its way there via landfills when electronic devices are no longer wanted and thrown into the trash. Some countries and State actually have Electronic Waste Laws.
In concept the idea seems valid, but in reality it actually makes the problem worse. Here's why, Lead free solder over time becomes brittle and through normal use of heating, cooling, vibration from the item being used in vehicles etc, the solder joints break down. When the item break we do one of two things; 1. Throw it in the trash which ends them up in the land fill, or 2. Repair it. It should be noted that there are other harmful chemicals in electronics that just lead.
Most people don't know how to repair them and the cost of repairing it is far more that the cost of buying a new one. So most people are forced to throw the item in the trash and buy a new one.
If the part had been assembled with lead solder that part would've broken so easily and would've ended up in a landfill for decades. When's the last time you saw an antique radio kept in a home or an old automotive radio fail from an old lead soldered joint. I have a radio from 1936 in my house and it works fine. Lead free Solder is so unreliable that it has been banned, except in specific items, from use in Military Aircraft Critical electronic devices like Flight Computers and Weapons Control Systems. In fact it's suspected to be directly involved in some aircraft crashes that have killed several people when the computer failed due to bad Lead Free solder joints.
Lead Free Solder is also the leading cause of automotive computer and automotive environmental control failures and may be linked to several deadly crashes when automotive engines shut down due to faulty Lead Free Solder joints. Items that use it are Automotive ECM's, PCM's, BCM's, ABS and TCM's. So if you want your device to work reliable for decades re-solder all your failing devices with leaded solder. Lead free solder, in "MY OPINION", is NOT good for the environment, but is good for electronic suppliers and the automotive industry. There are big bucks in replacing all those devices that will prematurely fail from normal use because of Lead Free Solder. If they really wanted to solve this problem, they should use Silver, it melts at a higher temperature, is none toxic to the water table.
Also people will want it to reclaim all that silver in it, just like the Gold in electronic IC Chips. With all that Silver in new electronics, newer broken electronic devices would become valuable replacement parts or scrap overnight. Thanks again. Keith

THANK YOU! With 4 of 7 chips flapping in the breeze, it only took two magnifying glasses and a “what have I got to lose” attitude, but with poor eyesight and shaky hands - I took the plunge - and my TC is now fully functional. Couldn’t have done it without you.

Been a busy year and hope all are healthy. I just opened up my console (finally) and found one of the little 680 resistors almost completely off. I will try to get the thing back on there without a microscope!! Looks like it had been repaired before by the previous owner. I do not have the skills or equipment that Keith Noneya has but I will give it a shot. Thanks for the video!

@@keithnoneya I ended up going with ManDigital to fix it. Great service and working like new :-) I will add that the black plastic bracket that the display screws into was loose and rattled. This may be part of the culprit of why these chips are falling out due to all the vibration. I cut up an old mouse pad and used it to shim the gaps. Nice and tight now :-) Thank you

Nice video! I repaired the display in my 2001 F350 in less than an hour. One resistor fell out and I picked out two more loose resistors with a knife. I was lucky enough to find the missing resistor stuck in the overhead console plastic so I didn't have to order any new ones! Soldered them back in and good to go. Hardest part was simply lining the little resistors up to the solder pads LOL! Thanks for the video!

Great video! I've been driving around pissed off for a year about this not working and finally decided to take the plunge. I literally blew mine off and it works now! Nothingseemed out of the ordinary, just dusty! However, I'm just curious if you know how this actually functions and what decides the mileage? Does it run off the fuel sending unit? My sending unit is messed up and shows I have a full tank until I'm down to about ½ a tank and it drops off instantly. I'm still going through my first fill up since the repair, but trying to learn more about this system.
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 3 года назад
Yes and no. The unit gets the mileage from the ECM. The ECM gets the fuel level from the sending unit and updates the display on the roof. The only thing the roof display has is the Compass and possibly the Temp sensor. Hope that helps explain it. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

Great video and it mostly repaired my dead display. The only issue now it it displays a 3mpg improved fuel economy which also extends my miles to empty. I had 3 loose resistors that I resoldered one end. Did I miss or mess up something? Or since it was dead for so long it forgot it was on a 7.3 liter and went back to a default gasoline engine?
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 5 лет назад
Hi Brant, If one side is loose you need to do both sides as the other side will have micro cracks in it. I don't think it would default to gasoline, the calculations are done by the ECM and sent to it. Also make sure the solder is only on the pads and not overflowing the sides and possible touching some other traces or components. In addition to that sometimes when soldering some small solder balls can get onto the leads of the neighboring components and short them out. Check the board for good solder flow, contamination and make sure and clean all the flux off with some alcohol. Last but not least check to make sure all the pins for the connectors and the VFD display don't have micro cracks where they go into the board. If that fails, well sorry to say but you'll need to replace it. Let me know how it goes. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 5 лет назад
Hey Brant I was going through the comments and remembered yours. Were you able to get it fixed. If so what was it. If not I got to thinking about it again. I was thinking if your ordered the wrong resistor values and put the wrong value in, that might make it read wrong. If you're not sure I can always pull my back off and measure the values with a meter, while they're still on the board, and let you know what they read so you can compare them with yours. Anyways just a thought. best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

Great video, thanks! My overhead display works great, except I can not get my compass to calibrate. Don you have any idea why?
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 6 лет назад
Hey Joe sorry I missed your question for some reason. The compass module in the overhead display is probably bad or has a bad solder connection. You could also have a magnet close to the compass like a speaker, cell phone, CB etc. If think the compass connections are bad you could also resolder the chip connections and see if that solves your problem. If neither is not the case you might as well have someone replace the chip or find a new overhead module. Hope that helps answer your question. Thanks for watching. Best Wishes n Blessings. Flying Taco? Must be a pilot, LOL If you're talking about the large rectangle thing, that's not a resistor it's a Tantalum Capacitor. They are known to short out. If it's all burned up that's most likely what happened. They are used for input power to the circuits. If you're fuse blew fast enough the rest of the electronics should be fine, if it didn't then the IC's on the board will be toast internally. There's a link in the video description for some folks who repair these overhead displays and they also sell refurbished ones as well. I don't have the schematic for the display so you might give them a call. Let them know I post their eBay business on my repair video. Hope it all works out good for you. Best Wishes & Blessings. Going to fix mine but I have a few questions. Why 1 watt resistors? Is it to last longer or is that the original size? Can I use a traditional carbon wrap (cylindrical) resistor vs the thick film flat ones? Do you recommend a maximum wattage on the soldering iron? I can dabble, have re-soldered a lot of junk electronics but have no formal training with electronics so any response about the wattage of the soldering iron would be helpful. Great instructional video.
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 4 года назад
Hi Nickel. The wattage is because for some reason it gets hot, so stick with the original 1 watt. A 30 - 40 watt iron should be enough to melt the solder. After you clean the board off with the solder flux and wick braid, make sure and put some more flux on the board as it melts and transfers the heat faster so the solder melts faster and the board doesn't overheat the pads. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

Hi Karl. The reason is the solder they use. Consumer electronics uses LEAD FREE solder. It is HIGHLY susceptible to temperature cycles, hot cold, hot cold etc. Over time the temperature cycles cause the solder joints to crack from all the expanding and contracting. LEAD FREE solder is one of the major causes of electronic failures today, and the biggest reason electronics end up in land fills. It's also the single most reason Automotive Computers ECU's, ECM's, TCM, BCM's, radios, electronic environmental control and electronic controls in vehicles etc. fail. LEAD FREE solder is so bad it's banned for aircraft electronics after it was linked to several deadly aviation accidents. So if you want your electronics to last longer when you repair your items use 60/40 or 70/30 Lead Tin solder. Hope that helps explain it. Thanks for watching. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya

Thanks, Keith. I couldn't get my big fat solder and gun in there to do a good job, so I just heated it up and it stuck. As I noted, I'm sure it will fail again. By the way, it nearly drove me insane to get both catches loose on the console cover. I could not picture in my mind what was going on or what should be going on. When I finally got it loose, it all became clear. One look at the catches let me know what I should have been doing, and that there was little risk of breaking something.

First off, great video Keith. Before I tear into my console, I was wondering if there was a fuse that is associated with this in my fuse box, and if there is any information that can direct me to the function of each wire. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Hi Courtyney, I'm not sure as I didn't have to go that far in the repair as mine was actually lit up and mostly working. It's a great question if the display doesn't even light up. I'm sure if there is. it should be in the maintenance manual. I'm at work right now so I can't look it up at this moment. If you look around the fuse boxes you may find one, if you do let me know. I would go ahead and pull it down, it's really easy! You can also use a cheap Digital Voltmeter or a mechanics power light probe to find out if it has power. Put one meter lead on the outside shell of the cigarette lighter (NOT the center one that's 12vdc) and probe each pin on the connector on the overhead display connector. If one of them show's 12v or if the mechanics light, lights up you know you have power, and it's not the fuse. Let me know if you want me to look into the fuse for you. Best wishes & Blessings. PS you have to put the truck in the run position, meaning key on, you don't have to start the truck to check for power on the connector. Hope that helps point you in the right direction. Keith

@@keithnoneya, I will try that, my truck didn't come with the over head console from the factory install, but it did come pre wired female plug behind the passenger side kick panel where the wire harness connects too. So after searching junk yards, I found the exact same console (Ford part no.) As the one in your video, $20 and the color wires match up with my wires in my truck. When I plugged it in and turn my truck to the run position, the display stayed black, put the mode/em buttons illuminated when I activated my headlights. So that's is also why I'm searching the internet for wiring diagrams to find out what wire does what.

Your project would make a great DIY project. When you figure that out you should video what you did and post it. I'm sure a lot of folks would watch it. I know I would just to know where everything hooks up. I you find out what fuse panel it goes to and it still doesn't work let me know I'll take a picture or video of mine and post it for you so you can check it for differences. Best Wishes & Blessings. My display went out and I took everything out down to the circuit board but I lost a resistor, and I have no idea where to look for a new one. Where did you get yours?
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya Год назад
Hi Luke, I put the Part Numbers and the companies where you can get them in the video description below the video. I also put a link to a company that will repair yours if you don't want to take the time to do it yourself. If using eBay make sure you check the resistor value and the Pack Type/ Size, these are SMT Package Size 2512, and the value depends on which one you're missing. eBay is cheap and quick but you'll have to do some looking in the description to ensure the value and size are correct. You can just plug the number into Digikey.com and it will pop right up. Hope that helps point you in the right direction. By all means feel free to email or comment me back if you have any questions. I monitor my channel several times a day, and email once a day. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

@@keithnoneya thanks for the reply. Iv seen a couple videos with the 680 and the 620. But also iv seen both 680 I'm not sure what was in there originally the guys who tried to fix it before me burnt it so bad. I can't see what it was. I'll just go with both 680 see how it goes lol. That way I don't have to buy both.

Can you get new or replacement resistors?
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 5 лет назад
Absolutely the part numbers and where to get them are in the description below the video. Hope the video helped. Let me know if you need anymore help. Usually there's a minimum order so you may have to order a lot to just get one but the price is really low so even if you have a lot left over it's still cheaper than ordering a new display. I do not see any cracks or something on those resistors, but would that matter what may be visible just under a bright light? Also, is any fuse linked to the computer display? Other theories: Is the power to this computer display any way related to the sliding roof window, as my sliding roof window is a mess with a separate wire coupling nearby. My Feb. 1999 Lariat overhead console is amall and just houses the buttons for the roof window and the computer display. Thanks for any tips...
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 2 года назад
Hey Carexpritch I'm not sure if they are related, but I looked through my Haynes manual and I couldn't find anything on the overhead power. But in the Haynes Manual the schematic diagrams show the power to the window motors come from fuses 25 & 29 of the Power Distribution Box. It's the fuse box in the corner up against the cab just behind the Air Filter box on the drivers side. Kinda long and skinny. The diagram of what the number of the fuse is are located on the inside of the cover. I would just check all the fuses in their. Hope that helps you find your bad fuse. Best Wishes & Blessings.
