Great video, I’ve had a farmi winch for 20 years only problem ever was replace a link in chain.. great attachment for logging small scale. Those rods on the side where you are hanging chains is a great place to hang your saw. I would always have 2 saws , one on each side. Thanks for sharing!

I'm learning alot about forestry winch use from your videos; thanks for sharing! Shopping now myself; I think the Farmi 3561P will be a perfect match for my tractor. (NH 40 HP Boomer).

Thanks, I would look at Tajfun winches too, they look like they are built solid and have more capacity pulling and cable length I believe. I was also told they are a little cheaper but I have not checked myself. No complaints about mine I have used it a lot the last 10 months and it has always got the job done. If you can swing the extra cost get a remote that would make life a whole lot easier.

What a fun machine!! I see a potential for unlimited ideas and possibilities. Just a few- pick up heavy stuff out of my pickup truck, using a tree with a snatch block, raising a framed wall when building structures. Just got mine on Friday, and learning how to use it. Thanks for sharing, god bless.

I bought mine about 3 years ago. I love it. I’m in northwest Arkansas. Nobody has heard of them here. By the way, you always put the snatch block on the item your going to pull for the stronger pull. The anchor goes on the tree. I worked in heavy recovery in the past.

This new implement makes me jealous! I'll have to build one! Lol! (that is almost a serious claim... about building one!). You seem to keep all the snow for you! Here we merely have snow on the ground. It's been cold since the beginning of November, but no big snow accumulation. It should help to have frozen forest trails. Thanks!
@backinthewoods2022
@backinthewoods2022 4 года назад
From Steel To Wood our problem is we have so much snow it is insulating the ground and the wet spots on the trails are still wet underneath the snow Kind of a big mess right now I’m sure you can build a badass winch for yourself your like the Canadian Mac Guyver 👍

@9:18 What I did was take a small size chain, cut one link in half, weld one half on that end of choker chain tail, Then get a 1/4"x 24" steel rod, tack weld a small snap chain link on one end, tack weld the other half of the small cut chain link on other end of rod, put a slight bend in the rod. Now hook the snap link into the end of choker chain tail, slide the rod under tree, use a pulp hook to grab the 24" rod in the welded chain link and with a little tug with pulp hook you can easily bring the whole choker chain under the tree.

I looked at several brands of logging winches. I found the Tajfun to be the superior design, cable length, and weight for the $. Oesco delivered it for free, 317 miles away from me. Get an Igland self releasing snatch block, a must for a logging winch, especially in tight woods. Good luck.

Sir, check out "outdoorswiththemorgans" Mike also got a winch & his machine makes you pull the logs from the bottom pulley? I think they said it was safer. If you continue to pull from the top pulley I would get a heavy blanket & throw it over the cable ( 8 feet) from the logs! If the cable broke the blanket would stop it from flying to the tractor????? Stay safe!
@backinthewoods2022
@backinthewoods2022 4 года назад
Chris 3M from my understanding the top pulley is most often used because it forces the blade of the winch into the ground creating a lot of downward force anchoring the tractor the lower pulley is used for skidding out the logs because if they catch on something while you are using the top pulley while skidding and because it would be raised of the ground you are at more of a risk for tip over. The lower pulley is also used if you have to pull on an angle which should never exceed 30 degrees because of roll over again. Check out Bombadil Tree Farms RU-vid channel he seems like he has a lot more experience than Mike or I. Thanks for watching

Kirk, thanks for inviting me to view your video. I could make many suggestions but am afraid that I would come across as being too critical. I must, however, at least beg you to outfit yourself and your tractor for safe forestry operations. No hardhat, no face screen, and no chainsaw chaps invite terrible disaster. When I was a young man employed in production logging, my hardhat once saved me from serious injury and possibly saved my life. I could write pages about close-calls, injuries and deaths that occurred to friends, acquaintances, or fellow lumberjacks. Many could have been mitigated or completely prevented by proper, functional safety equipment. The forest is a wonderful place to work but is a very unforgiving environment. Second chances don't come often. Please, please get a hardhat with face screen; some chainsaw safety chaps, pants or leggings; and outfit your tractor for safe forestry use. Attaching a winch is not enough. I encourage you to again review my Chapter 1 RU-vid video that covers safety preparations before ever entering the forest, and to download and read the appropriate chapters in "The Farm Tractor in the Forest." It is available for free download. Just Google "The Farm Tractor in the Forest." At the top of the search result list, courtesy of the Maine Forest Service, is a direct link to the pdf version of the book. By the way, what motivated Sweden's National Board of Forestry to embark on developing the logging system discussed in the book was a terrible slew of serious tractor logging accidents, many of which resulted in deaths. After developing and testing the system, they trained instructors who went throughout not only Sweden but several other countries training forest workers. Tractor logging accidents and deaths promptly plummeted. None of this is unsupported theory or senseless paranoia. It's history grounded in indisputable fact supported, among other things, by international demand that resulted in "The Farm Tractor in the Forest" getting translated into at least six languages and its principles taught to tens of thousands of woodsmen worldwide. Please excuse my lecturing, but I would feel terrible to have withheld these comments and later discover that you or one of your viewing audience had been seriously injured or killed. Be safe in the woods! Vince

Bombadil Tree Farms I total agree with you and have a hard hat with screen, and chaps. I have no good reason for not wearing them at the time of the video other than laziness. I usually do have that gear on but it only takes that one time and I would be screwed. It is something I have to work on or I should say do every time especially since I am making videos on it. I will check out that read and appreciate all advice I can get as iam a novice. I have one question about when to use the top pulley and when to use the bottom pulley as the instructions are vague. Thank you again and let me know if you have any other suggestions iam all ears.

@@backinthewoods2022 Kirk, that takes away so much of my worry and concern! I will sleep much better at night! Thank you! Concerning your winch's lower snatchblock, its purpose is to decrease the risk of rolling the tractor over when winching at an angle or when traveling around corners pulling a twitch of logs. I believe I explained and illustrated this pretty well beginning at about 27 minutes 56 seconds and ending at 30:06 in my Chapter 2 video. At one point in that sequence you will see where a log temporarily catches up on something and the entire rear of my tractor gets pulled sideways without tipping. If the winch cable was not through the lower snatchblock the tractor would have flipped over on its side assuming, of course, that I was unable to quickly disengage the winch before that happened. Running the winch cable through the lower snatchblock effectively removes what otherwise is the tall lever arm of the winch frame. Whenever possible, winch in a straight line to the tractor as you have done in your video. In that case the lower snatchblock not only offers no stability benefit but has the undesirable effect of reducing the downward bite of your winch's butt-plate. That bite into the ground serves to prevent the entire tractor from sliding backwards when winching a large load. You pointed that out well in your video. To achieve that bite, you now want to take advantage of the winch frame's tall lever arm and you do so by using only the top pulley. When yanking your twitch down the skid trail, you gain considerable stability by either switching your choker chains from the winch cable grab hooks to the slots on your winch's butt plate, something you also demonstrated well in your video, or running the winch cable through the lower snatchblock, something you also demonstrated in your video. The downside, however, is that the butts of your twitch of wood will drag on the ground which increases their risk of getting caught up on stumps or other obstructions not to mention creating more disturbance to your skid trail. These concerns are reduced by using the top pulley which lifts the butts off the ground at the expense, of course, of decreasing tractor stability when going around corners. That is one of the reasons to make skid trails as straight as possible. Winter logging using well prepared skid trails takes care of both these concerns, so the safest way is to continue doing as you have been doing with the cable running through the lower snatchblock when the tractor is yanking a load down a snow covered skid trail. Your skid tails appear very straight and wide so you might want to skid using only the top pulley when logging without snow cover. If you do, take it slow and be alert to the risk of tractor roll-over when going around corners. Hope that I explained this adequately, and I do encourage you to take a look at that two minute sequence in my Chapter 2 video. I'm sure you won't be confused about the video I'm talking about because I have produced very few, but just to make certain it's Chapter 2 of my multi-chapter video series entitled, "Logging with a Farm Tractor in the Boreal Forest of Northeastern USA." Be safe in the woods! Vince
