Is that just shaky hands or add half blind too? Yeah, at almost 70, too much coffee does hinder the steady hand. But, even if steady handed, needing +275-300 reading lenses to see 2x or 3x tippet line to tie up a #6 -#8 wooly bugger, hummm... try that on a dark night on your favorite bass or trout stream. A good headlight will certainly help. But when older eye$ start to flag, better have some younger eyes to do it for us huh? Hey grandson, want to go fishing? Hope you don't mind tying my tippets and flies. I'll teach you how to catch Wiley fish though. 😳 can you say # 12-26 dry mayfly grandson. Try one of these on for size. Hahaha

It's a variation of a "Snell Knot".. a well known knot. The knot is also used in eye-less hooks (popular in Japan) where instead of an eye, it's flattened out in an oval or circle. The line will snap *or* the hook will bend, before the knot fails. Guaranteed. That's why it's advertised on every box of loose hooks & pre-made Eagle Claw SNELLS you buy. The more difficult "lesser known" knots are when connecting actual Lures to a line, through a split ring. This Snell knot is *known* by 95% of fisherman.

@jaydee3730 2 года назад
@@raymondsweeney5410 Sometimes yes, the breaking point of lower test non-braided lines is less than the force the knot can take, but braid is a little different. It's not gonna break typically, so the knot is actually the weak point. Using the wrong knot with braid is gonna lose a lot of lures. I cant tell you how many people I've went fishing with that use clinch knots for braid...you can literally pull out the knot just by trying to tighten it after tying! Every knot serves a purpose, for a specific use, and that's the point I was trying to make :) But I whole-heartedly agree with you, if you cannot tie a decent basic knot, you dont need to be fishing.

I think 99% have come across it and have used it at one time or another, but I believe a lot more than 1% still use it. It's called the 'snell' or 'eye hook snell'. It's very commonly used in packages of leaders hooks which are commonly used with baits. IMHO it is still the best way to keep the leader in line with the shaft of an in angled eye or up angled eye hook.

I know a much simpler faster way to tie this knot. Just twist the hook and loop several time and pass the end through the loop and pull tight. I the middle of a hot streak you can replace or change flies very quickly.

That’s a snell knot. Eagle Claw sells many hooks pre-rigged with that knot.
@frogsnacks
@frogsnacks 2 года назад
This is slightly different, most snell knots like eagle claws have to be tied on a leader because the easiest method to tie it needs both tag ends, this version allows it to be tied directly to your main line with the doubled line loop. But ya it is still a snell knot.
@unclemeat7310
@unclemeat7310 2 года назад
@@frogsnacks I figured out now to tie a snell without needing both ends free. Hard to explain but you double the line and insert it through the eye from the front. You leave a big loop behind the bend of the hook. Hold the "standing" line against the hook shank an wrap the "tag" part of the loop over the shank/standing line back towards the eye. After 5-6 wraps just pull the tag and standing lines while pinching the knot. Always moisten knot before tightening. You will have a snell. This knot brings the tag end from the front of the eye to the rear before wrapping around the shank. If the hook/line get pulled hard the main line can pop the tag end over the eye and the wraps can come undone. You can see at the :37sec. mark when he makes the first wrap. Only the hook eye is holding the knot together.

The fun is in the fishing. Not the knot tying. It's importance is debatable.

Great job on slowly and clearly showing how to tie this. I've used this for about 30+ years. Great knot. Too may videos "Showing" how to tie a know are too fast and NOT shown clearly, every move.

Well demonstrated lesson 👍 I learned this knot 40+ years ago and also used the same knot - without threading through the eye for spade ended hooks only I was told to wet the line ( as a lubricant) before pulling the knot tight......... pulling the knot tight with a dry line can cause friction and can leave week/break points in the line, same for any other knots (wet before pulling tight) such as tying a weaker leader /hook line than the main line to avoid tackle loss or using swivels, wire trace lines ect.
