+Knots, knots, and length of thread are three common construction areas that provide for frustration when sewing quilters' yo yos. So, batting to the rescue!!!!
One quiet evening Stephanie hit on using left over batting to solve all three problems. The solution may seem to take time...but not when compared to starting over on a yo yo when the knot does not stay in place, or when getting ready to gather the thread and material and making another knot. The process seems to increase the number of yo yos that can be made from one span of thread.
Note: Stephanie went back to using a single strand of Coats and Clark quilting thread; it worked well when using today's nice cotton fabrics.
Many quilters would be happy to share their left over batting with you; the batting from their various projects can accumulate quickly.

Hi. Just watched your video. I have a yo-yo quilt from my great aunt that she made. I need to repair at least 20 of them. Don’t want to take it apart just repair on quilt? Am I making sense? Thought I’d iron the edges and make a new start of thread to pull it. Anyway thanks for the video showing how. Any tips?

If the material is still in sewable shape, just take new thread to join the yo-yos. If any yo-yos are falling apart, you could find material that looks very similar and add a new yo-yo. That is so nice that you have a family quilt. Good luck.

This is great! Do you somehow tuck them into the finished yo-yo and leave them in or do you cut them out after you knot the yo-yo?

After knotting, I trim the thread tails if too long. I carefully tuck the knot into the gathered fabric (use a finger nail, or a small pair of scissors (be careful with thesel).

I do cut off the batting squares used to tighten the thread.

Thank you Stephanie. I just found your site and as I am a beginner at yo yos I have questions. I found a very large yo yo top at the thrift store. I didn’t need it but dang all the time and love involved. And all those fabrics full of history. I just made 10 yo yos to complete this quilt. Your little batting squares are a brilliant idea. I bought a yo yo maker in two different sizes. I love that you can use up your scraps and it’s something I can do while listening to a book and relaxing. I’m wondering….how do I put a back on this huge amazing thing? 💕Cathy

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OH-tvSh1sRU.html That was a great thing to take away! I have a lot of videos with several ideas about yo yos . There is a play list with the videos. If you have trouble finding me put in " stephanie kitchens 4340" and you will get a nice list. I have sewn old yo yo quilts onto different tops...one was a purchased light weight comforter, another was a king size piece of fabric (video explains), But a favorite is to take a quilt (one I use came from Walmart!) turn it over so the back shows and then lay the yo yo quilt over the top. No damage to yo yo quilt in the future. It is really a labor of love to stitch the yo yo quilt to a top. Good Luck!!
