Even though it IS possible to salvage your old shackles by drilling out the old bolt and replacing it with a new 14mm shackle bolt it still takes a ton of time. So if you are doing your leaf spring replacement I WOULD recommend replacing the shackles at the same time. But... If you want to save 100 bucks, you can always do it the way i show you here in the video and it will work just fine.
As always, make sure to LIKE this video if it helped you. And don't forget to subscribe!!

I have a 96 Toyota T100 and I'm doing the leaf springs on it soon. I tried watching a couple other videos and they weren't as near as clear as yours was . Thank you so much for making the video. I realized it was 5 years ago when you made it but it worked for me today. Your awesome.

It should be nearly identical. I know this question was a while ago, but in case anyone else is wondering….. it should be pretty much identical for every Toyota pickup. They haven’t changed much in the rear suspension design for a good long while!

Glad I could help! And no, you have to buy the shackles and leaf springs separately. Getting new shackles will save you about an hour or so of work on each side.

Finally finished both springs! The ratchet strap recommendation from the other guy was a life saver! I would recommend spraying all of the nuts and bolts with WD40 several days in advance and buying either white or apple cider vinegar 5% to soak rusted parts in.

Those ratchet straps are fantastic. I used them so much when I was lifting my old jeep. They help line everything up. Rust is the worst. Good call with spraying everything down w/ lubricant.

It worked! Took me just under 12 hours. Was a marathon for sure. The bottom bolts of the shackles are knurled under the head, both of mine needed to be drilled out and one needed additional grinding. Amazing how long it held on. Grind some, beat on it, grind more, pound more. Also used heat, not sure if it helped. Thanks for your video! Very helpful.

I almost have the drivers side front leaf spring off but I am having problems with the front bolt of the leaf spring ...the nut is smashed next to the gas tank enough to where I can't get a rachet on it or get any leverage. I saw your note about the jack not working for the passenger side. Not sure if I should be worried about sparks that close to the tank if I use a cutting wheel. Did you cut that one too?

If you werent removing your leaf spring and were just putting extended shackles in how would you suggest getting the grinded off bolt out of the bushing?
@taylorc2542
@taylorc2542 6 лет назад
How does the lower shackle pin get seized to the bushing if it is meant to rotate inside the bushing? I would think the constant suspension motion would prevent that from happening, and when I did mine I kinda was thinking that the lower shackle pin must be pressed into the leaf spring at the factory, and then attached to the frame with the upper pin. Either way, I'd just buy a shackle kit and have the new bushings.

Hey, first of all very good video thank you! Just wanting to confirm, the leaf springs aren't under any tension or compression when taking them off? That is the only thing I am nervous about with replacing my leaf springs and I haven't seen any video where they say whether or not it is simply unbolt and drop down or if the spring is under tension? Thanks for any advice!
@JerryRigEverything
@JerryRigEverything 9 лет назад
Bill Capon As long as you have the truck lifted up by the truck frame so that the axle is just hanging there, they will not be under tension. If you lift up the truck by the axle so that the shocks are compressed than the springs WILL be under pressure.

Did the new springs still look like they were upside down when you lowered the truck back on the ground. I have the same truck and my leaf springs look like they are arched upside down instead of like a normal truck bowing downward.
@twatson8812
@twatson8812 7 лет назад
I am going to go to the wrecking yard and look for some better ones. Maybe off off a regular half ton. Funny thing is the truck really doesn't look like it is sitting that much lower in the back than it should. Toyota should be ashamed also seems to be a common problem on the tacomas.

did you physically have to move the axel to get the hole to line up on the eve spring? If so how?
@JerryRigEverything
@JerryRigEverything 8 лет назад
+Koren Robins I didnt have to move anything to get the axle to line up. It just naturally wants to go there. BUT if you need to, you can take tiedowns, and put them from the axle to the frame and 'ratchet' it the direction that you want it to go. I think I used that method on one of my jeep lift videos forever ago.

Parts have jumped on the leaf spring & two shackers to $310.00 Sometime it may not be worth doing the repair yourself due to the ages. Because soon the wheel bearing/struts/shocks/cv, lower control arms & so on are next.

Fucking shackle bolts! They sell ones that are greaseable, but you would think the factory would use a little grease on the bolt so shit like that won’t happen. After hassling with my front bolts for a while, decided to leave the bolt in, the springs were still good, but I broke a add a leaf spring on one side, so replaced the add a leaf with the springs still in the truck. Tried heating the bold head for a bit with a torch, but it’s solid on there won’t move, soaked it with ATF fluid. Was thinking just leaving the bolt loose with a jamb nut on top, and let the road vibrations work the bolt in the shackle loose eventually!
@thomaspelham8108
@thomaspelham8108 3 года назад
What size bolt did you use to replace the rear one you cut off?
@blkcoupequattro
@blkcoupequattro 3 года назад
@@thomaspelham8108 Never got the fronts out, they are still in there. I needed to replace the the helper spring, so just dropped the rear shackles, and replaced the leaf that was broken. In retrospect I was going to replace both spring all new, but instead just unbolted the leaf springs, and replaced both the old helper springs, a bit cheaper, but now that I think about it since the front shackle bolts would not come out, I saved myself a lot of hassle, and cost also. At some point they may need to come out, but I'll need to cut them out with a Sawzall or other.
