Hello Again, Just watched the smokebox being fitted to the boiler. Blackgates engineering have made a beautifully accurate circular smokebox, not easy when brass is rolled and silver soldered. When the smokebox to boiler ring was fitted it showed that the boiler was just as accurate. Hugely impressed with this precision when dealing with tubes and silver soldering parts to them and somehow managing to get them to remain absolutely circular. Fabulous machining skills and a lot of ingenuity to machine these rings on your quite compact lathe and machining that right pig of a casting for the smokebox door left me marvelling! What a fit! Then I thought, Chimney, blast pipes and pipes for the exhaust steam to the blastpipes, blower steam pipe, smokebox dart and locking mechanism plus all the external fittings such as the number mean there is huge amount to do. Looks to be about ready to fire up!!! They probably build lots of boilers... the fact this one bolts perfectly up to your work speaks volumes about your workmanship!
Thank you Terry. The boilermaker is a one man band - he makes boilers to order - each boiler takes weeks to produce. I think we both did our jobs right on this occasion!
@@no23mk2 I have a small CNC engraver - it has given me hours of "fun". Last time I used it, I gave up trying to use any CAD or CAM to make a simple engraved circuit board, but drove it by typing g-code line by line and then by using the jog controls to cut isolation paths by eye…
Amazing to see all the detail that's going to be hidden importantly you know its there. I will keep following your build Guy I worked with built 9f in 5" gauge they are ultimate of steam the 9 f he was also in charge of mainline 9 f rebuild at midland railway I think My Dad fired and drove 9 f's occasionally he was Immingham driver he often talked of how smooth they were at speed shame they wont let them go mainline anymore

Excellent, that boiler is fine piece of craftsmanship too. You caught your other half (or someone) in the green house outside! (I won't tell). I picked up a top tip from advanced innovations recently about cutting plate material in the horizontal bandsaw. If you tilt the piece by resting it on a packer at one side before clamping it, the blade will cut through it much more quickly. It works for me and the cut remains straight!

That is a beautiful sight. I am certain that you are more than pleased with the results of bringing these two major components together and having them fit perfectly. Clever means of mounting that boiler. One does not often think about the amount of expansion that boilers go through after being fired up. Now what about the cab/ You have plans for the smoke box and while waiting for the materials, can you progress on the cab construction? Congratulations on a job well done. It is wonderful to see your creation come together. All the effort is worth it. Let's hope progress to completion is swift and as accurate as the work so far. Thanks for the post, Craig. Thank you Robert - Sigh of relief was the order of the day! If I get stuck I'll finish the drain cock cylinder and mechanism while I can still get to where it all needs to go. Regarding the cab - that involves sheet metalwork, never done it, the thought of which scares me!!! - more art than engineering.... Cheers Craig
You could benefit from a suds pump to extend your cutter life. If your bluing the chips lower RPM and feed speed. That's a lovely job your making and I know that it takes alloy of time and dedication to complete such an involved build.
Thank you Don. I have a suds pump that I use on the lathe when I'm chasing tight tolerances. I have considered piping it up to the mill, but find for the small one off bits and pieces I do, a squeezy bottle of coolant is adequate.
Hi Craig, another major step forward, can’t wait to see that smokebox! I may have missed this in the past, but will you have a single, or double chimney and have you a chosen loco number? Again the design of the model’s boiler support is pretty much how the real one is done, except there are more bolts, clamps etc. fastening it down. They do look top heavy in that “naked” condition and the boiler really was mounted as high as they could get it within the loading gauge. Just for your interest, from cold to in steam at full pressure, the real boiler/firebox expands rearwards into the cab by about 7/8 inch in those sliding clamps, but I think the model will be around 1/16 inch....allowance has to be made for this when making the cab floor etc. to avoid interfering with pipes and things as it warms up! Can’t wait for the next instalment.... Cheers Don
Hi Don, Thank you. This loco is a double chimney. In the first instance its going to be black. I haven't chosen a number yet but it wont be a preserved 9F. I am currently researching a suitable candidate. My rough calculation gave an expansion of between 40 to 50 thou. So a 1/16" allowance sounds just right. Cheers Craig
@@no23mk2 Ok well you have several to choose from, depending on tender type as well. Mine is 92167, a former stoker fitted one but converted to normal and paired with a BR1C tender. It was allocated to Birkenhead when I was living near there and was one of only a small number allocated there with a double chimney. It was the last 9F in service....June 68. That was news to me too! So presumably the firebox and cab are fixed to the boiler and just resting in guides on the chassis too? Was the footplate rigidly attached to the cab or to the chassis?
@@no23mk2 Thanks for clarifying! Would there be much relative motion other than thermal expansion - is there a bit of flexibility in the frames? The footplate wouldn't be bouncing off the chassis at excessive speed on rough track, would it…?
@@RoamingAdhocrat Thermal expansion/contraction aside, there should be very little if any relative movement between boiler and frames. The frames are very rigidly built. The footplate is well clear of the frames so wouldn't be a problem.
Fantastic to see Craig mate bet your chuffed to bits. Are you going to throat the blast pipe to get that more noticeable chuff bit of a louder bark Keith Appleton did it to his black five. Interested to see the smoke box build seems to be a massive jump when the boiler is on the chassis although we know there's plenty of work still to be done fantastic work and video again mate it's a credit to you
Thanks Mark - Just been looking at the drawings - The drawings calls for a choked double chimney - that's a project in itself!!! Needs some serious head scratching!
@@no23mk2 I'm going to do it to both mine brit and the black 5 problem is the blast pipe on the brit is raised no room at all. Wow double chimney that will look amazing but yeah I'll be waiting to see how you do it before I attempt it as I've no clue but want to put my own stamp on them
Thank you. I generally do use some form of coolant or cutting oil dependant on the job in hand. When recording footage it can hide whats going on so don't use it unless I have to.

@@no23mk2 The mudring is the square at the bottom of the firebox that both the inside sheets and outside sheets of the firebox are attached to. On a full size locomotive it's a solid block, around 4" × 4" square on smaller locomotives, all the way around the bottom of the firebox. The wash out plugs at the bottom of the firebox are right above the mudring with the bottom of the hole being level with it. Its called a mudring because all the sludge, scale, and particles (mud) settles there and that's why the wash out plugs are where they are.
@@no23mk2 I worked at The NC Transportation Museum/Spencer Shops whilst in high school in the mechanical department for the trains. I was assistant to the master mechanic. In 2002 when I graduated high school I worked for a year with a man that traveled around rebuilding steam locomotives. I help tear down and restore an American 4-4-0 type locomotive. Best fun I've ever had and got pay very well too. Should have made a career out of it but hindsight is 20/20.
