GARDINER - Wildflower Farms, which opens in this Ulster County town at the end of September, is the kind of luxury hotel that draws people from all over the world. The 65 cabins on 140 acres - formerly a tree nursery and before that a dairy farm for three generations - are beyond gorgeous down to every last detail; even the bathrobes are one-of-a-kind stunning. Some cabins with unparalleled views of the Gunks were built around trees so they didn’t have to be cut down.
This sort of meticulous design is both thoughtful and charming, but in the Hudson Valley, Wildflower Farms is also polarizing. There’s the price tag: Wildflower’s cabins, designed by New York-based Ward and Gray, start at $1,000 (plus taxes and fees!). And there’s the history: some Hudson Valley residents have spent years protesting the project, which was first proposed as an eco-glamping endeavor named Heartwood.
