Love the concept of pulling apart a scenario but this one seems to be heavily skewed to the very top end of what people have accumulated. Either that or I am totally out of touch with the average person. I would love to know where this fictitious couple sit in terms of are they in the top 10-15% of the population. If he is 62 and works for another 3 years it would be fair to assume they would have at least $2.5m and be clear of debt. Assuming NO return at all (just invest in the safety of cash) drawing down $80 000 a year would last you until your 95. Investing conservatively would make an even more comfortable retirement. I don't think this is typical of the average person. How about a scenario that a few more people might relate to? If I related my own circumstances to this fictitious couple I would be working until I was 75, be thoroughly miserable and then probably drop dead shortly after I retire from absolute exhaustion.
Great point(s), Peter! Jamie & Drew did say 'this is too easy, make the situation harder next time'. So, next time -- it'll be more difficult! Great points all round mate. Owen
