It really is possible to buy a leather razor strop that is well made and works great for $20. It makes a great beginner strop or for an extra travel strop.

I have this same strop I believe made in the same factory branded as "Garos Goods" stamped in the leather. Sure looks like a perfect copy of the Dovo. It only cost me $25.00 from Warriors and Wonders in Vancouver BC, Canada. I'm new to the straight razor world and I already blow too much money on other things so I didn't want to splurge to much on a piece of leather. It appears to be bonded leather which makes for a cheap junkie $5 belt but bonded leather is a great way to keep the price down and it does not have to put up with stressed that makes a belt fall apart after only a few times of wearing. Great deal, and yes I nicked it a few times so it's great for beginners. My first strop was made of a quality 3" piece of rubber with a 1 micron diamond paste applied and I'm not sure if it was actually making any positive difference to my razor edge but I just couldn't justify paying such big bucks for a quality strop. I have seen super cheap junk strops at so called reputable knife sellers and barber shop franchises than are 1 1/2" long and 11" long and they put $90 price tags on them along with their logo, these people certainly have now idea what kind of junk they are selling or how insulting it is to the sucker who may just buy it. My Dad found a box of old straight razor at a sale and paid $4 dollars for the entire box, he offered to give them to me when I showed and interest but I had to at least give him $20. There were some Bokers and a couple English made brands from the early 1900's I think, my fav so far is one called a "Progress" full hollow ground, and second would be a Boker "Puritan" Which I got laser sharp after a final honing on .3 micro lapping film ( far less than comfortable and a bit of a massacre).... since using the leather strop the shave has become much more comfortable and it is closely competing for the #1 position in my collection. My other obsession were I spend too much money is on high end folders. Straight razors feel like a natural progression for me learning and developing the art of sharpness and edge technology. Again, thank for your sharing your knowledge. And a good shave to you Sir.

Hey Doc how are you What you thoughts on these 2 items for strop LATIGO Leather and Natural Hermann Oak, springfile leather co told me they are boath very popular for strops, The latigo is waxier and oil finished, and the hermann oak has a little more grainier finish. The latigo would be good after using balsa with multiple compounds and the Natural Hermann Oak would have a little more resistance? Sorry for asking this but Im from Brazil and didnt kind understood the DRAW you say on razors, More draw is more resistance, less draw would be for a very smooth leather? Thanks

I don't know if draw is directly connected to smooth leather or not. Some strops have more than others and some guys like it and others don't. I can't even say if a strop with draw or lack of draw gives a better or different edge.

Will sanding a strop contaminate it with larger abrasive particles? I see a lot of talk (manufacturers and users) about sanding the leather to remove excess compound, raise the fiber, or smooth out rough spots. It seems like sandpaper might leave particles embedded in the leather. P.S.- I recently found your channel and have learned a lot!

bonfe roni - I’ve heard of sanding out nicks but I wouldn’t sand the entire surface. I rub it before use with my palm to clean it and put some oils from my hand in it to keep it supple.

Think I would smooth out the leather on a wood block rolling it on the wood till wood looks shiney. Barbers would rub their skin and hands on leather to add oil plus warm the leather before stropping.

Dr Matt...it did not take much time after using this strop that I cut it. The obvious thing is if I cut one end off then the strip is useless. However what about somewhere in between? I guess at what point have you nicked and cut the strip enough to break out the wallet and buy a new one? Thanks for your time...Brian

email me a picture but it shouldn't be a problem. Just nip off any hanging piece and sand it smooth then keep going. You get a new one when you stop nicking this one.😉

Hey I sent you a picture via email because I probably am not man enough to take the public flogging for stupidity.

Dr. Matt; Might the felt block be used instead of a cork for safety razor blades like feather to make them less harsh? Keep up the great work. -George

George, I've never heard of using cork on DE blades or otherwise but the texture and/or density of it and the felt block are similar. So I would say yes, you could substitute the block for cork... or vice versa.

Dr Matt, why can't barber's use real straights anymore yet people can date in male restrooms in train stations and truck stop restrooms?
