Is this considered a dress watch or an everyday watch. I’m looking for something with these specs to wear as an everyday watch whether that’s shorts/jeans and T-shirt or with a button down or polo.
probably because seikos website and categories/naming conventions are absolutely trash... who do they think is sitting around wondering which 'essentials' model they should buy? answer: they dont think about things like that
I get that they have a ton of models, and that means endless letters and digits to identify each model. But damn...what better reason for them to make their modeling convention easier to understand?! It is maddening.
@@davidcouzens6287it's honestly worth complaining about loudly. Imagine if Honda autos sold model FG372653 and FA361734 as their everyday essentials product line.
Facts! A good example is the pressage series that has a ton of sub series in it. And instead of naming the cocktail time watches after the fucking cocktails they are inspired from, they use letters and numbers. Why?!
I've seen the models on other large departmental store websites. The first time I saw one I actually thought it was a SARB, but realized it wasn't. They are good looking models imo. Good to see these models getting recognition 👍
I discovered these models two years ago. My favorite is the SUR309. After trying to salvage the original bracelet by replacing the clasp and wearing the watch in a leather strap I finally got serious and found a Miltap oyster bracelet that is a very good fit. The watch keeps almost perfect time gaining only a few seconds/month.
I own a previous generation of this with a day complication. Same bracelet and also 100M. I wear it once in a while. It’s a very solid look and I love how thin it is.
Shoutout to the cheap, dress Seiko. I've got a 25 year old V739-0B30 that I paid around $300 I think. It looks super similar to these SUR models but has roman numerals at the 12 and 6 with a dark navy blue dial. It is REMARKABLY slim. I still love it.
Thank you for this review, I've had my eye on these for while. Seiko also had a very nice Titanium version in this range. I bought one a SNE527 model earlier in the year, would be nice to see your take on the SNE models as well. Very refreshing to see some quartz content as well on youtube.
I really like these watches. One of the SUR quartz models with day/date and blue dial was offered to me as a suitable beater watch in a Seiko outlet store, which I bought. The bracelet is nice enough looking but literally fell apart, so I have it on a Hirsch kautschuk band. It was indeed a gateway watch for me, since I now own two Grand Seikos and a Seiko SLA diver. It’s accurate to 1-2 seconds a month.
My 309 just arrived and I must say it is a gorgeous watch (it seems darker blue than in the photos and videos, but that's not bad). For my 7.5 inch wrist, this watch fits perfectly, but it might wear too large on smaller wrists. Seiko 5 was my gateway to this brand and my only Seiko before the 309, but the 309 fits so much better and is a whole other level of quality despite being a quartz (but that does make it more accurate and reliable at least). I can't believe the quality of this brand for the price.
I came here after I saw the blue dial SUR at the storefront of a local watch shop yesterday. Definitely caught my eye, it is a beautiful watch at a reasonable price.
Great video! These look great, and I agree it’s a fantastic value proposition. Seiko is far and away my favorite watch maker. And I’ve gotten over the quartz-snobbery as well- I was putting on my Casio Duro while watching this.
Undoubtably great value. Especially the Titainium version I would say. I don't like the hollow end links though, but I'd very happily wear it on a strap, and the black version is a actually a strapmonster. It has that slight goldenbrown sheen to it in direct sunlight, just like my Presage and even found on some GS dials. However, I wish they offered a slightly more mid-range/higher end version in between this and the GS 9F Heritage as well. They kinda do, but sadly only in the Japanese Domestic Market. They are the Astron SBXY033 and the SBTM341. Both solid end links, milled clasp, and a higher grade 7-series movement (like in two steps below the 9F in a Grand Seiko, but one step above the 6-series movement in the SUR line.)
They have the Sharp Edge series, which I call mid tier, just below King Seiko, which are similar to this kind of design. Not sure there are any quartz in the line up thou. Then King Seiko of course. I came across Seiko 'Brights' also. Not sure which year they were made. And the Sarb 033...
@@schizoidman9781 I think the quartz mid-range models that Seiko have these days are all models with radio-controlled movements sold in Japan only. The only model I know of that has what you might consider a mid-range normal quartz is the Tuna with the 7C46 (if it isn't discontinued yet), sitting in between a GS 9F and these entry level pieces (although it sells for almost as much as a GS). So in essence, there is no middle ground of "normal quartz" with this kind of styling. It doesn't exist as far as I know, and instead one must go radio-controlled and get something like the Astron SBXY033 or SBTM339 JDM-models
Nice. Still hit or miss whether a particular one's second hand hits on the indices instead of between them. I cannot take splitting the indicator marks in half with the second hand, deal breaker.
Dang it, I was hoping the internet would keep sleeping on this line. Literally my favorite watch to wear to work. Don’t like flexing my luxury mechanicals in the office, but this watch makes me feel lux on its own
Wife got me the pink one and I can't believe how nice it looks in person. Doesn't just look like some Seiko. I am definitely looking to get one in another color!
Thanks for showing these watches some love, Teddy. I've been wearing the SUR373 daily for nine months. It ended watch buying for me. I went through 13 watches before settling on the SUR. Mechanical watches, field watches, dive watches, etc. The SUR373 is lightweight, thin, comfortable, looks good with any outfit, and of course is accurate because it's a quartz. For me, it's the perfect watch.
@@kahaniguruhindi He only has authorisation to sell watches in certain markets, and it cuts down on logistical issues, it just makes sense unfortunately. I don't see why that stops you from subscribing or watching regularly tho lmao
@@levlzr You got it wrong. I watch few videos which looks a surprising craftsmanship or offers a better value. Obviously, no one will be able to put giveaways in every watch video. I meant in previous comment that youtubers earn money and recognition across the world especially english talking channels. But targetting only current region and leaving other regions not good. At least add few more blocks. Anyway it’s a personal preference.
Thank you, Teddy. I just picked up the SUR527 and it’s magnificent. it’s a perfect every day watch and it’s gorgeous. It’s a perfect companion to my submariner.
I have a Grand Seiko that looks almost exactly like the blue Seiko…. Only mine was like 15 times the price with a slightly better clasp…. WOW, Great Value here!!!
Got a SUR307 as a gift a while back. At first impression it was sort of just okay (already own a SARB). Honestly though, over time it has grown on me - and does sort of portray that "baby Grand Seiko". The finishing is impressive, super comfortable to wear, great lume, classic dial - can't really beat the bang for buck on these.
I have the full stainless. Bought about two weeks ago and absolutely love it. Classic timeless style. I’ve always had gshock or fashion brands like Nixon, rip curl and alike. Perfect watch to dip your toe into the dress sport style. I love it and now I’m saving for a omega aqua terra lol The watch game is a slippery slope
Halfway through the video, around when the teal model comes up at 6:19, I realize Seiko is releasing baby versions of the Grand Seiko static design (may or may not be prompted from Teddy's mention of Quartz being more of an option, and GS obviously using elements of quartz in their Spring Drive movements)
I love my sur307, but i really want to find a high quality solid steel bracelet for it. Any ideas? Edit. Ordered a jubilee bracelet from strapco, fit perfect but quality is crap. Seiko stock bracelet is way better.
I bought the SUR527 and not gonna lie it's a great watch, super comfortable on the wrist to the point I often forget it's on, and while it is a 40mm it doesn't feel like a 40mm on the wrist. The only small gripe I have is with the bracelet, just wish it had more micro adjustments
Baught the sur309p , blue. Absolutely gorgeous. Can't take it off my wrist . The finishing in low light levels is fanominial. It is a scratch magnet but so are my higher end watches. You can't go wrong for the price . Amazing watch . Pictures and video don't do it justice. Gives off a omega aqua terra vibe
I received the black SUR311 four years ago as birthday gift. Was all i wore for 2.5 years before i got more into the hobby. Great watch that keeps amazing time. Mine runs +1-2 seconds every 6 months.
I just got into watches a few months back and you nailed it Ted, SUR 309 was my gateway watch. It fits great, love the color, and is exactly a do it all set it and forget it at a tremendous price, especially considering the sapphire. I was shocked at the little amount i saw online of reviewers and publicity these models got. I would highly recommend to anyone starting out, its got great features at a great price and opened up my world of watches
The Seiko Solar SNE523 is still my most worn watch. Sapphire glass, no need to replace batteries, great accuracy and a simple versatile design. While these Qarz versions look good aswell. For that price I would always go for the Solar
@@dave-ld8mo You will absolutely need to replace your solar battery at one point - and that is more complicated than changing a regular battery. That goes for all solar watches, not just Seiko. Citizen Eco Drive seem to have the most durable batteries that usually last 10-20 years. Seiko solar batteries have to be replaced roughly every 10 years, according to the Seiko ADs that I spoke to. And if you are swimming with your watch on, you will have to change the gaskets every couple of years which means you're still going to have to open the case back and probably remove the crown every once in a while. So that can obviously be used for a simple and quick battery change as well. Solar is cool, nothing wrong with it, but it hardly provides an improvement over regular batteries, and absolutely no improvement over regular batteries in watches that go into water.
Dear Teddy, Practically speaking, when you talk about very accurate time keepers without the hassel of continuous daily use of Automatic watches; then quartz watches are the best choice. They are Sports watches for daily use and Dressy at the same time with very beautifull looks and slim design. For a watch having Sapphire Crystal, 100 meters WR with Stainless Steel Bracelet and Date Just, then it is the most reliable and cost saving watch from Seiko by all measures. Many Thanks for this review and Best Regards from Egypt.
I just came across this video,I must have missed it, kinda like folks have missed this watch, I have an anthracite version of this one and it's really good. I have a large collection but this is still after years a really prominent part of my rotation. Great watches 😀👍
Small question if anyone is aware of this: Is there a difference between the SUR525 and the SUR525P1, on the pictures, the color seems to vary and they are always the same price at the same retailer. Thanks!
I needed an affordable Quartz everyday watch last year. I couldn't find SUR309 here in Iran, thanks to the Regime. So my cousin bought two SUR309s in Canada, one for me and one for my father. Someone brought them for me to Iran. Maybe I should have put that effort somewhere else 😂😂
Ive had a navy blue SUR for 6months now. I wanted the 37mm but they are sold out everywhere. Does this mean they are more popular or less were made? This is a classy looking watch that looks much better than my 3 Addiesdives (2128,2023 pt 5000,2118) 3 fine watches in their own right. I'm not a fan of the bracelet pins. The second hand on mine misses every marker :( Mine is running about -5 secs a week. Id of liked a little mofe accuracy but these are my only criticisms. It is accurate enough, chronometer accurate still, super comfortable, looks great, all steel, sapphire crystal, 100m wr, push crown which i wanted for my everyday watch, screw crowns play on my mind , ie will they will last, it looks classy but not blingy or flash, the dark navy dial literally goes with any outfit from track suit to tailored suit and any strap. Mines on a Bond style nato. And you have Seiko name and build. An excellent gada watch.
For me the SKS pepsi is the best watch made by seiko, period, I could not live without mine. Now the SARB first time I saw with a colleague I thought it was a rolex or other very expensive brand, I was astonished when i realized it was a seiko, unfortunately was already discontinued by then otherwise would be in the collection without thinking twice.
teddy, you are spot on with these, they fly under the radar, recently bought the pink dial, beautiful, and changed the bracelet to a beads of rice, just gorgeous,
Did you find a BOR bracelet with fitting curved end links? If so: where did you find one? My green dial variant arrived Yesterday. Its a great watch for the price. The only downside is the stock bracelet indeed. So I was looking to upgrade it with a beads of rice!
There is a reason why I have more Seiko watches, in my 14 watch collection, than any other brand. There isn't a single brand that offers more value for money than Seiko. In a way, the ability of Seiko to offer so much, for relatively so little, is a microcosm for why the Japanese are so successful as a culture. They have such a small country, and are relatively resource poor, but their dedication to excellence and perfection, allows their global economic and cultural impact to far outweigh their small population and geography.
I ran into this watch browsing Seiko and thought they were good looking. I ended up getting the Titanium version for about $50 more. A very grown up dress watch for a reasonable price. I got the grey dial. These models are what keeps people buying Seiko. A good value watch requiring little maintenance that will last many years.
Why is there SUR531 and SUR531P1? I can't find any difference between them & I can't find out what P1 means anywhere. I bought one and the pin that connects the band to the face is misaligned months later, and when I contacted the seller, they opted to refund what I bought rather than sending it in for repair. I love the color, but am reluctant to re-buy it and risk that problem. I'm a professional gardener and have beat the snot out of my Citizen Eco-Drive watch for years and thought I'd move to something a little spiffier...
I would like to sell my gold/silver version of this; what would these go for? I do not have original packaging I do have purchase receipt from Macy’s. I only wore it once. I love my dark blue dial one though and get a lot of looks. The sapphire crystal for under $250 is crazy. Today you got to spend $500 from Seiko.
I do not have one of these cheaper Seikos. I do have about 10 upper cost models along with 2 Rolex and 6 Omega watches. Oh yes, being Italian I have two PANERAI as well. I wear the Seikos as a daily wear due to the durability.
I have the sur307 silver dial and its s beautiful piece. I dont dress up much so the price goes well for a watch i rarely wear. I want the black dial for everyday wear.
In Europe you can get the automatic Citizen Tsuyosa with similar styling for 250 bucks, including taxes and shipping...or a nice set-and-forget Citizen solar quartz watch. Seiko just does not offer enough value anymore. Besides, you can get a well build stainless steel quartz watch from Asia or even from some fashion brands (their quality got better) for $100 dollars. 100% price increase just for the Seiko brand?
Citizen has a quartz that's strikingly similar to this Seiko- minus the sapphire crystal, but plus a day AND date, still with great finishing and a beautiful sunray dial- for $80.
The hand for the seconds does not hit the points on the dial correctly. It makes me feel that they did not care enough when making these watches for this price range. I would rather buy the Addiesdive automatic...much more value for your money and I just love the print on the dials.
And one I won't talk about as for me...if it is not have a Day Date complications, is 40-44mm case and no thicker than 12.5 mm which rules out most of the Seiko watches while I like them can't buy or wear one. I have the hand size and 7-7 and 1/4 wrist but the bulbus 13.5 to 14mm case size just doesn't work for me.
Teddy it’ll be amazing if you make a video to give your opinion on modding in general! Cause it’s a market which growing really quickly theses days because the amount of people interested in watch industry! Hope this idea pleases you, take care !
I own one with the white dial. Very beautiful watch, and it stays accurate to the second for days (I adjust all my watches to atomic time). BUT…the bracelet is superrrr cheap. I probably wore this 4 times before the clasp broke. And this was a couple of years ago. Still haven’t gotten it fixed.
Like most of us I tend to like automatics, but hey these Seiko's do offer very good value for money. Would be a nice Christmas gift for someone who would like a good, no gimmicks set it and forget it bargain 😊.
