One of the pretty commuter lines in the NYC area is the Gladstone Branch. We cover highlights of a round trip journey from Hoboken. I normally don’t shoot outside windows but my video differs from most as I provide commentary to make the trip interesting. The town of Gladstone itself provides its own charm. Adding to the charm are the 40 plus year old Arrow MU’s with their nostalgic Westinghouse AA2 horns provide primary power on this scenic Branch. My traveling companion provided an April Fools opinion of the journey. He enjoyed it immensely. (BTW-Willie Wilson lived in Summit NJ as a child but he wasn’t born there)

From the 1980s until October of 2019, I used to live in Peapack and could see trains pass by every day. I don't know if you can see the old house I used to live in this video, but it's there shortly past the Peapack Station (about 40:50 or so). It's just before we pass that structure with the sand inside it that they use to sand the roads during Winter storms. I miss Peapack a lot. That was one of my two childhood home towns...the other being Somerville.

Thanks. Very enjoyable. I commuted daily on the Morristown Line from Dover to Hoboken, then Path on into lower Manhattan for some years. Then in 1983 we bought a house a mile from the Gillette station, so I used the Gladstone Branch from that station until my work transferred to Basking Ridge. I wish I'd had the great background on the route and stations then that you provided in this video. If course we didn't have these new-fangled cars then, but the real ones with wicker seats. I was pretty familiar with the area from Gillette, Sterling, Basking Ridge, Bernardsville, and on out to Gladstone at the time. It was nice to see that again.

Unchanged for 30 years is absolutely correct. Same trains and schedule as what ran through my backyard in the 90s. Although back then we still got the occasional freight service. Nice video 👍

Jackie O owned a gorgeous big house in Peapack where she used to ride horses on weekends.

This line is like a true interurban! These horns were very common on many interurbans.

I live in the next county north of the one Gladstone is in.. The area around Bernardsville and Peapack is the ritziest part of NJ. it's horse country, which is why the steeplechase races take place there. Jaqueline Onassis and even the King of Morocco had estates there. BTW: on the return trip, the conductor mentioned Chuck Walsh, who did a series on the Lackawanna Cutoff, which was a record-setting engineering achievement of the Lackawanna RR in 1911. I recommend it to all rail fans.

Congrats on 1k subscribers. As an English rail enthusiast with an interest in but limited knowledge of US railroading, I find your vlogs with your informative commentaries fascinating as they cover not just rolling stock but infrastructure, history and local background. I watch many many you tube railroad videos and for me yours are the best. Thank you for sharing your hobby and making lockdown the other side of the Atlantic pass a little easier. This vlog is a great example.

That is quite a flattering testimonial. I appreciate you and viewers like you that have gotten me to this level of interest. I’m just being myself trying to provide sone railroad entertainment. Before I knew it, I had 1000 subs. Thanks for your interest. My maternal grandmother was from England so I have some bloodline interest in your country.

I live around the corner from the Gladstone Station. It was really neat seeing my town on RU-vid. Also loved your SEPTA Thorndale/Paoli ride. I was a Villanova student in the mid 80's. Rode that line many times. Next time you are out here give a shout.

Watched this especially for Maplewood. The half-timbered look if the station was mirrored in many to the Maplewood village buildings.

That AA2 HORN sounds very much like the old South Shore Line cars, and the North Shore Line cars as well as some of the steel Chicago, Aurora, and Elgin cars. The Electroliners had a low pitched fog horn and also there were a pair of horns that sounded identical to these horns if I'm not mistaken.

I miss the old MU cars that used to operate on that line - DC overhead - I wonder if a Chicago and South Shore ' Little Joe ' electric locomotive could have operated on the line. Just curious.

Thank you for sharing. This Nebraska guy wanted to know what it is like for people to escape the big city. I have to drive to and from Omaha. Amtrak only has one night train each way. Again, thank you.

Grew up in Basking Ridge. Lyons was the station we would use to go into the city. Great video, brought back memories of my many rides.

Nice ride to Gladstone on NJT. I'm from the Atlanta GA area where we have tons of NS & CSX freight trains plus 2 Amtraks per day. Our commuter system is a computerized system to where the "driver" opens/closes doors and can operate train in emergencies, but for the most part, the train itself is totally self run

These horns were on Chicago's Interurbans lines of the Chicago,Aurora, and Elgin, The South Shore Line, and the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee electric Interurbans. Also the North Shore Line Electroliners have these horns you here in addition to a loud low pitched fog horn like horn. I think the motorman would choose which horns he wanted to use on the Electroliners.

7:04 is where you pass underneath the Newark City Subway. Orange Street Station is above you to the left.

If you ever update it or in future videos can you point out when the statins go from high platform to low? I have made this ride several times for fun. It is a bit like a time machine / teleporter. It takes you from modern NYC/New Jersey to the English countryside!

1:05-1:18 I don't care that the DPs are ugly since they run on electricity and not diesel when they are on an electric branch like the NEC n of Newark. I actually like the look of the DPs
