So I am debating between these two services. And both definitely have pro and cons. I'd love to see an update to this video. Especially with the move to remote work in mind.

I would love to have a coffee with you and chat about things like this. I feel 365 is a little better as an email service, yes it is not a quick, but as an admin, EOL is significantly better then having to deal with gsuite. mail control and functionality is very limited in gsuite.

TLDR version G-Suite - for basic administration roles, easy shared docs and planning, basic api cron jobs Office 365 - for accountants, technical roles, complex api cron jobs A person with Sharepoint expertise will bring more value to medium/big organizations than a person with G-Suite expertise. Use both for different departments.

In fact Microsoft gives two options for collaboration, one with outlook and o365 groups based on email thread and teams which is more like a IM format. Groups is a shared workspace for collaboration, unlike teams it has got email messages, separate Sharepoint folder, calendars etc.

I actually use both for different reasons. Everything related to my personal brand and tools for communication, is G Suite. And I use O365 for MS programs, which I'll never be able to break away from. I'd probably be better off to just buy Office 2016 and only use G Suite. I'm open for suggestions though.

Latency is not an issue in Office 365 now. O365 is much better and creating rich documents. Google is ok if you are looking for simple documents with few features.
@christophmagnussen

The latency seems higher in O365 but otherwise it's pretty good - I think G Suite can do more than just simple documents but if you are looking for really advanced stuff, O365 is hard to beat, of course.

Just using Office 365 on my new laptop now. Word is unusable due to lag of what i type and what appears on the screen. Im not fussed about additional issues but if the program i need to type isnt workable in terms of typing then its a fail right from the start. I dont believe in paying for something if I have to fix its most prime functionality from the outset - which I have actually tried to do. The solution is what I used to tell people when I worked in IT - dont use microsofts latest products, they dont work properly until they have had a long time to debug from customer feedback (if they ever do)
@shastamathone
@shastamathone 6 лет назад
Sorry that you have latency issues. I'm not an apologist for anyone, but I experience imperceptible latency (if any) in Word Online; I do use Edge and perhaps that could account for some issues if you are using Chrome? Slides is a poor caricature of PowerPoint at this point. Docs is unusable in terms of math typesetting and this will remain a key barrier moving forward. Thank you for your update.

A. Real-time collaboration changed a lot in O365, it works great now. I have worked with both solutions and yes O365 was crap when it came to co-authoring, but now it's just perfect. B. You still mostly jumped into a feature feature comparison, the comparison of "if you want functionality go to O365, if you want fast collaboration go to Google" was what Google used in sales competition 5 years ago. C. Microsoft is also using CDNs and cached databases to help fast retrieve of the documents. D. When it comes to large businesses, yes you will need 300 people in a call, we do that all the time. F. The information mentioned in your video are amazing. Nonetheless, this is exactly what I thought until I started working with M365 and not O365. You missed things like outlook configurations with Gsuite, how it takes lots of time, crash and the migration between folders and labels problems. Small businesses would work great with Gsuite because true they do want to have something fast and easy. But when it comes to enterprises and you're speaking from devices point of view, identity protection and access management, exchange servers that need to stay in hybrid model with the cloud (Because change management in enterprises never works so easily as the way you're representing it). You will find that O365 will fit perfectly with other on-premise applications that cannot jump to the cloud right away such as Oracle, SAP development from a SSO perspective and devices management. There are lots of things to look at that the Google simplicity can never help with Enterprises and corporates.
@christophmagnussen
@christophmagnussen 6 лет назад
True, the video is almost a year old by now and things change quickly. However, most of the issues you talk about are kind of a moot point because G Suite is different - if you are that stubborn to still use Outlook, the problem is not Google, it's the culture of the company. Same with other things like MDM - use a real one like MobileIron not some "added feature" from Microsoft or Google. Simplicity is a choice - but the choice needs to be made at the top, otherwise we will continue to end up with hybrid clouds, Outlook and other similar things.
@lilseraphin
@lilseraphin 6 лет назад
Christoph Magnussen aside from stubborn people who want to use outlook. Hybrid clouds are not because of stubbornness but there are lots of factors to actually move a company dark to cloud, where Google still is not as mature in. In larger companies, the G suite mostly compete with the M365 suite, which might get Google to only win if you compare the prices..

I worked in IT for last 20+ years working with largest pharmaceuticals to top Fortune 100 companies and non of them use Google Docs. Also in a company how often you shadow/collaborate online? Most of the time it is faster to modify and send feedbacks or just project in a conf call or webex. Believe me these ppl who do utube are not telling the whole story. Also, when you work with customers with excel, word and ppt, your life is a living hell trying to convert to google docs!

One key item to consider is accessibility when offline (or with limited internet). Google has pretty good android apps that work well. But their desktop apps' support ranges from none to laughable. I work as a IT consultant in professional services. Spent about 220 hr/yr flying, and 80% of time working remote in locations with little to no internet. The Android app is not really an alternative since most of our emails include screenshots and attachments. For this nothing beats a true email client. Oh how I miss Outlook's offline features or download headers only.... That said. Google Drive works a lot better than OneDrive. But Google's messaging is horrible (bring back Google Talk!!!), the worst possible thing you can do to yourself if you have worldwide locations and have ADHD. Finally, remember that all things google are blocked in China. So no email, no calendar, etc. I worked and configure myself both Google Apps and O365 for many years. I would say that now there's absolutely no reason to go with Google Apps. Microsoft has matched most features and several aspects surpassed them.

Good video my favourite points are about knowing what you want from the tools you use and making sure everyone knows not only how to use the technology but why it was chosen over the other in the first place. Too many people just accept crap or live with amazing software using a fraction of its potential and not caring how to use it. That last point is the reason why so many companies become inefficient. Of course it would be nice for everyone to have loads of money and just buy Office 365 and aa much apple products you could possibly want. However A. its not cost effective and B. it will still not get you the best results because you've just accepted what is supposedly industry standard and forgotten to ask the basic questions. What is industry standard?. Why is it industry standard?. Finally Regardless of industry standard tech the last question should be. Does industey standard cover all of my own personal or corporate needs?. Those questions can keep a person ocupied for months but they'll hopefully make you and your company get whats right for them.

While a nice try you glossed over some key issues. One of them is formatting. One of my customers, a very non technical oriented one, switched from G to O365 because of loss of formatting of some fairly basic formats they used in Word, uploaded to G and found when they reopened them that the docs formatting was changed. . I try to explain to customers that I don't care which they use, but if they are Windows oriented, using a lot of Word and Excel in their work they likely will find it more easy to integrate with 365 than with Google. Less issues. Also integration with iphones and O365 is very good IMHO. Sharepoint has been pretty useful, I don't think it alone is better than Dropbox or Google Cloud. It's certainly *much* improved. Lastly, the MSFT technical support is superb. I've had to call them on a couple of issues, each time, I can easily make a ticket, call and even get call back with the ability to switch my phone while waiting (ie.. start a ticket with one call back phone and then reedit the ticket before call back if I have to go out). There's lots more but to me I see it as a two very different products, and useful to different kinds of end user setups. Both are good products. I could go on but that's the jist.

Informative, but clearly biased toward G-Suite, especially since he showed no examples of Office 365 and some of his descriptions in terms of real time collaboration in an online environment were not accurate pertaining to O365. I like and use both. For a business environment, it seems, the deciding factors would be security, training and implementation costs (including loss of productivity), and whether or not purely online tools are powerful enough to meet your business needs.

I honestly tried to get into Microsoft Office 365 for personal use. I keep going back to Google Docs just because it works on all of my devices with no problems. Word on Chromebook and Android feels bloated. Google Docs, while may have its formatting issues, is more than doable in finding a work-around as long you implement best practices. I know finding a job with skills in Google Drive/Docs will be a hard sell especially since I work food service, but I can't be bothered with Microsoft Office; I really hate turning on my desktop just to balance my checkbook on the fly.

As someone who has supported both solutions in over 100+ user environments with various complexities and needs, I really only use O365. It simply offers more for the money. I still remember trying to manage the GAL (global address list) in GApps so that I could add external contacts and they wanted me to run some python script or purchase a 3rd party addon (really? 365 provides this out of the box, really simple). Couldn't ever get Shared Contacts to work like you can in Outlook. In all the companies I've worked with Google Docs/Sheets/etc simply can't meet the needs (or would require a ton or time and money) compared to Office. #1 offender being Excel, which if you've worked with any Company that has Scientists/QA/Legal/etc good luck with Google. Also, I remember when I first was looking at solutions Google would NOT sign a BAA (business associate agreement) making it unsuitable for use in any HIPAA regulated company and other regulated companies. Anyone with a Windows desktop environment and of any decent size will have some form of centralized authentication, authorization, and accounting system like Active Directory (I've been using Samba4 as my AD quite a bit personally). The integration that Office365 provided to onsite Active Directory is major. The AD Connect tool they provide has been getting better and better over time. And at this point you can set yourself up so that your Azure AD cloud for Office365 (and all the cloud software that can integrate to Azure AD) is an extension of your onsite accounts. This offers great flexability and ease of use for users. A single user account that logs you into your desktop, Office365, and any software that can use Azure AD. The latest release even makes SSO a simple process to setup. Install AD Connect, run through the setup wizard which takes all of 10 minutes. It's amazing. GApps also simply doesn't expand and refine it's offerings like Microsoft is going with Office365. Constantly adding new features. For example PowerBI, Skype Meeting Broadcast (schedule and broadcast meetings/events to 10,000 attendees), Planner, Video (soon to be called Stream), Groups, Yammer, Delve, Sway, Booking, Teams, PowerApps, Flow, Forms. Almost forgot the work they are doing with their Voice offerings (purchase #'s, auto attendant/IVR, etc). Adding Online Archiving (extra 50GB) for every single email user. Allowing Real-Time Collaboration Online AND using the full Desktop Office Suite (if you haven't used this in the past year you aren't really comparing the real world today). Then you have the constant reworking and streamlining of other core apps, like the much better experience to the new Sharepoint. Or the rework of the Admin controls, Security and Compliance, and so on. I don't think most people even realize how much Microsoft is providing. Business Premium at $12.50/usr/mo is a really great deal when all is said and done. Trying to replicate it with Google will not match it, even after you spend a bunch more on other third party tools.
@PhilScottCanada
@PhilScottCanada 7 лет назад
nah, I'm not convinced that this guy gave Google Gsuite a real shot. You are just naming msft tech-upcoming and legacy. I doubt Google strives to match every msft feature in their products. And msft probably can't match what Google is doing today since they aren't natively built in the Cloud.

G Suite Sync for Microsoft Outlook Wins! With Google Contacts you add as many Phone Numbers as you like to one contact. e.g. I can add say ten Work numbers to a single contact and say five Mobile numbers to the same single contact but with Microsoft Outlook 365 or 2019 you are restricted to only two Work Numbers and One Mobile Number. If you sync your Google contacts with Outlook via Exchange and add more than two work numbers to you contact on Google it then will not sync with Outlook. Microsoft Outlook has not changed the contact number fields since the first Outlook for MS-DOS. G Suite clearly Wins!

We used it in our company too but this solution has the caveat of limited space in mailboxes. Any Imap Client is much better. For example Kmail works great if aviable.

Christoph Magnussen, are you in Germany? Germany has limits for the use of Office365, there is simply different capabilities in Germany. Aslo, there is laws involved for companies. Google has a data storage scheme which is structured for speed. Microsoft has a storage model built on compliance, ie you can storage your data legally in a region because of compliance. This is the number one reason that most experience lag. Did we take this into consideration. Theres a lot more at play here than simple, this is faster, this is slower. Can google control, setup and wipe user data vs company data on devices? This is what you need to get into.

You should discuss the privacy concerns related to using the cloud, at least mention one or two points. I know many orgs that feel quite uncomfortable storing PII on someone else's computer (i.e. the cloud).

Work in the O365 sphere so I am a bit biased, but I see Gsuite a lot with SMB clients. If the company can afford O365, then it is night and day compared to the Gsuite. The capabilities are endless with an E3 licenses compared to google, there is a reason the dominate the fortune 500 market. GSuite is cheap and flexible, and still has fantastic solutions but it is night and day as far as a comparison with an E3 license.

I use a combination of the two. Everything I do is in the G-Suite space, except documents, spreadsheets and presentations. There is just so much functionality missing in Google’s offerings (i.e. Docs, Sheets and Slides). I tend to use advanced features quite regularly, and they are often unavailable on cloud based services, including Office Online. I cannot seem to get away from having a copy of Office on my computer.

Disagree with " the basics". You can't have a crystal clear plan for the future, especially in business and tech. You can guess or try to forecast but things rarely turn out exactly as you planned. Of course it's better to have some plan than no plan. But Michael Phelps was very lucky in those 5 years to never be sick or injured (not sure how that's actually possible). Everything is always changing. You need to be adaptable, not stick to a fixed plan. When it comes to business software, don't agonise over implementing the perfect solution, there's no such thing. Just think about your needs for the next 12 months and choose a product that you think will meet most of your requirements.

This is a tad late in viewing since made in 2017, with it now being 2020, but it was informative. Also MS has far too many steps and too much reading involved. That said, may I suggest you not have any caffeine before taping these? I get the fast-speak and turned on CC to catch everything, and it did poorly by the way, but it would be nice if you could slow it down a tad. Just a suggestion. I know no one can stop being who they are. I get it, but you speak really, really, fast. You're not the only one. But the time it takes to view more than once to get what's been said wastes (my) time. Well done otherwise. I now understand more about G Suite and agree moving between them creates a lot of tension. At work we use Windows, at home I use Apple, and now I'm forced to learn all things Google, which I'm enjoying. Cheers, and keep up the good work

As a lifetime mac user (first comp in 1999) I always assumed that Microsoft was stodgy, I run a business with 25+ young people and they thought the same... but a week ago I did the bootcamp thing and windows 10 and o365 business premium (whatever the 13/month/user one is) and I am blown away... it is incredible how damn useful o365 is for business... replaces so many 3rd party apps, it is so robust! Every workaround we had is unnecessary in o365. I have no idea why Microsoft has such a bad rap! I don't ever want to go back to google! I am so sick of integrating all these apps that solve super specific problems and charge 10-100/month. I don't even mind the retro, chunky interface, I guess I am at the point where "beautiful" interfaces and hidden menus are less important than getting things done! Everyone has been standing behind my desk this week excited for when we roll out and they get to start using 0365!

Just migrated from GSuite and im astionished. For the same price you get like literally orders of magnitude ahead of GSuite in every single aspect. In some cases (collaboration and communication comparing Teams to Hangouts is like comparing Boeing 767 to some plastic tricycle in kindergarten of XIX century) Gmail shines, except it does not (compared to Outlook/MAPI with shared mailboxes and distribution lists) Just small fraction of Office365, the Exchange - beats everything Google ever had to offer. And yeah - this comes from the seasoned linux sysadmin. And by seasoned I mean really really seasoned. Meh, G is good for family business. Everything above 10 dynamic people will just suffer. Google Docs are nice, we will be still using the sheets. Rest - out.
@christophmagnussen
@christophmagnussen 7 лет назад
+Jonathan Hirschbaum thx for the glimpse in your setup and the ideas Jonathan. Using sheets oder excel means there are less collaborative docs needed for your setup. Did I get that correctly? Sounds like a solid setup and the right choice in your case. There are larger organizations though especially in the US cast up World really leveraging the fast collaboration tools of G over MS but it is really a case by case decision. There is no right and wrong yet. Besides these two the market looks still pretty empty

I recently started up a consult business and decided to use G Suite, many for price but also convenience. However I also have had to work in PowerPoint files and had to bite the bullet and get Office 365. My client uses O365 but I can't get into their network. So I can't use Teams, etc. Should I abandon G Suite and revert to O365, or continue to use G Suite and jump into O365 for their apps when I need to?

For me Google sheets just cant compare to excel. Especially when you are working with large spreadhseets. If I just needed email etc they are both excellent and a preference thing. But if you utilize the power of spreadsheets for large amounts of data, pivot tables etc you need excel. Personally I hate gmail UI and how labels work with Gmail but thats just me. Real time collaboration in google apps is better though.

Lost all my 1TB of data. The issue started In August 2019 .A software robot decided to block/ lock me out of my Onedrive and my microsoft account my account with no explanation. I paid £79 p year for Onedrive . I had it for two years now and they have blocked my account with no explanation at all, Not even paypal can get my money back even though I am within UK laws 14 days refund cooling-off period for this year , this is how giant companies behave. .Ironically all my data is still shared in the cloud so it's obviously a robot that decided and NOT a human. So when Artificial intelligence eventually (soon) rules the world then expect something akin to the film The Terminator since the present robots are useless, some people will end up as NONE citezens becuse some alorythum has decided ( computer says NO) . I have spent months now trying to hunt for a REAL person to speak to but to my horror story , there is no way on earth to contact anyone in Microsoft accounts because ironically you need an Unblocked account to even email them. How stupid is that? So beware if you lose access to your one drive because they lock you out, then they Blank you NEVER talk to you again. Then all your data WILL be lost or inaccessible ( in my case I can access some shared links I kept, thus proving no human has closed my account 2 months later). I would recommend like me you also back it all up to a local hard drive every so often but move to a cloud storage company who actually speaks to you if they have an issue. Of course i will never use them again. Its been 2 months now with zero contact from them and no matter how many times I fill in the form, the numb nuts automated system never reples and they never fix it, and I end up in going in telephone circles trying to access or find a real person to help me. They have recently taken an auto PayPal payment I had not canceled and not even Paypal would not help with a refund even though I am within my 14 day cooling off time which is UK law. These corporate companies are so big they just do not care about your data. using the number supplied they do not help you but good luck to you. I would never entrust important data to them. here is the numbers I have tried so far In the USA, (800) MICROSOFT (642-7676) In Canada, call (877)568-2495 In India, contact 0008004402130 In UK, contact 0800 026 03 30
