A-10 THUNDERBOLT But With 2 More Gatling Guns 😄🤣😄 

As someone who loads munitions on jets, I can confirm that the main issue with putting gun pods on every station isn't the recoil or weight, but having the wiring in order to operate all the stations. Especially with the A-10A since it is 100% analog with controls for munitions.

Yea it could probably take off with 8 gun pods but if you ever shot them all it would probably fly backwards

Somewhere, an A-10 is being fitted with multiple SUU-23/As for an experimental run. It labours along the runway, eating up every inch of tarmac before taking off. It's sluggish and ungainly, even for a Hog, but it manages to make it to the target zone. The pilot lines up the shot and presses the trigger. I think the question here isn't "can the a10 carry ten more guns?", it's "could the a10 airframe SURVIVE 11 guns firing at once?"...

Each M61 on its own weighs up to 230 lbs, not including ammo. I think the issue would be the recoil. Recoil already is a limiting factor for the GAU-8.

6:23 Fun fact: The early MiG-27's gun has so much recoil that it noticeably damaged the airframe when fired for more than a couple of seconds. There were cases of instrument panels falling out, landing lights breaking, canopies being ejected, landing gear not working, all caused by the gun. To the point where they had to reduce the rate of fire.

The real recoil power of the a-10 gun is 40kn or equivalent to the thrust of one of the engines

When that missile hit, it was almost exactly the amount of damage an A-10 in Kuwait that got hit by a SAM and made it back to base. The engine cover is at the air muesem by me.

The issue is those two pylons are the only ones wired to control the gun pods. On another note, the centerline pylon is for a fuel tank during ferry flights.

A custom battle definitely needs to happen with A-10s with their wings full of vulcans. Full tracer belt only

Pylon stations 1,2 and 10,11 have 14inch Lug spacings and Mau-50 bomb racks so they can't just carry the same things compared to the rest of the stations.

According to some internet digging they say the effective take off weigth an a10 can carry is 16k pounds worth of load, so yes if we take the 2k pound per gun pod it should be able to take off with 8 gun pods. Also it would be pretty effective at mimicing the russian cobra, after all all you had to do is fire all guns at once and the plane would just stop midair :D

well, the recoil of vulcans if mounted on wing(especially wing tips) would possibly be problematic for flying, and the dead weight of these gunpods does not seems too cost-effective.

I remember I could load the A10 up with gun pods in the game H.A.W.X. That was ridiculous. It was just a literal sky mop.

When people get excited and talk about loadouts I get excited and think about how war thunder is going to handle radar detectability based on smaller loadouts like when the f-35 can't use wing mounted weapons when going stealth

Jokes aside the hardpoints and the load an A-10 can carry is apart of the reason it’s still in service. Though it does admittedly have problems.

I feel like the A-10 is the first tough plane that they've actually modeled most of its toughness into the game.

The gua8 puts out 3/4 of the total thrust of both engines. The 2 20mms combined are stronger. Weight wise it can carry a full load, however the recoil would be something like 7 times the thrust of the plane so would be impractical. But that Russian mig-23 gun still holds the highest thrust to weight ratio of any of the guns. If you used it jetpack joyride style it would give a 50g acceleration and you'd jump mount Everest.

You can only mount any given weapon or other external system to a station that is wired to the avionics that controls the weapon or system. For instance, if you carry AGMs, 1 additional station is required for the camera and tracking pod that guides the AGM to its target.

You should check out the Italian C13 T90 It was the vehicle that got me my phirst nuke, and I’d like to see it and the ABUL/74 on the channel! The combo means in any terrain you can get to a sneaky spot, and scout phor tons of SP (Day 36) (But play the Hawk III first)

since the additional guns are mounted underneath the center of mass of the plane, the recoil is going to pull the nose down and the guns off target if you overdo it. also increases the risk of unintentional dirt-eating.

Day 22: Phly you should play the Strv M-42 DT. It has a 3.8 second autoloader with 5 shells, the turret traverse is great, and its surprisingly survivable Plus the APHE can pen pretty much anything from the front at its br (except for those damned jumbos)

it does not appear as though they have taken account of the A-10's natural durability there should be a option to have half the wing blown off yet for it still be able to fly giving you the chance to make it back to the airfield

You need to try the 30mm 4-barrel gun pods that they tried out on the F-16s. You might need to combine two adjacent pylons so you could mount 4 pods. Try that one on for size.

doing a little bit of math; (i rounded burst total up to 59kg/second) 59/4= 14.75kg/second for each gun on the F4E. now take 14.75*2 for the two 20mm cannons on the A10 and you get 29.5kg/second for those guns alone. the question is what would the burst mass of the GAU 30mm add to that?

This why the A-10 is my favorite plane, tanky and beeffy as fuck, insane main gun, can take so much damage but can make it back to base, such an amazing plane !

A Marine F-4 unit in Vietnam flew ground support missions with 3 20mm gun pods when the normal was one. So historically it is possible.

18:00 this reminds me of a certain incident that happened between an a-10 and some british armor

each 30mm AP projectile is around 400g, The GAU avenger fires at 3900rpm, that's 65 rounds a second which amounts to 26 KG/s with the GAU-8 alone, + the vulcans which fires 100 g projectiles at 6000 rpm that's an extra 20kg/s with both of em. so about 46 kg/s of burst mass with that loadout.

Me who flies this A-10C II (More modernised version of A-10A) in DCS World confirm that it CAN takeoff with full loadout and full fuel tank (while flying like a log, but it's possible) The same with the A-10A which is basicly the same aircraft but with old tech from 1972 There're no additional 20mm guns to attach as a loadout implemented in DCS World, but I don't think they are heavier than 2000 lb bombs that you can attach on all pylons and fly still while having a full fuel tank. I'm starting to think that if you attach a small light tank on top it WILL STILL FLY! (L3 for ex.)

Full depleted uranium round belt burst mass from the gau8 is 31.5~ lb/sec. Full HE belts however, is 54.1 lb/sec. Almost beats the phantom by itself!

gun pods are 1800 lbs each from Wiki, and the recoil would cause the pod to become more inaccurate as it would misalign on the pylon

So Context - before considering the gun, or the drum holding them and the chain linking - the 2000 rounds per gun of 20mm x 102mm weigh approx 1200lb in ammo per gun

Just image all the recoil with all those gun pods on the A-10 you might be able to take of by shooting

Unfortunately a fully loaded m61 weighs about 1,616lbs each. And 10 of them would weigh 16,160lbs, but the a10 can only carry 7260kg of external weight which is 1,6005lbs. So it'll have to be 9 guns not 10

The goal with the A-10 is to strike at medium altitude,like 1000meters for example and dive at the target in a long angle,like the hypotenuse of a triangle,with pratice,you will be able to fire a much closer range but never go low with that plane 😂

The 20mm Vulcan itself only weighs 250lbs . Not sure how much ammo and the weight of the pod it self but I'm sure you could do it for the weight it self.

It might be able to carry the weight of the Vulcans. But would it be able to fire them. The structural strain would be horrific and might drink too much electricity to run the cannons

unfortunately The GAU-8 itself weighs 620 pounds (280 kg), but the complete weapon, with feed system and drum, weighs 4,029 pounds (1,828 kg) with a maximum ammunition load. which means just those 2 vulcans on the under side is 4tonnes add two more ant thats 8 tonnes inculding ammo that your two little jet engines haft to lug around i'd love to see a A10aTB with maximum brrrrt but it wouldnt even be able to take off

Day 2. Phly you gotta try the bulldog. For 6.0 it's got high pen, good turret rotation speed, pretty fast, and it's just fun.

Its also not about total take-off weight, its about how much each hard-point can support. what does each of those pods weigh and how much power does each gun require to run? Remember that electrical power is a finite resource.

I'm pretty sure the force of those firing would make the plane stall, 1 gun on the A 10 cuts the thrust in half when it's firing.

This would be ideal for landing when your flaps are gone and you don't like using brakes

The Gatling that the A-10 is built upon is a 30mm cannon that fired depleted uranium HEAP rounds. The gatling pods were an answer to the Korean war plans that missiles would dominate the dogfight - not guns. Sooo, Russia gave the US some humble pie until the gun pods were made, shipped and mounted on the planes.
