tristani davituliani Actually it was made by the Fairchild Republic aviation company. It was designed and built by Americans. all 712 of them. Im pretty sure a few have been sold to allied countries.
and Russians do good AA weapons as well to shoot down american planes.....the a 10 is pretty powerful but its so slow it cant stand up for normal AA missiles
coll565 Tell that to Saddam ... Oh wait you can't... Its not a first strike aircraft... It moves in after air superiority has been achieved ....Which means air defense is at a minimal ...
This is a spectacular video!! As an American I do not take pride in the fact that these planes can unleash unsurpassed destruction and devastation. I take pride in the peace that they invoke and the countless innocent lives they have saved.
I like Rammstein as much as the next guy but one of the most beautiful things about the A-10 is the BRRRRRRRRRPPPP sound of freedom being unleashed when the canon is fired.
i've been to Gowan Air Force Base and 3 A-10C Warthogs flew over our Pass-In Review and did a break formation... it was one of the most beautiful things i have ever seen
Sometimes they would fly over and strafe the range when I was in S. Korea. The videos don't do the gun justice. It sounds more like a hammer drill set on high drilling into concrete. It's the same kind of feeling you get when you see a B-2 fly over you. They don't look that big on TV, but when this huge black thing flys over you, you get this feeling of impending doom. I love this video. I think I watch it about 3 times a day. Keep up the good work
I used to work A-10's at RAF Bentwaters, UK and Nellis AFB, Nevada. (Composite bases). The Gatling gun is unbelievable, it runs nearly the length of the plane. When the gun is removed, a prop has to be placed under the tail to keep the plane from flipping nose up. We used to take the empty shells when no one was looking, have them cut down and chromed for decorative shot glasses until command told us to stop that shit, lol.
The entire plain is designed and built around the front gun. A 30mm, 21 foot long gatlin gun weighing nearly 2 tons. A single round from an A-10 weighs 1 pound. A single barrell from this gatlin gun classifies as a CANNON. A second burst just sounds like a roar like from a ships horn.
I love these planes, I read on the defense industry daily that they are the only ones that the resistance will use against the machines, and that they have 65% survivability against hunter-killers. I mean... that's the good stuff! Go Connor!!!
The name of the A-10 is Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II and the nickname is "Warthog" and got it from the pilots and crews of the USAF attack squadrons who flew and maintained it.
The F-16 was designed in '74 and doesn't look retro. :-) The reason for the A-10's rugged good looks comes from aerodynamics. It was designed as purely subsonic which allows for the use of a straight wing. (straight wing + transonic flow = Mach tuck) Straight wings give terrific lift and incredible maneuverability, particularly at the low speeds required for close air support.
Not too damn may airframes that had a first production date in 1975, still flying, and expected to be "replaced" somewhere about 18 years from now. Yes, It's one Hell of an ugly plane... and also the most beautiful thing you'll ever see if you're on the ground in a combat arena and needing close air support. Props to Chris Lally for making this, and the choice of music is excellent. A fitting tribute to the Hog... even the powers of Congress were unable to effectively argue for it's demise.
The A-10 looks so cool. It's like what you see is what you get and it has. It is so honest in its form and so deadly in its fuction. Its is a plane mostly and best used when air superiority has already been achieved. To infantry and armor it is certain death.
"The A-10 Warthog, for when absolutely positivley everything must die." "what doen't kill you only makes you stronger, exept an a-10,and a-10 will fucking kill you."
30MM GAU-8 Avenger cannon with depleted uranium core in each round, bore safe. A fucking plane built around a gun. The A-10 itself is capable of carrying any type of bomb, missile, or rocket, including countermeasures and dummies to fool enemy radar. Take out one engine, the plane can still fly. Damned thing can land on its titanium belly without landing gear. Beautiful. Be a shame if/when they phase it out.
Its named the Thunderbolt II after the infamous P-47 Thunderbolt, which was renown for its durability in WWII. There was one case where a disabled P-47 was barely gliding home when a German Luft Ace spotted him and after raking the P-47 several times with machine gun fire and expending all of his ammunition, he came along side him and saluted him. The American pilot safely landed across the channel and stopped counting bullet holes after 200. He later became the 2nd best US ace pilot of WWII.
Maybe the Apache is better for sustained close aerial support, but if what's needed is sudden and decisive close air support then A-10 is the only way to go. It's essentially a flying cannon.
true. Unfortunately as far as I know there aren't any plans to produce any more of them so once the airframe gets past the point of being combat worthy, it's gone. And I agree its the best CAS system the US has. (really really wish they'd start producing them again)
In 1979 we were building a fence around an air base in germany, one of these things came right on top of us before we heard it,really cool plane, quiet and you couldnt tell if it was right side up or upside down because of the fake painted canopy on the bottom of the plane :]
always like the way this beast plane looks with those massive engine and the shark teeth they paint on the front! i dont care how sleek these newer jets look this one still looks just as leathal.
In my view the best quality of a-10 is the ability to survive a large amount of light weapon-fire and to be repaired in short periods of time,in "airfields" not too far from the frontline
the militarty has been trying to replace this thing for 30 years. the only problem is no one can come with a replacement. When you look at survivability, durability, manuverability and cost to maintain. the A-10 is the best there is. it can carry anything you want and need and it will stay right over head for a long time.
I think it's certainly the baddest-assed looking of all the modern planes.. has a certain retro look to it that is nice. Not as "refined" as the F-22 but it looks like its gets the job done.
this is a plane that does its job so well the united states (my home country. God bless it) has tried to replace it at least 5 times. but it still outperforms all of its rivals. they have done countless soft/hardware upgrades including upgrading its original 20mm gattling gun to a 30mm back in I think the early 2000s
Wow! I had no idea what I was photographing until I saw this awesome video. Someone commented that this plane is "sexy" -- yeah, totally agree! Thanks for this video! I've linked it to my site.
@vinnynl It was just updated a year or two ago with all new tracking and navi equipment. Also the 30mm shells are new made with aluminum casing vs steel to shave weight when fully loaded with 1150+ rounds of them for its front mount cannon. I see these fly pattern mission in Tucson daily, quite a nice site.
Yeah but the A-10 Thunderbolt II is pretty slow compared to other modern jet fighter however it packs some serious firepower. No wonder why its called The Tank-buster
@OUfootballAuthority That's some wicked stuff man, I'm a Marine Aviation Ordnanceman, I respect the A-10 more than a Cobra and I joined the Corps for the Cobra. Nice comment though, it gave me chills. lol
I believe the A10 has recieved a fairly long extension, and honestly, the F35 wont be bringing the same durability or the cannon to a battle. I'm not sure how the overall payloads compare, or the linger times, but the A10 is a champ at going low and slow, so it wouldnt surprise me a bit to see it stick around long after the F35 actually rolls out in large numbers.
Look up the Junkers Ju-285 A-1. You'd be suprised how many designs the Germans actually pioneered. The Ju-285 was just an early ancestor of the A-10. The similarity of the two make you wonder if the same guy designed both of them. The B-2 was another design that the US copied and improved from German technology capured after the war. A lot of people here hated on the Germans after the war, but the Germans contributed greatly to our superiority in the arms race with the Soviets Union.
The modernization of the A-10A into the A-10C included a new flight computer, new glass cockpit displays and controls, two new 5.5" color displays with moving map function and an integrated digital stores management system. Also included is a new data link and the ability to deploy smart weapons (JDAM) and ability to carry a targetting pod, which is NOT a radar. So NO, the A-10 does not carry a radar of it's own.
ya it was proven in a mission in the Gulf war when an A-10's wing was fired at and had a hole punched through the wing and he was able to switch the flight controls from automatic to manual while flying back to a base and landing safely
The bombs aren't armed until they leave the plane. Unlike WWII-era bombers where the bombs were all armed and they are mechanically released, they are attached electronically and when dropped, the electronics will detach it from the pylon and even then it isn't armed. It'll only arm when onboard sensors determine it is falling and has travelled significant distance from the plane that it won't get caught in the explosion.
Good to hear. That gives my mind some peace. I heard rumor that the US government planed to replace the A-10 with the F-35B. I will have to look around to find out which UCAV they plan to replace it with. I specialized UCAV might to the best replacement for this awesome bird. Thanks for the lead. Now I have to research which UCAV they have in mind.
i saw two of these flying very low over my school. there was one sentence repeating in my head: don't press the button! don't press the button! pleas don't press that button!
......the best asset the u.s has in terms of functionality, service life, maintainence and surviveability truelly a remarkable aircraft. Perfect for what it does. No ground attack /c.a.s aircraft like it
it's not a Vulcan, there are 3 main guns with multiple spinning barrels that i know of with about the same fire rate 1: the m-134 Minigun, shoots a 7.62mm bullets (ak-47 bullet)is usually mounted on jeeps or helicopters 2: the M-61 Vulcan, shoots 20mm bullets, is used in fighter jets and gun pods 3: the GUA-8 Avenger (the gun that the a-10 uses) shoots 30mm bullets and is only used in the A-10 So as you can see, this is the most powerful gun ever put in a plane and yes it can make a plane stall
Maybe SU-25 has slightly worse armor than A-10, but I think that both A-10 and SU-25 are so effective on their attacking objectives, like no other attack aircraft in the world.
Great video! Beautiful aircraft! Excellent choice of music! Not just because of the sound. The refrain of the song is: "Hier kommt die Sonne. Sie ist der allerhellste Stern von allen - und wird nie vom Himmel fallen." Translated: "Here comes the sun. It is the brightest star of all - and will never fall from the sky."
but don't forget that the low minimal speed is one of the best things about the a-10. if you fly at mach 2.35 and have to aim your gun at a tank ... good luck with that. but a higher maximal speed would still be an advantage.
This plane is for close air support and tank killing. It's really effective and can take heavy punishment unlike standard fighter planes. Thought it could be changed with f 35.
Agreed. Basic features like the gun and the wing design (high lift at low speeds) could be kept. But lessons from the F-35 could be integrated, like jet engines (should be two) with the ability to vector thrust vertically, so the plane can hover and land vertically. All integrated into a very stable airframe, that can carry lots of payload and fly low and slow.
Hmmmm, okay. Right. Somehow an A-10 successor should be able to be deployed from a carrier or a very short and badly maintained or improvised runway. That's just a very fitting feature to it's mission profile. Maybe it doesn't have to be full VTOL, but a pivoting nozzle, that allows for very short take offs. I know the Osprey is crap, but I think now a few lessons have been learned for future projects.
The song is one of the German group "Ramstein"! It is called: "Hier kommt die Sonne" - in englich: "Here comes the sun". Ramstein is well known in the US - I think! But also some words to the video. Awesome pics and the music is a good choice. 5 Points!!!
The F-35 is in no way to replace the A-10. Why? Its purpose. The F-35 is used for Air-To-Air Combat, Protection, and is a Stealth Capable aircraft. The A-10, is used for Close Combat Support, tank killing, taking down heavy infantry, etc, without getting shot down. Plus its ton cheaper, (A-10; 11 Million, F35; Approx 83 Million) And its pretty damn good at it. This is the UH-60 of Aircraft, Reliable, loved by many, and just like the Blackhawk, It'll serve us for long to come.
nope, they made the thunderbolt C version, up to date in every way, of course more expensive to operate more aircraft but originally the f35 was meant to replace the f16
@rolandtran10 Its a great new addition to the multiple airforces that are buying in but aside from its "stealth" capabilities that only partially prevent lock on, it only really rivals an F-16 and isn't anywhere near as good as an F-22.
I served with the 81 TFW during Operation Desert Storm and I can tell you that the only thing the Iraqi tank commanders feared more than Saddam was the sound of A-10's in the distance.
Not at all. My father in law used to work at the plant that built the wings and components for the B1 bomber. A lot of the things that we use are of our own designs. I guess what I'm saying is that we took a lot of inspiration from German designs. If the Ju-285 and the A-10 were people, you would think that they were related because of the similarities.
The thing that makes the A-10 so good is that its SLOW... the F-35 like any other fast air is in and out before it can really do much. I think they need to "tweek" the design, make a new airframe by all means but keep some key features of the A-10 i.e the GAU-8 and its ability to carry huge amounts of ordanance.
