The Most OVERPOWERED Warplane to ever Exist: A-10 Warthog
During World war 2, the whole concept of warfare was changed and all sides of the conflict found out about the importance of air force and air support and the role it’s going to play in the future.
Here’s also where the first true CAS aircraft were born - a close air support aircraft. On the Soviet side, this was Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik.
It became one of the best-known aircraft of the war and the most produced plane in the history of aviation. Over 40k built. Crazy stuff.
On the other side was - and now you’re all probably thinking about the Stuka - well its not the Stuka, at least not yet, but rather Henschel Hs-129. This was a true tank killer of the war and some of the ideas were borrowed from it in the creation of the A-10.
For example, this aircraft was defined by its boom stick. Normally armed with 30mm cannon or twin 20mm ones, it could pack a serious punch and destroy almost any armoured vehicle at the time of its early to mid deployment.
The Germans went on to install the 75mm full auto variant of Pak-40 cannon on Hs-129B-3 by the end of the war, but it proved to be very difficult to operate, although extremely effective, being able to destroy virtually any tank of the era.
Now we get to the Stuka. Have you ever asked yourself what does Stuka actually mean?
Well, it’s short from Sturz kamp Flugzeug which could be translated roughly to “dive bomber” in English. But this is not a German lesson, so let’s move on!
The Junkers Ju-87 proved to be another legend of the war and it was actually Hans Ulrich Rudel, the best dive bomber pilot of the war, credited with over 500 kills on the ground who is interesting for our story.
Although an amazing pilot, Rudel was a shitty guy and a Nazi, so we don’t want to glorify him, rather talk about his feats and how that affected the A-10 development.
It’s the Ju-87G variant that’s interesting for us because it was developed, specifically as anti-tank aircraft and it was Rudel himself who suggested mounting twin 37mm cannons in underwing pods because of the previous success of the 20mm cannons against the Soviet tanks.
He flew this variant of the aircraft in the battle of Kursk and had a lot of success in destroying Soviet armour.
Now the story of direct Rudel’s influence on the A-10 design is a bit of a grey territory and we’d like to stick to the facts here, some say that he actually participated in the development, but that was never confirmed.
The only thing we can talk about with a dose of certainty is what Pierre Sprey, one of the consultants on the design and development of the A-X program which gave birth to A-10 said and that is how the program was largely influenced by the experiences from both the Vietnam war and Rudel’s with the Stuka during the Second world war.
It was deducted that a powerful gun and robustness in combat scenarios would need to be the basis for this new design, which early Hs-129s lacked because of the exposed fuel tanks and so did Ju-87 to a degree.
It’s also interesting to note how the A-10s design has almost an inverted gull wing, just like the Ju-87 and the F4U Corsair did, which helps the pilot have better visibility of the ground, allow for the larger external bomb load and carry a big gun
Thats right, lets talk about the thing which made this aircraft so popular - the GAU-8.

I believe during the first gulf war, after a fatal friendly fire incident by the a-10 on British armour, the UK cancelled a planned armoured assault on the basis that the a-10 would probably destroy more of their number than the Iraqis, allowing republican guard tank units to escape. All because the unfortunate a-10 pilots had to use nothing but binoculars to identify targets on the ground.

I agree, but it's fighting a losing battle in terms of it becoming increasingly vulnerable as infantry based anti air firepower becomes more lethal. Alot of western supplied military gear in ukraine for example will end up captured and turned against us to some degree via the black market in the future. I suspect even the most up to date a-10 Could not deal with a stinger or star streak up it's arse.

Pierre Sprey (1937-2021) was an interesting person. He liked to use his position as "I technically worked on the plane" to land interviews where, for a paycheck, he would sing the praises of successful USAF fighters as the product of him and his so called "fighter mafia" group's genius; despite the fact that they were only data consultants and actually had almost nothing to do with the designs themselves.

I find it interesting the more I hear about how the fighter mafia can get away with proclaiming they did stuff. When they really didn't. I feel like they have like 0 real respect or ties within actually US military, but they are so good at spinning things to make themselves seem important, when they are basically just stealing credit. I think Lazerpigs vid on it is very interesting. Though I still like the A10, I do see how deeply flawed the thing is, but like the brrrtt is such a dank meme. And CAS I think still has some interesting niche, but in some ways its already fulfilled by other Airplanes and helicopters. But who knows, for some reason its still in service so maybe there is some reason the Airforce likes it... Other than that they don't wanna give up CAS role to Army.
@robertharper3754

@@phoenixyo9987, the A-10 does provide one hell of a boost to morale when you're on the ground, and while other planes could do the same job for low intensity warfare, there is something about hearing/feeling the brrrrt that scares the hell out of our opponents. Too many in the Air Force still think you can win the majority of a war from the air, and way too many have disdain for the other services, especially anyone that touches the ground.

LazerPig's videoes however, are so hyperbolic to the point of being as bad as pop history. He even constantly talks down to his audience and call them wrong pre-emptively. I would HIGHLY caution you from thinking he's giving you the ""real"" story, he's merely just entertainment. In his T-34 video, he makes the dubious claim about war "when quality met quantity, quality has won every single time" and I can only guess he's makes such a bold and easily disproven claim because he just wants to bash on the T-34.

Hate to break it to you, but more often than not, history is _not_ written by the victors, and sometimes even the vanquished or outdated get more editorial authority than they deserve- LazerPig's A10/Pierre Sprey videos, and Potential History's videos on post-Nazi military narratives can better elaborate. The point is, what was useful in the distant past is not nearly so useful now. The Avenger gun is not the best asset in a 'danger close' CAS situation- with a 'splash zone' measured in tens of meters, as LazerPig put it, 'a little touch on the stick could be the difference between a medal, a court martial, or a war crime' to paraphrase. And the 'conventional' wisdom of what makes an aircraft useful in supporting ground troops (low, slow, armored) have more to do with _lacking_ situational awareness than anything else- i.e. before Radar, advanced optics and infrared. Now, we have technology that keeps an aircraft far away from ground based anti-air threats and still precisely target and kill enemies, especially armor, while (hopefully) avoiding collateral damage. The alternative (A10) method is spray and pray by comparison. And even if an A10 is 'durable' by today's standards, even without being shot down, it may still be 'down' for repair, and that's when it's not supporting the troops' front. More of our military doctrine is based around avoiding getting shot at in the first place.' That's not even accounting for the potential 'inflation' of combat effectiveness for lack of awareness and because 'military reformists' want some media attention for being contrarian- that's beyond my purview.

During one of my trips to Polk for JRTC my squad was getting picked apart by an A10. One of the rules of the game was the ability to call in the OCs ( think referee for those who have never played US Army laser tag) for a silent kill. If you could show the means to preform a kill and describe step by step how you would do it you got the kill and the OC would pull out the god gun. We were pinned down in a ditch in the middle of a field in the middle of the woods. The field was full of the largest murder of crows I have ever seen. I called in my OC and told him I wanted a silent kill of the A10. I told him I would wait until the next pass of the plane. He was flying a tree top height and had no direct sight until he cleared the edges of the woods. When I knew he was committed to the run I would run out into the field dumping my full belt of 249 into the murder ( for those who see the irony I swear I’m not making it up) It would scare the birds up into his flight path. There is ample proof of birds bringing down planes. Thousands of them will bring down an A10 at 30 feet. The OC refused to give me the kill. When asked why he told me that no A10 pilot would ever believe that he was brought down by a bird. As he walked away I heard him call off the pilot for the rest of the day. I should have been giving the credit for my kill.

I've loved the A10 for many years, since the early 90s when I had posters of it on my walls as a kid, and made airfix models of it. I guess I've always loved the ugly duckling, but I didn't fully appreciate the amazing engineering of this legend until I did my engineering degree, and more recently, started to play DCS. It's totally renewed my love of this beast, so hard to kill it. It is literally "the flying tank". The designers deserve to go down in history. If only there was an updated version, more powerful efficient engines, greater wing lift with lower drag, etc, besides the obvious avionics upgrades, this design would live a long, long life.

As an A-10 support personnel, your rate of fire is technically correct but never used in combat at that rate. Concerning depleted uranium, It takes a massive amount of rounds stacked together to even consider a radiation placard to be displayed. Drones cannot strafe a convoy, A-10's can. Drones do not suppress troop movements, A-10's can. Drones are snipers, A-10 can snipe and inflict mass damage/casualties.

Now I love the A-10, but I can't ignore some of its shortcomings in modern combat. The Warthog is spectacular at tank busting - circa 1975. In 2022 the landscape of the battlefield has changed quite a bit. We've moved on from armored advances across rural fields to close quarters urban combat, and the A-10 just isn't as effective in said role. Let's start off with what everybody knows about the warthog: the gun. The GAU-8 30mm rotary cannon is a powerful tank buster, but its main shortcoming is its accuracy. In combat you might not have time to line up a shot because every enemy in the area will be throwing everything and the kitchen sink at you. So the GAU-8 is designed to pepper an area the size of a football field with several dozen rounds and hope you land enough on target to knock it out. In urban combat, the collateral from that level of inaccuracy is, frankly, unacceptable. Another thing is the famed durability. Most people don't realize that the all the redundancies and protection is so that the pilot can get back behind friendly lines if and when taking a critical hit, not to sit above the battlefield and absorb hits from every artillery piece they chuck at you like a tank. The final thing is after forty years of service, new technologies have come out that render the warthog outmatched. Newer radars can track low flying targets much easier. Man-portable SAMs are a lot more common. AA artillery has gotten bigger and more accurate. The 2K22 Tunguska was literally designed to counter the A-10 Warthog! I blame the media for all the hype around this aircraft. But the hard truth is since the mid-2000s, practically every confirmed tank, bunker, and facility kill the A-10 has it got with guided munitions. Even in rural combat precision weapons have shown to be more effective than the gun. Now don't take this the wrong way. The A-10 is my favorite combat plane of all time, but it's because I love it so much that I go hard on it. Sometimes tough love is the most sincere. I could continue on this rant for a while, but I know none of you want to spend three hours reading an overly detailed and long-winded RU-vid comment. (But if you do I'd recommend Laserpig's videos; we agree on many of the same points.)

The gun was tested against outdated tanks from the late 50s back when it was being introduced and out of ten tanks managed one hard kill and three tanks damaged. All four tanks would have been brought back to full service in under a day. Consequently, because of that test, there has never been an A-10 sold to foreign customers, despite plenty of effort and pressure in the 80s.

The insurgents know it's coming because the Americans do their best to bury themselves in the dirt so they don't get caught in it's fire(it has an absolutely colossal splash zone on the gun) so they take cover too. It basically does nothing other than pause the fighting for a minute.

When your primary mode of attack is a strafing run, and your guys are a bit too close to the target, you are going to hit your own guys. The A-10 is best used to punch out enemy troops and armor on "the other hill", not engaged in direct relatively close combat. Anything closer and you will want something that can take its time, albeit still at a distance, like an Assault Helicopter

It could be argued that the US military decided to keep the A-10 in service indefinitely due to the morale boost it gives. The morale of soldiers is extremely important in combat, and the A-10s reputation as a “beacon of hope” is a massive boost to the soldiers in combat. A drone doesn’t provide the same feeling. Maybe I’m wrong tho, I’m no expert, just some twat on the internet.

can we please get rid of the A-10 shitting Hippo? why the A-10 was obsolete years ago: the gun is incredibly inaccurate, with only 80% of bullets getting within 30 meters of the target, not a good thing when you are firing very close to friendly units. It also can't penetrate the armor of the T-72, T-90, and T-14 tanks its "tankiness" is not able to stand up to AA guns built after the 80s-90s, and isn't fast or stealthy enough to avoid MANPADs, which deal more than enough damage to take out an A-10 Its situational awareness is literally just binoculars. No radar, no IFF system, and minimal communication equipment this has led to the A-10 being the uncontested king of friendly fire incidences, famously accidentally ripping apart a group of (allied) british APCs Its no wonder that Ukraine is refusing to take our A-10s
