A 1950s Olympia SM4 typewriter - this is what I will write my next book on!

I recently took delivery of a 1952 Olympia SM4 typewriter, which was restored to almost new condition by Colum Nolan, "The Magic Typer" from Kilkenny. I am writing my next book on it. Why use a typewriter in 2020? Watch my video to find out.
(I say it’s an SM3 in the video. This is what I was initially told, but we later found out that it’s an SM4. The difference between the two is almost unnoticeable!)

First off, what a beauty your Olympia SM3 is! Second, I wrote my last mystery suspense novel on manual typewriters, (Olympia SM7 and SM9 alternatively). The outline and first draft I did on these machines, and after that, I was enjoying the process so much that I wrote the complete second draft on these typewriters as well. It was finally by the third draft that I transferred the manuscript into Word docs, because by then I was ready for the benefits that come with that. But I must say, after this wonderful experience, I can't imagine ever doing book length, early draft work on a laptop ever again! I hope your experience is equally enjoyable!

I'm doing the same thing. I'm alternating between four manual typewriters (two Royals, a Smith Corona, and an Olivetti) for my next book. It's a fun process. I'm actually writing MORE because I'm not distracted by doing "research" on the internet in the middle of my typing. Good luck!

Good luck with crafting your next book on this beauty, Anthony! Many great works were written by hand, but also many masterpieces were made on a typewriter. Great poem too! Top-shelf stuff!

I guess I am a bit of a strange one in that I love old typewriters! There is just something about them...the sound the feel as you watch your words form on the paper. You cannot get this from a computer screen and keyboard.

Yes indeed. I've come a long way since then! I now have about a dozen manual typewriters and five Selectrics, plus a few Brother electronics. I estimate that I have written about half a million words since I made this video! These days the Imperial 66 is my favourite manual machine, while my green Selectric III is getting plenty of action too!

@@mythicalireland oh my, 5 Selectrics. You are a Selectric heavy hitter! I am still at around 50 typewriters or so, with a dream that I should eventually re-home some of these. For now I enjoy them, as it seems you surely do too.

Good choice! Whether the regular portable SM line or the compact line, all Olympia machines I've owned have been superb typers, certainly better in feel than any of our American-made manual portables. I owned the SM7 and the SM9 along with the SG3...

Nice typewriter. I have a 1959 SM4 in very much the same colour, that mystical green-gray nuance. I love this typewriter, probably the best one of my 15 old typewriters of different make... I too fiddle with the tought of writing the first draft of a novel on one of the typewriters... Hope it goes well for you! All the best from Hugo over in Norway🇳🇴

At this point, I have written over 56,000 words of my new book on the SM4, but I have to admit that in the past few months my pace has slowed dramatically. This is not because I don't like using it - quite the contrary. It's just that I find it difficult to get the time to use it! It is a beautiful machine, and a wonderful joy to use. Enjoy yours!

Woody Allen has the same Olympia SM3 typewriter that he purchased when he was 16 years old. To this day, he still uses it and wrote all his stories, which includes his movies, jokes, books. He bought it in New York and the salesman told him that it would out last him. He is right. I, myself have the same one as you. Olympia SM4. Tabs are easy. Just hit the plus sign where you want the tab set. To clear it, hit the minus sign. Made in Germany. It’s the Mercedes of typewriters. I love mine.❤

I've bought 2 green Olympias recently, both the SM3 and SM4. One has the cursive and one is Italicized font. Spent a lot on them $1k for the both, but worth it. I also spent $50 for one that reminded me of Grandma's Smith and Corona Sterling, and $25 for same brand Super Speed. Both were in mostly working order. One still needs a little work. Funny thing is I plan on using $25 one as the work horse.

Also when you use a typewriter you can type anyway you like there is nobody else to criticize you for it you can just use it the way you feel comfortable with and free of your thoughts and no pressure like the computer or distractions

I rather use the typewriter over the computer and I have a few 1940s typewriters it a lot more comfortable to use than the computer it’s also good to have a typewriter in case if the power goes down it will be good to have a typewriter

I know this is a year old already. That I hope it worked out for you. I love using my typewriter. And I have an Olympia SM3 just like you. They are great machines. I will make one suggestion to you. You need to learn how to type properly. Pecking like you're doing, will take a lot longer. But if you improve your typing skill. You'll notice how much faster it will go.

Understand what you say about the to-ing and fro-ing on a computer keyboard. It does ruin the thought process and affects creativity. Dont think I could do what you are doing, however. Good luck with it. 73 joe vk3bki

Hi Joe. It's definitely a different way of doing things. I suppose one could say it's perhaps a little bit like CW versus phone, or CW versus digi modes! I am a big fan of CW, although I like using phone too, and I dabble in digi modes. Since I started the new book, I have found my output to be quite prolific. I have 11,000 words of the new book written, in just over a week. I think that's my highest word-count output ever (this is my eighth book). So it's working well for me. And it's nice to have a machine manufactured in 1952 and to be able to use it as it was intended. All the best. 73 de EI2KC.
