I immediately clicked through and bought these books. Then I told my husband it could be worse. I could have impulse ordered a bunch of chicks. (We live on the 14th floor, in the middle of the city.) 😂

You inspired our 9 year old. After watching this video and "sleeping on it" he told me this morning that he wants to start collecting a shop full of old time tools, so that he can build his home the old fashioned way. So fun! Thank you for inspiring our 9 year old son!!

Thanks for sharing this tidbit about Eric Sloane... strangely enough we share the same passion for this author although we live in different countries. I have a copy of "An Age of Barns" that I love and cherish. Like you I like to reminisce on pioneer life before modern technology and modern agriculture took over our lives. I keep thinking : Men knew how to grow food, raise a family and manage animals without electricity and modern technologies... Although electricity is a commodity that we can hardly do without, I think Eric Sloane's books are a great source of inspiration to help us rethink our way of living and get back to basics so we can live a simple life and enjoy our daily blessings.

I too am interested in old homesteads. I worked as a Game Warden in Wisconsin in the late 70's and would find old homesteads way back in the woods. Old homes falling apart but I would find a rose bush still surviving in what was probably the front yard. You could just imagine the woman of the house out doing laundry and the children playing about. Love it!

hi Art! i love hearing about these books, and the story about the pear tree is especially dear to my heart because my family has been here since the mid 1600s before the British took over. they were farmers in what is now downtown Albany and Ministers in the very first Dutch Protestant church. i grew up in Watervliet on the Hudson River just north of Albany one of the oldest Dutch settled areas. all of these places are so familiar and the history is fascinating. Schuyler, Rensselaer, and Stuyvesant are all common names around here and hard to wrap your tongue around. lol the trick is to ignore the u so it sounds more like sky or sty. i have never seen those books but now im on the hunt for them. i may be able to locate them through the NYS Museum or a small Dutch heritage shop in Albany. but im wondering where you found them. they seem an amazing resource for any homesteader trying to recover the lost art of living. thanks for sharing them.

it is really an interesting area to have grown up in. from Albany to Saratoga, so much of what has happened historically here is how the US became what it is. im such a history monkey from family day trips to places and am so grateful to my parents for giving me these hands-on history lessons.

Wow! I think that you, like me, just might have been very happy to have lived with our families 100-200 years ago when all those amazing things were commonplace, and when people placed more value on a person's inventiveness and work ethic. I can't imagine a more perfect collection of books. Thank you SO much for the recommendations, and for sharing your thoughts and some of your favorite tools and barns from the books. -Trent

We still have an old *sod* house on the property. Sadly the house is falling down. But there truly isn't much to be done about it falling apart. Nature gives and it takes. The Abrahamson's built the original sod house when they came over from Norway and started farmsteading on the land. Now they run angus & crops on the land. In 14 months my husband & I will be moving up there from South Dakota to help on the land. His uncle currently is living there alone and wants us to come out there to help. I look forward to it. Absolutely wonderful video Art, Thank you for sharing your outlook & the various books. I love books, old barns, old tools. Old things, I think I was born in the wrong century. =) 🌱Be Blessed 🌼

You should go the The Henry Ford: a museum that was Henry Ford's collection including the Henry Ford Museum which has everything from agricultural tools (pre-industrial revolution through the advances in technology), cars (of course), trains, household items; and Greenfield village which was Henry Ford's literal collection of historic buildings that he had meticulously taken apart and reassembled in this village. It is a really nice documentation of US history with living history aspects (the Eagle Tavern, which is set up as a working Tavern where you can eat, but in the setting of the early 1800's in Michigan; a working print shop, potter, glass blower, etc). It's worth the trip to Detroit just to see this Museum. It's also worth spending multiple days exploring the different parts of the museum and village. I was lucky enough to be able to take a Michigan History class (from my dad, who taught for the local community college) that took place at the museum/village and was able to go every Saturday for a 15 week college semester.
