This entire project required approximately 500 hours of CAD work and a few houndred hours of 3D printing spaced out over approximately 18 months. Unfortunately there was one false start, which basically required a redesign of the animatronics and re-printing almost everything.
Saturn V model by Lego.
Gantry and base by Farscape scaled to the 1/110 scale Lego model and modified for reasonable 3D printing at the
smaller scale and inclusion of the custom animatronic linkages, motors, and controllers.
Two servos handle the service arms, one servo rotates the top crane with threads to lift the sway arm, one servo
retracts the crew walkway, one servo moves all eight gantry arms, and the Saturn V is lifted by three stepper motor
linear screws.
Control code runs on an Arduino Uno with a stepper motor controller, an I/O expansion board, a sixteen channel
servo controller, and an audio board.
The actual model plays back the count down audio from the Apollo 11 launch. The music and the Go/No Go track
in this movie were taken from the Apollo 13 movie.
