In this video I rebuild a 40 year old Citizen LCD watch, reference number 8943-083658 also commonly referred to as the "Jet Boy", or "Robot Face".
Using an Ebay purchased donor watch, I source out a part which I need for the watch I'm trying to fix. Will this end in triumph or disaster? Join me and find out!

I was always told never to place stator in ultrasonic. Just use the solution in a small jar and let it soak.

That may be true, though I've never had a problem, but don't take my word for it. Mind you, I only place it in the ultrasonic for 2 minutes!

I had an ana-digi watch ⌚️ much like that, many years ago. It was a black ⚫️ plastic one, with a vinyl band. The numeral markers glowed in the dark, and the crystal 🔮 was glass. The watch ⌚️ retailed for $49.99, but I don't remember the brand name. It was a pretty 😍 decent watch. Please keep 🙏 the good 👍 watch ⌚️ videos 📹 coming. Just subbed!! Your friend, Jeff!!

Really great video, thanks for sharing your knowhow with the world. I'm new to watch restoration and am trying to focus on these ana-digi/digi-ana repairs for now. I'd like to ask you two questions; When you press that new Chrystal "glass" in place, is there no risk of it cracking? Or are they just so very sturdy? I want to replace the glass in my 30-5511, but I don't have your press tool, what is it called? I'll see if I can order it on ebay. Next question; Replating. Do you know of any person or shop in EU that I can send watches to be replated? I don't think I can make a lab for doing this in my home. Thanks a lot again!

Hello Ton and thanks for your kind words. For your first question, these crystals are actually glass on the these Citizen models and are very fragile. There is a huge risk of cracking/breaking them, therefore a crystal press is necessary if you want to achieve a good seal and an even fit. You really have to be very careful doing it, even when using a press. Ensure your crystal and your case are completely flat and do it very slowly. An extra layer of protection via a plastic bag would be a good idea. If you can, order 2 or 3 crystals and there's a large possibility that you'll end up cracking one the first time around. For your second question, I'm sure there are many places in the EU which offer the replating service, but since I'm in Canada, I'm not aware of any in your region. I get mine done in Canada, (Montreal to be precise), at a place called "ReplateIt". You can find them by going to www.replateit.com. They offer a very good service at a very reasonable price. Just be aware that your case has to be finalized and ready for replating as that's all they do. This means all sanding and filing and removal of any scratches is your responsibility. They just plate the part. Hop this helps and good luck!

Thanks for this video. I just acquired an "Omni" Ana-Digi with a Citizen 8940a movement in perfect condition but not running. It took me awhile to figure out how to remove the case back to remove the battery. Wish I would have found your video first! Then I couldn't remember how to orient the case back cover over the movement but your video at 1:05 helped me to determine that the "half circle insulation area" (if that's what you call it) underneath the cover plate goes opposite of the battery. Is this right? At first I thought maybe it should cover the battery to insulate the battery from the case back. My 8940a also has a little spring that you show at 42:40. What the purpose the spring? Hopefully I can get the watch fully functional with only a new battery which I have to source the 1120 (391) battery. I may be back for more questions. Thanks.

@grumpyswatchrestorations Год назад
Hi there! That 'half circle" is the piezo speaker responsible for the beeping sound of your watch. The little spring is the contact between the positive terminal on your logic board and the above mentioned piezo speaker. The "half circle" part of that speaker, meaning the thicker part should be the one making contact with the little spring, so that's how you position the case back. Good luck!

@@grumpyswatchrestorations Thanks. Great information. I'm excited to see if I can get this watch functional. I was able to find instructions for this movement online. Hopefully a new battery does the trick. Cheers.

@@grumpyswatchrestorations Hi. After installing new 391 battery in 8940 the digital portion is working but the analog is not. I'm also missing the battery strap you mention at 43':40". Just wondering if I need some sort of battery strap to make a connection from the (+) battery to the quartz circuit?
@mtbbiker6401
@mtbbiker6401 Год назад
Okay, the analog hands would not move when trying to set the time with the pusher. I freed up the gears. Now I can set the time using the pusher on the side of the case, but the hands still do not move on their own. Since I can move the hands with the pusher, do you think the quartz circuit is okay and the problem is more mechanical in nature? Also how does the minute hands move normally? Does it move in minute increments or slowly like a regular quartz? Should I hear a "tick" for every second? Actually it looks like I am getting some movement of the minute hand but very slow so maybe the drivetrain is gunked up.

Do you still buy these watches? I have one that is still in good shape. Suddenly it stopped working. I thought it was the battery, I installed a new one and nothing. No body wants to fix it and I don't know what the problem is. But I always loved that watch. I think you may use it for parts or repair it. It is in good shape. By the way. It is a very good video.
@grumpyswatchrestorations

Thanks! I don't buy them. I have all the ones I want which have been restored. Your watch could exhibit a couple of issues. Previous battery leaked and damaged the logic board, logic board may exhibit damage from age, the battery contacts are corroded, etc... Very few watchmakers want to touch these watches these days due to lack of parts. Cheers.

@grumpyswatchrestorations
@grumpyswatchrestorations 2 года назад
Hi Ross. Getting these fixed is pretty hard these days as most watchmakers don't want to go near them due to lack of parts. I use parts from broken donor watches I buy on ebay. With regards to your watch , it all depends on what the issue is. If it's a battery spill, new logic board for sure and that's just to start with. You could have a bad LCD, bad coil and so on. At the very least you just need service with cleaning and oiling. There are Citizen groups on FB, and someone may be willing to take on the job. I'm just too tied up at the moment to work on viewer's watches. Good luck!
