According to the municipality, between eighty and one hundred millimeters of rain fell in Enschede on Sunday evening.
"An exceptional downpour that happens once every 500 years," said the municipal water resources expert.
No sewage system or water storage facility can compete with this amount of water.
As a result, streets in a significant part of the city were heavily flooded.
In the Stroinkslanden district, people couldn't believe their eyes; the pond in the neighborhood center was overflowing.
A bit further, in the small square of Spoolderlanden, people are still talking about the torrential rain that poured down.
"The entire square was underwater; it was somewhat surreal," one resident noted.
Not only was the amount of rain exceptionally large, but also the short period in which it fell contributed to the chaos.
"In half an hour, 45 minutes, 70 millimeters had already fallen," the expert continued.
This is four times more than sewage systems in the city can handle at once.
In Enschede, many areas still have a sewage system designed for only 20-millimeter rain.
The rapid accumulation of water overwhelmed the city's drainage infrastructure completely.
Emergency services were immediately dispatched to assist with the widespread flooding.
Residents reported significant water damage to both homes and businesses throughout the city.
Cars were submerged in several neighborhoods, causing extensive damage.
