Thats the point of the handicap, to get away from Net Time, and only show handicap race time. So 5K net + handicap time = 60 minutes. The runners finish either slightly faster or slightly slower than 60 minutes. The idea is that in theory, everyone crosses the finish at the same time but slower runners tend to fair better
Great content :-) Enjoyable to watch. You guys did amazing and definitely need a rematch. I'd suggest doing a rematch over the 10K distance. For fun making it a 5K out and 5K back on the same route. You'll pass each other at some point to get a glimpse of where you might be according to the others. Thus give Anna opportunity for redemption. Being an ultrarunner the 10K might be more in her favor.
This was brilliant. I don't understand how Sarah can a pb while talking and singing all of the time. Like everyone else I would like to see the times that were run. Everyone looked like they were running far faster than their predicted times apart from Anna played did it properly by sticking to her predicted time!
In the first half you should still be able to do those things. Otherwise you will slow down after that. But there are some individual differences for sure
Love Anna’s never quit attitude, Sarah’s always positive even when it’s not attitude, and Andy’s humility. I totally identified with Jess as she ran. (Haven’t finished the video yet, so I’ve no idea if anyone has caught anyone yet.)
Well done Jess. Great effort by everybody even with Andy's sneaky extra floppy handicap. I can relate to Anna. I'd be the last one home because I told the truth about my time. 😉 😇
This is brill. Our club is about to do their 4th one with 32 participants. We use each participant’s best recent time (approximately the last 3 months and accurate to the second). We then set them off in intervals according to their times. A spreadsheet is really useful. We award gold, silver and bronze medals to keep for the first three to cross the finish line. We use local parkrun courses. We have timekeepers just like parkrun, so we record everyone’s gun time. We also know their handicap start time, so can also provide their chip time too. Again, a spreadsheet is really useful.
Best video yet! Loved how Jess held it together to stay ahead, Sarah wasn't trying hard enough because she could still sing, Andy was so competitive & flipping quick but best of all was Anna getting stropy! Love you Anna!
They should definitely do this again, but everyone has to do what Ana did and run to their allocated times, so that the finish will become a perfect sprint finish, and they all finish together!!! Good concept, but they didn’t quite do it properly to get the Hollywood finish!!! 😍😍. Do it again @runningchannel
Can’t believe you’re keeping us all hanging with the results! You all did so well, and big up Jess for pushing through and celebrating all the way. Hope I can be that happy doing a 5k in any weather, let alone that weather, some day!
You have to do this again. We do this every month in my running club. First to pass the finish line get 1.000 point, and for every second you are slover you get 1 point less. At the end of the season point are counted, and a winner is found.
Great video to watch. Amazing how when given some ‘prey’ to hunt down, some of us are motivated to run much faster than predicted! Well done all four of you. Like some others have commented, more handicap races like this would make for some very entertaining viewing
Handicap races are fun! You all did great. I loved Anna's look over her shoulder saying "I thought I heard him". A Zombie run through the mud at its finest. Wonderful content.
I'm the handicapper and timekeeper for our running club handicap series - 8 races, March to October, over 3.4 miles of cross-country route. We regularly 20% of the membership racing, and start times are adjusted monthly to pull back the faster finishers and bring up slower ones. The mad sprint for the finish line is great fun, I have to use a GoPro to ensure everyone is kept in the right order !
We did this with our club and a lot of people seriously underestimated their times. Net result is that when i finished (10 seconds off my predicted!) most people had been finished for a while (in some cases a few minutes!). When we do it this year again, we will use the times from last year as a check
The waiting around to start reminded me of when I was on a triathalon relay team, and so I waited around 90 minutes in the heat for my biker to come in and send me off on my first 10K race ever.
What a fantastic way to race! My wife just picked up running after being diagnosed with lupus. Right now she runs about half the speed that I do, but this will provide a great way for us to compete! Thank you Running Channel!!
Loved this and have suggested we do this at our running club! Am i the only one who wonders how tall everyone is looking at the opening shot with you all lined up !
Totally agree with Anna, handicaps only work second time round when you've all got actual times rather than comfortable guesses! But, devils advocate, the joy of handicaps is giving everyone a competitive race to push themselves and it seemed to work for the other three
Great fun. As ever: a big thank you. Was doing something similar during the lockdown. A bunch of us would turn up on Southampton Common on Saturday mornings (8:30ish) and, socially distanced, give each other head starts based more on whim than calculation. We usually finished within minutes of each other for a socially distanced chat, before shuffling off to home and isolation. . As for a challenge: it occurred to me whilst watching the video that you could set up an event between yourselves and inviting other running vlog hosts to race whilst all recording with their Gopro cameras. In the fashion of the famous Monty Python "Whicker Island" sketch. It might be necessary to script it but, given a lot of thought, I think the idea has potential. For creating utter chaos if nothing else.
We do a handicap race in my running club, I love it so much! I came second I. A race once, granted I was the slowest person there that day so I was out first, but it was so fun to get to sprint against one of the faster runners!
I forced myself away from the comments until the end, and I'm so glad I kept the suspense!! Congrats everyone! That looks like a great way to get a PB and do some speed work with faster friends! Rematch!! Maybe with hills, or street lights, etc!
Spill the beans and 'fess up! - we are ALL desperate to see the times you all got. This looked even more fun to take part in than it was to watch it, good stuff!
I totally agree with Anna. I consider myself a pro at predicting times - 2 months ago I put down 10:40 for a 3km and ran 10:40.51, then 2 weeks later put down 5:05 for a 1500m and ran 5:05.9, then 3 weeks ago put down 18:20 for 5km and ran 18:20.9. That's all on the track though so I'm not sure how I would fare in the mud - like Jess said I would probably be sliding more than running!
Handicap races are great fun, though the odds are always stacked against the faster runners. A 1% improvement for a 40 minute 5k runner is 24 seconds, for a 20 minute 5k runner it is 12 seconds so if the 40 minute runner betters their target, the 20 minute runner needs to double their improvement in percentage terms to match them. I've never finished higher than mid-pack, even the time when I got lost and only did 4.8k!
Fantastic content as ever guys! Thoroughly enjoyed this video and got to give a shout out to however was manning the drone for some brilliant shots 👍🏼 Congratulations Jess on the win 🏆
Brilliant that was a great watch😊 it would be good to see a track version of that, I think I will push you harder seeing everyone behind you if your trying hard enough or In front of you if not so 😉
I've just come across this video and I felt like I was running right along with everyone. So much fun to watch and inspiring for my own running journey
be interested to see how you decided the gaps for the finish (or was it as simple as just taking the predicted times and then starting everyone such that they finish at the same anticipated time) Very fun video, though .... next time anna
Great competition, I think the hardest thing with this sort of challenge is coming up with fair target times. What were your finishing times in the end? I guess the three of you must have been faster than predicted if Anna was dead on her predicted 26:30 and came in last. I guess if you did have a round 2 - you have a good benchmark time for everyone.
Got into runing again because of this channel near a year ago and always think of sending a vid of my daily 5k to share some of what SA can show! Keep up the great work!
Fantastic challenge. It reminded me of our clubs 20 minute out and back challenge. Run in one direction for 20 minutes at whatever pace you like then turn a run back to the start, the idea is to get back in exactly 20 minutes, or just under...but no slower!
Idea for a race. 5k with set out segments and the first person to each segment has put on an extra clothing item or something that would impact their running. One person could end up with everything or it might get spread out!! Think it would be entertaining.
Really fun video. Handicapped races are always a good laugh because it's all about how close to the predicted time everyone runs and if everyone is close to target they end up really close.
well done guys we regularly do this at our club and it helps improve peoples pace all the time we do a league over 10 runs and adjust peoples times each time
I did this with my cross country team. It was a blast. My number two runner was the one to win in the end, but not by much. He barely got my number 6 runner. I really enjoyed watching them push hard to run down, or stay off the other runners.
Loved this video. And the handicapped race too. Definitely going to give this a shot! Rematch definitely needs to happen. All roads this time!!! Keep up the amazing videos!
That's exactly what running is about , fun, smiles and enjoyment , it made me smile just watching. Oh and just to point out , its not real mud until it's up to your knees 😂
I am just starting out so I am pretty sure they would win hands down! You all did amazing but you definitely should do a rematch...thanks so much for doing this video! I was very sick and bedridden for over 10 years. But over a year and a half ago I started a keto diet and lost 40 lbs and gained so much of my life back! I started training 3 weeks ago for a 5k race in July. I haven't run a 5k in 39 years (I'm 51)! Still have health obstacles which makes training slower but I am so excited! I am at 2 miles in 38 mins right now. If I could make a 5k in 28 mins that would be awesome!
Great video, I’m in a running club on the Wirral ( village road runners ) and we do two handicap races a year 10k, and I hate the sound of stomping feet as they catch me up one by one, but it never stops me trying, we run the wirral way from Willaston to Parkgate to willaston, Andy might know that route 😂😂
Hahahahaha this was a great watch. Loved it and is a great idea. You guys are great entertainment. I think a rematch is needed. Anna ran to her time and you other lot were faster then yours.....love to have a go at this. Xx
Running muddy trails in road shoes (especially with the treads worn slick) is hilarious beyond belief. You should find the muddiest course possible and then do this as a challenge.
Fun! Gotta try that. Although, almost anyone I know will have to wait a long time to go after me at my pace. I guess they can go for a coffee or something.
It was a great fun to watch and congrats to You all but a special salut to Jess, being chased by the whole bunch of others must had been scary but very motivating!
