Bravo Salem! Nice to see Reefing's next generation starting out strong in STEM. And your degree field looks wide open for future applications or applied research if you want to stick with it. The Reefing hobby could certainly benefit from it. Regardless, I hope you publish your findings once your research project concludes. I also loved learning about the Sea School on Sanibel. I had no idea it existed. Something I'll happily send my son to once he gets a few years older.

I’ll admit that (post Jake) this channel hasn’t been personally engaging, since I prefer to learn especially in advance reefing topics. I hope you can do more episodes like this or maybe another ReefBuilder sister channel where advance topics are discussed (I’ve seen other reefers feel the same way).

It is a bit ironic that a couple episodes ago was the “How to Not Overthink you reef tank Episode” Ha ha We are officially in the overthinking age of almost every subject and overlooking fundamentals. The more research we do the closer we get to fundamental truths, but we also can get swept up into thinking we understand causation, data, and relationships when we are really only scratching the surface. Then Technology increases, academia finds a new paradigm or theory to explore and deeper we go, only to realize the deeper we have to go . . . What we forget is when we try to control or understand everything, we get this massive web of interconnected esoteric variables that learning about gets us really nowhere closer to where we want to be than before. Again . . . this is where we have to step back from specifics, analytics and being data driven to get to more qualitative fundamentals and best practices. Like Salem says the 90s; Metal Halides, Live Rock, Live Sand. Our aquariums are not the ocean. Each reef tank is its own meta ecosystem. We can take high level academic research and help it guide our best practices, but I am sure we are better off keeping things simple for success. Simple husbandry, filtration, feeding and maintenance. This is very inline with what hobby experts agree on; Jake Adams, BRS, Than and others I mean it’s not rocket appliances!
@dusk1947
@dusk1947 9 месяцев назад
I agree with the sentiment, but disagree with the statement. Coming at this from a scientific background, knowing more does not mean you should change your fundamentals. Science is simply the process by which we model nature, and are able to predict outcomes. It doesn't matter which field we choose, from mathematics, to engineering, to biology: they work the same way. The more we learn, the more we lean "we don't know", and the more individuals specialize. That has driven every advance humanity has made since the enlightenment. Our understanding of the Oceans, and our captive aquariums are no different. Reefing was next to impossible 50 years ago, until people studied it and experimented. They learned and enabled this hobby to exists. Continuing that spirit, that process of learning, is fundamental to this hobby. But, you don't have participate. It's not mandatory. An average hobbyist, doesn't need to change a thing based on this conversation. However, leaps and bounds could be made in coral farming, service accounts, public aquariums, and coral spawning/conservation programs. We know very little about the corals we keep. And their native habitat is degrading and threatened. The more we can learn, the better.
@Kloppy1992
@Kloppy1992 9 месяцев назад
@@dusk1947 totally agree with the March of progress aspect with STEM fields but when it comes to the hobby there it is so much more productive to pay attention to fundamentals not the latest scientific research. It’s almost the same with all hobby activities like excersize , nutrition , gardening , bonsai . People get caught up in nuance not basics. It just ends up confusing the average reefer but it does push the hobby forward .
@ReefTherapy
@ReefTherapy 9 месяцев назад
@kloppy1992 - thumbing through the amazing amount of anecdotal data about the basics is also very nuanced. There's always gonna be a little bit of finesse that goes into any hobby. New reefers will make it through if they really want to...and then they end up here, with us! -Remy
@Kloppy1992
@Kloppy1992 9 месяцев назад
@@ReefTherapy I agree with that! To be honest I love nuance I just worry that people avoid reefing due to the perceived difficulty. I love these discussions and the information, keep it all coming!
@RB-Raj
@RB-Raj 7 месяцев назад
Something that most reefers forget is that 99.99% of our home reefs are completely unnatural, meaning that they’re a mix of different locales: animals from different regions of the world that live in completely different environments. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise when our anecdotal experiences vary so much.

I'd love to know if there is benefit to using NSW in terms of microbiology, I use natural sea water for water changes, and have found my corals always look far more healthy (looks wise) compared to synthetic water.
@RB-Raj

Are you using unfiltered NSW? If so, there can be a lot of life in there that the corals are responding to
@DINOSAURIA92

@RB-Raj
@RB-Raj 9 месяцев назад
@@DINOSAURIA92 UK water? Wow, you're brave! Every large scale open water system I've seen has some sort of filtering for the incoming water. It's all about moderating caution, I guess. If something is working well, then it's working well..hard to argue against it..until it doesn't work well! That's usually the downside to NSW: the pollution or biological anomalies that can get introduced into a closed system. But it wouldn't be fun without the risks, right?
