Another approach for the crochet squares would be to crochet them in the round to get the same border all around. That however changes the look quite some.

Well Happy Birthday. I think the Danish sweater would be fun. The only thing I could possibly say about the crochet BLO around the edge would be to first sl st around the three sides very loosely which wouldn’t add any size? Then you’d be able to blo? Idk I’ve been crocheting for 24 years and never heard or done that myself. On an edge I just try to stick my hook wherever I can to “clean up” the edges... I’m super new to knitting and I find your channel very informative! Thanks!

I am 74 and my mother taught me to knit when I was 4. She was knitting for my brother and me and I wanted to copy her dressing my dolls. I have always casted on using 2 needles which means I then have to go back and knit my first row into the back loop to get the twisted stitch. I find this discussion about casting on techniques fascinating. I am Canadian. When I first learn to knit using patterns, many were UK. My mother would order yarn from the UK to go with the patterns. This would have been in the 1950s. I think I first bought yarn in a store in the 1960s. I began knitting my sweaters when I was 14 because my mother insisted that I do so. I continue to do. I have 3 in various stages begun since my building was locked down March 18 !!! Fortunately I had a stash of yarn and lots of books of patterns.

Lovely beanie. The Shetland Sheep show hat has become a tradition with me (My beginning in stranded) since the Baaable hat for the 2015 shaw. I made the ram/fishing boat one you have for my husband and he wears it every day while out on a walk with our dog. I love the shetland wool. The new pattern for the beanie (kep) has just come out.

Roxanne-such a great discussion here! I constantly learn so much from you and want to thank you, again, for suggesting and demonstrating the Finchley Graft. I recommend it constantly when someone expresses issues using the Kitchener Stitch for sock toes! I want to share with you another use for this wonderful technique...I hand knit Christmas Stockings from my late Mom’s Vintage Pattern. After completion of two stockings, I decided to remove the band with the name knitted in it. I wasn’t happy with the tension or the way the red was visible behind the back. I decided to secure before and after the 10 rounds where the name was, frog 🐸, re-knit the band solid with the white, Duplicate Stitch the name in red, then re-attach the section to the rest of the Stocking... Yep, I re-attached those 60 stitches with the Finchley Graft and it looks amazing!!! You can see my process pictures on my Instagram feed @misspamscreations or my Facebook page Miss Pam’s Creations. I so appreciate you sharing your vast yarn 🧶 knowledge!! Thank you and stay safe in these COVID19 times 👍🏼🧶😍

Finding a new project while coping with loss of enthusiasm for an ongoing one. Thought I'd share my approach to having enough to work on when a current project wanes. There are four baskets on a shelf in the living room. Each has an ongoing project. Yesterday I hit boredom in a shawl so I dipped into Basket Number 2, a hat I'd left a couple of weeks ago. Today I bounced out of bed (ok, at my age bounce is a bit of a misnomer), all excited about the hat. Baskets 'O Projects a waiting.

I had a little brain wave about your crocheting situation. If u wanted to do the first brder of the square thru the back loop, for the top and bottom, then for the sides you could do a single crochet in the back loop of the turning chain and for the next row do a chain 1 and repeat
@gracefrank500

Danish night sweater! I would be interested to find out what you might learn about historical Nordic knitting with this project. And, its short-sleeve design is something I can't remember you featuring before.
@CRouillier
@CRouillier 4 года назад
Hi Rox, it occurred to me that she may be referring to working through the back of the chain in the beginning of your work, not at the end. I believe this would make sense given her instructions. When you chain, you normally see the v's of the stitches in front of you, however, if you turn the chain around there is a little loop on the back. By working into these stitches, the starting edge looks much more complete. Theoretically, this should be doable later on as well (i.e. at the end), but I normally work the chain through the back loop (on the reverse side of the chain) and then that leaves an edge that has easily workable stitches. Sorry if that doesn't make sense, but just wanted to give my two cents!
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 4 года назад
Yeah I get what to do on the bottom edge, it’s the sides that I can’t figure out!
@ericamueller9086
@ericamueller9086 4 года назад
erica mueller I think that of the four projects you described, you sounded the most enthused by the Danish sweater. So do that one first; these days, it's more important than ever to do things that you look forward to. I crochet a lot. I think that when the designer told you to work into the bump in the back, she meant the bump at the rear of the starting chain.( I find this very difficult and tedious, but I am a tight crocheter.) The reason is that it leaves a clean row of V's at the front of the fabric. When you come to that row while edging the square, you get a clean edge if you crochet into the back leg of the V's. Another method would be to edge the yellow square with yellow yarn, using HDC. Then do the black, ALSO using HDC, into the back loop only. Because HDC gives you three loops at the top of the stitch, this creates a very neat, slightly raised black chain that hides the rear loop where the black stitch enters the yellow loop. It then doesn't matter if when you edge the black in beige, you use SC or HDC. Just be sure tu work into the back loop of the black. HDC is thicker than SC, but only a smidgen higher. May next year's birthday arrive in a healthier, saner world!

Hello. That's the method I learned to Cast On the stitches from my mother went I was 8 years old. I am from Argentina and I suppose she learned from her mother who was from Italy. I used this method for years until I found the LTCO that Americans ladies use, 5 years ago. That's is so funny, isn't it?? Love from Argentina.
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 4 года назад
Did you learn the LTCO so that the tail wraps around your thumb, index finger and middle finger of your left hand, or just around the thumb? I had learned the "thumb method" version where the yarn is just around the thumb, as it is for the continental version of the LTCO (where both strands are held in the left hand. I think that's what threw me: that the tail was wrapped around three fingers, instead of just the thumb.

The cast on you finish explaining at around 20 minutes looks like the way the youtuber "Very Pink Knits" does her long tail cast on. I've never seen anyone else do it that way before. It's always interesting to learn something new :)
@marilynpannell20
@marilynpannell20 4 года назад
CrazyWoolLady You're speaking of the way Staci (Very Pink Knits) 'throws' her yarn with the right hand, rather than the way she sets up for the cast on with her left. Staci uses the standard long tail cast on with her the yarn tail wrapped over thumb and index finger of the left hand held in a sort of V while the rest of the left hand fingers clutch both yarns together. That's where I learned 'throwing' rather than letting go of the ring hand needle like most "English" knitters do. But what my mother taught me, when I was five (1951), was the thumb method of casting on. However, I remember that she used to 'throw" the yarn, with her right hand, but I swear it was counter-clock-wise around the needle, while I throw clockwise. I never had the opportunity to observe her knitting after I got back into it myself, to figure it out.
@crazywoollady9325
@crazywoollady9325 4 года назад
@@marilynpannell20 No, I'm talking about the way she said she learned to cast on as a kid. I haven't watched her in years so I don't know how often she uses it these days, but if you go back 6 or 7 years ago you should find some videos where she uses this cast on. I can't remember if she ever had a name for it, but I do remember her saying she hadn't met many other people who used it. You're not wrong though, she does also throw :)

At the risk of repeating. :( What I do in this situation is as you were advised , using the same color as the main square . BUT ... SLIP STITCH Rox , instead of SC up the sides , go right up the uneven border edge , one slip for each row , this will be covered when you SC around with next color. Crochet in the Back Loop: I absolutely agree that it is very hard to crochet into the sides of your work, and there are no front and back loops along there. You're starting with the yellow so you'll HAVE front and back loops for the black. Just make a nice yellow border on those side edges. Maybe, because she's an expert, she wasn't thinking about those side of edges not having front and back loops. That would be just like the English pattern assuming you were knitting on the old way.
